Halloween 3D in Theaters by Summer of 2010
Sunday, August 30, 2009
By: MrDisgusting

Thanks to our boy BC and his incredible hawk eyes for catching an article over at the LA Times that will make Michael Myers fans very happy.

Apparently, Rob Zombie hasn't put an end to franchise as the Weinstein brothers are already planning a return to Haddonfield in 2010 with Halloween 3D.

While Halloween II only opened at the #3 spot this weekend, had it not started a fist fight with The Final Destination, it would have easily taken the top spot and make over $30m. The Weinsteins know this and are quickly making plans for a third film.

Read on for the skinny and then talk about who you'd like to see take the reigns. Who could make Myers even better?

From the LA Times:

""Halloween II" may not have won the box office this weekend, but Weinstein Co. is taking a lesson from the movie that did as it prepares a sequel for next summer.

The independent studio's co-Chairman Bob Weinstein said today that the 3-D sequel, titled, appropriately enough, "Halloween 3D," is in development.

The investment it takes to shoot movies in digital 3-D has proved particularly lucrative for horror films. For "The Final Destination," this weekend's No. 1 movie, theaters with at least one 3-D screen earned 3.25 times as much as those that showed the movie in 2-D only, according to distributor Warner Bros. That's substantially higher than for other recent releases.

The equivalent 3-D multiple for last month's "G-Force," for instance, was only 1.7 on its first weekend. For July's "Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs" it was 1.4 andm for June's "Up" it was 2.2. January horror flick "My Bloody Valentine" earned 6.4 times as much from 3-D theaters as it did from 2-D on its opening weekend.

Weinstein said Rob Zombie, who directed "Halloween II" and 2007's reboot of the 31-year-old horror series, won't return for "Halloween 3-D." He said the studio is in negotiations with a new director, whom he declined to name, who has experience in horror and has a "different take" on the franchise."

RUMOR: Halloween 3D Director Name Being Thrown Around
Tuesday, September 1, 2009
By: MrDisgusting

I don't like to post rumors that we haven't checked out yet, but other websites are already reporting the rumor, so we might as well too.

A reader by the name of "The Egg Man" e-mailed all of us claiming that they know who is directing Halloween 3D, which was just announced yesterday after a less than stellar opening weekend for Michael Myers.

Read on to see what our reader has heard and remember to keep this filed under rumor until we confirm.

From THE EGG MAN:

"I figured I would let you in on a little info that came my way via my agent. I don't know if this is 100% accurate, but if it is, it wouldn't surprise me.

Word is, that the person who will be directing this next film, not only has horror experience, but also has experience with Michael Myers, and 3-D films as well.

I heard that Dimension is in negotiations with STEVE MINER to come back to the franchise. Steve directed "Halloween:H20", as well as "Friday the 13th parts II and III". Do whatever you want with this info. If you choose to use it, feel free to call me THE EGG MAN."

Well, we've got an e-mail out to Mr. Miner and will let you know what he says as soon as he returns. Miner also directed the Day of the Dead direct-to-DVD release from First Look.

The reason I DON'T believe this rumor is that I've been doing some heavy digging since it was announced and have learned that Dimension Films might have actually jumped the gun on the announcement, and still have yet to decide if they're doing it or not.

As always, we'll keep you posted, and remember RUMOR, RUMOR, RUMOR.

Patrick Lussier in Talks for Halloween 3D
Monday, September 7, 2009
By: MrDisgusting

Since when does Variety jump on stories that aren't confirmed? I guess we're entering a new era.

We caught up with My Bloody Valentine 3D director Patrick Lussier last week to confirm a rumor we were told that he was in talks for Dimension Films' Halloween 3D. He confirmed he WAS in talks, but it sounded like no definite plans were coming anytime soon.

We had also heard Alex Aja was in talks, but debunked that as quickly as we heard it.

Fact is, we're also hearing the movie is far from greenlit, even though the Weinstein Company jumped on a 2010 date for Michael Myers' return to theaters. Hey, if they can get it going, all the power to 'em.

Akkad Offers Some Clarification on Halloween 3D
Source: Ryan Rotten, Managing Editor
September 10, 2009

Last night, producers Malek Akkad and Andy Gould were joined by the lovely ladies of Halloween II and Tyler Mane for a special screening of the Rob Zombie film in Thousand Oaks. During a Q&A, Gould and Akkad was pressed for details on the recently announced Halloween 3D.

The former repeated what was said already: Zombie would not be back for a third round. Akkad, however, jokingly reminded him that the director said he wouldn't return for a sequel after the first film. "There will most likely be a '3,'" Akkad told the audience. "We're trying to figure something out."

I caught up to Akkad outside the theater moments later to ask about the weekend news break that positioned Patrick Lussier (My Bloody Valentine 3D) as the prime contender for the director's chair. The producer stressed that they're looking at a number of directors. Lussier is definitely one and because he's toyed with 3-D once already, that is an appealing factor. Akkad said they're currently waiting to see what Lussier's take is going to be.

