Movie Reviews: Cirque Du Freak: The Vampire's Assistant

Cirque du Freak: The Vampire's Assistant is receiving a lot of biting criticism from reviewers.

Roger Ebert in the Chicago Sun-Times calls it "a mess."

Kyle Smith in the New York Post dismisses it as an "inept fantasy." (The headline of his review reads: “Fangs for Nothing: ‘Freak’ Show Sucks.”)

Most note that it's aimed at teen boys, and Desson Thomas in the Washington Post advises: "If serious, hard-core vampire movies for adults are the equivalent of spicy bloody marys, think of Cirque du Freak: The Vampire's Assistant as a watered-down Shirley Temple. Glug it down and, after the sugar rush, little sense of fulfillment filters through your system."

And Roger Moore in the Orlando Sentinel can’t really get worked up one way or another over the film. Unlike Twilight, which, he says, “vamps down Romance Novel Road,” Cirque du Freak amounts to “a lark and in this case, the laughs are intentional. The movie's big drawback is that it isn't silly enough.”
