View Full Version : Social Security Disability. I got it!
Janice

As my good friends here know, I have a very bad neck as well as Fibromyalgia. I applied about 18 months ago for Social Security Disability. Last month, I had to testify before a Judge. Today, I got the word that my claim was approved. This is great news for me, as I am unable to work. I'll get a monthly check for the remainder of my life. I'll also be eligible for many other benefits.
I've got sort of mixed emotions about this. I'm naturally happy that I was approved. Still, I'm officially disabled according to the Government, and that's a strange feeling. I don't look disabled, but I can use the handicapped stall in the ladies room. I can get a placard to park in handicapped parking spots. Is anyone here disabled or do you know someone who is, that you want to talk about?

I'm so happy that you finally got it Janice! I know it was a long process to get through, but now that you've gotten it things will be so much easier for you. I hope everything works out well :)

That is great news Janice!
My mom is disabled and it took her so long to fight the system to get her disability. She has had 2 strokes and has severe arthrititis. Her doctor said there was no way she could work. When she went to court the first time they turned her down saying she could get a job as long as she didn't have to sit or stand for more than 30 minutes at a time. What the heck kind of job could that be??? She was living with no income for 3 years before being approved and it has been a miracle for her. Plus she did get a pretty big settlement when they finally approved her because they had to pay her from the time she first filed.
I am so glad this worked out for you. :)

Oh my gosh Janice, this is the best possible news I could ever hear, you have no idea how much I've been thinking about this, and praying about this, and it has happened!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thank You Jesus!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :D As soon as I read this, I ran upstairs and said to my mom guess what, I've got great news, she said what, and I said Janice got disabilty, to which she replied YAHOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! She has been praying so hard for you as well, heck, even Carl has if you can believe that. I feel like crying right now, because I was so scared that you would get denied, and so I feel the greatest sense of relief in the world right now. My heart is literally beating like 100 miles an hour right now. You're my big sis, and we have talked so much about this over the last several months, and so I can't even begin to describe how I'm feeling at the moment. I know this has been a huge burden for you as well, and I know how much you needed this, so I can't even begin to imagine how great you must be feeling right now. I am going to thank God long and good tonight, I just knew it was in His will for you to get this. As I've told you before, with what you've been through, and continue to go through, I don't know anyone who deserves this more than you!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Oh my gosh, I am just so happy, I am literally over joyed. As you know, I am also on disability, and the perks you receive as a result of being on it is just great. This is going to both help, and change your life in such a positive way Janice, and I am so excited for you. I cannot wait to chat with you on the phone soon, so we can talk all about this. This news has totally made my month, and I seriously could not be any happier for you than I am right now. Congratulations my friend, I love you sooooooooooo much!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have a disability and you can't really see it.
I didn't have to go to court but did have some testing to see if I am disabled and also a physical done too.
It's kinda different for me though because I can't go over a monetary limit, like I can't have more than $2,000 in my bank account and a bunch of other stuff.
But paying the rent does help and buying stuff too.

Congrats Janice! :woohoo:   I'm happy for you. You deserve it. I know what you mean about being labeled as disabled. I know sometimes people don't know I'm disabled by looking at me. I may not necessarily look blind. My sister Becky has both Epilepsy and Mental Retardation. I have two friends that are disabled. One visually impaired and one with Cerebral Palsy.
Again congratulations. :)

Congratulations! I'm happy to hear this! I wouldn't feel bad about being called "disabled". There's certainly nothing wrong with it. I've been working with disabled people via the phone for 10 years now and since I can't see them, I have no idea what their actual disabilities are. Most of them are pretty open about their disabilities when they are talking to me, and some of their stories just break my heart!:(
I have to confess, I've used the handicapped stall in the ladies room many times, but I make sure that I'm not keeping someone else from using it first of course! I hope that doesn't make me sound like a bad person. I have a cousin who has Fibromyalgia, and I really didn't know much about it until she told me that she has it. Apparently it's pretty painful, so I hope yours is a mild case.
From what I've been told, it can be hard to get disability, so I'm glad you were approved.

You guys are just wonderful. First for all of the kind words of congratulations, and secondly, for taking on MoonMan. If he/she only knew how sick a person has to be to be approved for disability, and the hoops Social Security makes you jump through. I'd gladly forgo the monthly check and return to work, if I could; but I'm a very sick person. With all that said, I am happy that I have a little income of my own now; and I offer no apologies to creeps like MoonMan.

