Actress Kirsten Dunst put on a show for stunned partygoers in New York - after crashing a bash for Oscar-winning director Jane Campion to perform an impromptu audition.

The Spider-Man star showed up uninvited to a luncheon at the posh Plaza Hotel's Oak Room on Tuesday, held in Campion's honor.

Reports suggest Dunst is vying for a role in the filmmaker's latest project, Runaway - based on a book of short stories by Canadian writer Alice Munro. According to the New York Daily News, the star amused guests with a shameless show to get the director's attention.

A source tells the newspaper, "Kirsten is tap-dancing like crazy to get a job!"

A spokesperson for the actress was yet to respond to requests for a comment as WENN went to press.

Its a shame because I think Kirsten is a very talented actress. I rank her along with Natalie Portman and Juliette Lewis as the best actress under the age of 40.

She is a talent, but like most child actors, money and fame come too soon and too quick.

I also like Kirsten. I agree with Brain Damage many child actors lose fame quickly.

It is kind of sad that she feels the need to do something like that to get a role. That's what agents are for.

I hope she doesn't get the part-or any part for that matter. That probably tells you what I think of her.
