In her new ABC sitcom, The Middle, Patricia Heaton’s Frankie Heck (not Keck) plays a struggling car dealer in Orson, Indiana trying to unload clunkers. When Patty first moved from New York to L.A. when she was 30, she was flat broke. “So I ended up buying a rusty ’74 Toyota Carolla from Rent-A-Wreck for $1500,” recalls the Everybody Loves Raymond vet. “It had a faulty starter, and the plastic dash board was split with sponge coming out of it.” She’d often be kept waiting at valet stands because the drivers couldn’t start her car.

The cars her new character sells are much nicer -- it’s her boss (Brian Doyle-Murray) who is the lemon. “Every week he’s planning on firing me,” she says. “He only hired me because he was afraid he was going to get some discrimination lawsuit for not having any women on his team.”