I'm kinda fond of MoonF*g, myself... ;) I mean, uh, what?
It's just as much of a bitch to go OFF social security as it is to get ON it. These guys don't make it easy for anyone, I can say that for sure.
Mine screwed me over so much that they weren't giving me jack (I mean as in zero dollars) when I was only making like $400-$500/month at work. Gee, thanks, guys.
Sorry - that's the voice of stress you're seeing here. I've been on it all my life, due to my two disabilities. But my mom was the one receiving my benefits while I was under 18, then when I turned 18, it got handed over to me. Not a lot of problems with them until 1 1/2 years ago.
Anyway - I am so glad for you to finally be getting benefits now! What sweet relief. :)

I'm glad you were approved too :) It's a shame that honest people have to go through so much trouble to get approval for things like disability and food stamps while those who know how to play the system get things they don't deserve.
I have vision and hearing impairments, which I was born with. I also have a mild speech impediment. I can't drive, which frustrates me, but I do have a job and right now I don't need any assistance, which I am thankful for.

My brother in law's sister is on SSI disability. She gets more than I do and I mean she gets more..
I think it might have something to do with that I live with my mom and she lives with her roomate...
Get this.. she's a drug addict and gets like $600 and food stamps too. Also she calls her brother everyday for money even though she gets SSI and found out also she got arrested for shoplifting. I wonder if that's going to make her lose it now.
I don't get food stamps!! But I do have a job and however a I make, SSI deducts how much they give me.

Yeah. I don't know remember what it's called but I think he takes care of her money kind of thing and that's why he gets called.
I don't know if the SSI knows about her being a drug addict but I think they do know she has a son and I'm sure they will find out about her getting arrested.

I have an uncle who's 65 and has been on disability for his entire adult life. He got it because he was an alcoholic. Back in the old days, a person could get it for substance abuse, but not anymore. It's harder to get SS Disability now. I had to see their doctors, so much paperwork; my lawyer worked hard too. The law firm gets 25% of the lump sum I get. I get it retroactive. I'm happy to pay the lawyer as i never would have won my case without him.

Today, I received the official Judge's decision. It was 15 pages long. He probably speaks into a recorder, and his assistant prepares it. It was actually very interesting, reading how and why he reached his decision; and the factors that influenced him. There were quotes from doctors that I saw a couple of years ago, things I said and that were said to me. I had forgotten half of it. I thought it would be very offical sounding, and a lot of it was; yet some of it was almost warm sounding. He wrote that, "The claimant feels a sense of deep sorrow over the loss of her family members. This, combined with her physical impairments.....on and on". I still haven't finished it. It's like a novel, lol. The story of my life.

So glad that your claim finally went through, I've heard way too many horror stories about what people have to go through to secure an SSI claim. It's incredible what good, honest people have to go through these days for something like this.
My wife's sister also has Fibromyalgia, and from what I can see, "painful" doesn't even begin to describe it. It's "painful" on GOOD days.
But I'm very glad for you that your claim was finally approved. We trust that maybe you'll sleep a little better tonight! That's gotta be a tremendous relief!

Janice, so glad you got the Soc Sec. Sorry for not posting here sooner but I'm like the wondering nomad w/o a computer - renting time (cheaply) til I get a computer. From your pm's, I know what you've been going thru & that to get Soc Sec for a disability it has to be VERY COMPELLING which yours surely is.
As for Moon-A**hole-Space Cadet, glad the troll got the boot fast. That's what I like abt S.O., it really is a nice gp of people and that kind of crap doesn't get tolerated. And spewing that venom at you of all people. Easier said than done but I try to avoid responding to trolls. Dollars to doughnuts most in person are pathetic excuses and have no life off the bds so they have to come onto a new website to attempt to stir up trouble. I think many must be into S&M, I think they get their cookies off by saying mean & sadistic things and then getting off on others being upset. I AM SO GLAD THE TROLL GOT THAT BOOT MUY PRONTO. And btw, Janice, I'll never forget how wonderful you were to me when I dealt with my own troll 2 yrs ago. Hope you're doing well physically, anyways, as well as can be expected. That is great news, Janice!
Be glad you didn't have to deal with the VA (Veterans Affairs). I did that on behalf of my mom (surviving spouse of a WWII veteran) and it took over 1 and 1/2 years for her to finally receive a monthly pension. It took numerous phone calls to the VA and writing to the local Congressman (Brad Sherman) three times before everything was approved. I'm glad I don't have to go through that anymore!
It is a good feeling to be approved and, best of all, not having to do anymore paperwork or make more phone calls.

Oh Janice that is wonderful news! I know what you mean - it's hard to be happy that you're considered disabled, but when it comes to helping you out financially and any other way, then heck, it IS good news. I know how much this means to you. Funny, today has been a very happy day for me . Almost like "normal" and I haven't been able to figure out why - maybe I had some sort of telepathic hunch that there was good news for my sister!!!
I used to use a handicapped placard for parking the car - and like you, didn't look "disabled". I swear, dummies expect you to be in a wheelchair or something. That's the only drawback - is that you will get the odd moron who plays "cop" with you and challenges your right to park there. I'll email you with some choice comebacks for them. LOL I've got some good ones. ;)
As you know, my mother was put on disability for the last 10 years of her life. It actually was a huge help to us. Don't feel badly - you've worked hard in your lifetime and paid your dues in income taxes and can still contribute to society when disabled.
Great, great news!