So, for now, it appears Halloween 3D does not have a "locked" director.

Writer and Director Confirmed for Halloween 3D
Saturday, September 19, 2009
By: MrDisgusting

Bloody Disgusting & Dread Central received confirmed word this evening that Patrick Lussier has officially signed the dotted line to direct HALLOWEEN 3D for Dimension Films.

He'll be heading to Haddonfield with Todd Farmer, who will be penning the screenplay.

The duo previously worked together on MY BLOODY VALENTINE 3D for Lionsgate, making them perfect candidates to bring Michael Myers to theaters in 3D.

Shooting is scheduled for this fall.
What do you guys think of the news?

Weinstein Co's Dimension Films Shuts Down Pre-Production On Halloween 3D
By Nikki Finke | Tuesday September 29, 2009

So here's what happened:

The script only came in Friday, the first draft that Dimension Films had seen. And The Weinstein Co was rushing to get the film into production for a November start date because it has to be done by January when director Patrick Lussier starts a film for Avi Lerner.

A release for Summer 2010 was planned. Sure, the rumor mill claims TWC is out of money amid all those layoffs, and couldn't agree on a $2.5M budget battle with Lussier, and had key crew ready to fly to Shreveport.

But I understand that Bob Weinstein shut down H3D pre-production "because Bob just felt it was rushing too fast."

Now Dimension plans to start the film after Wes Craven protogee and My Bloody Valentine 3D helmer Lussier is free. (After all, the film editor got his directing start making Dracula 2000 for the Weinsteins.)

But I know what you're thinking: Rob Zombie's reboot sequel Halloween II did lousy at the box office so perhaps TWC wants to cut its losses.

"We make those pics for very little money and tight marketing dollars so anything north of $25M is a huge success for us," an insider tells me.

Meanwhile, HII, whose domestic total is now $32M, will get a re-release on Halloween in selected theaters for midnight showings.

EXCL: Who's on Halloween 3D Myers FX Duty?
Source: Ryan Rotten, Managing Editor
October 7, 2009

Shortly before the plug was temporarily pulled on Halloween 3D, director Patrick Lussier called on an old friend for FX and Myers mask-making duties.

Gary Tunnicliffe began work, briefly, on the production.

Then Dimension halted development until Lussier could finish Drive Angry. The FX artist executed the kills in Lussier's My Bloody Valentine 3D. His credits in the Halloween franchise include Halloween: Resurrection and Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers.

This summer, audiences saw his grisly gore gags in Marcus Dunstan's The Collector and he's presently working on the remake of Straw Dogs.

Halloween 3D is expected to resume production sometime next spring.

EXCL: Tunnicliffe Talks Halloween 3D Work
Source:Ryan Rotten, Managing Editor
October 7, 2009

This morning, we broke the news to you that Gary Tunnicliffe and his team were going to provide the FX for Dimension Films' Halloween 3D.

"I was very sad to see 'H3D' halted," laments Tunnicliffe.

"Patrick [Lussier] was really amped up to deliver something the fans would really like, the script was very cool, great fun and the 'vibe' was to take the movie back to the tone and feel of the original film but with 3D technology and some VERY cool kills."

He has his fingers crossed that "hopefully we will get our chance to go to Haddonfield, spill a little crimson and have a little fun - I just want to apologize to all my crew who were hired and ready to work like crazy 'under the gun' only to find themselves 'fired' the very first day of prep."

Tunnicliffe also wanted to clarify that while he did do work on Halloween: Resurrection, the Michael Myers mask in that film is not his creation. It was handled by another company, "I only wish I could have done it," he says.

On Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers, the makeup FX was provided by John Carl Buchler. "I just came in at the very end on a week of re-shoots for a couple of little pieces at the request of some of the execs at Dimension after they liked my work on 'Hellraiser: Bloodline'."

A HILARIOUS Video Where Scout Taylor Compton Talks Halloween 3
Friday, January 29, 2010
By: MrDisgusting

Joey M. sent us a link to a video on YouTube that's an instant classic in my book.

Scout Taylor-Compton, who played Laurie Strode in Rob Zombie's two Halloween films, posted a video chatting about thoughts on Halloween 3.

She can't seem to make up her mind and has obviously been tainted by all of the dialogue in Zombie's film. Everything "sucks."

"They called me up and they said, 'So we're gonna do "H3" in two months, we don't really know our director and we don't have a script'," she says. "I said 'No' because I felt like they were rushing it and feel like they were just gonna make it suck."

She continues, "I honestly think it needs to stop. But if its a great script I definitely wanna do it...but Im definitely not gonna do a movie that sucks."

Tom Atkins Drops Halloween 3 Plot Points
Source: Fangoria
March 15, 2010

Will Halloween 3 ever happen? Who knows.

But someone should bring Tom Atkins up to speed on what's happening at Dimension Films.

In an interview with Fangoria, he says that he's set to co-star with Scout Taylor-Compton in the threequel playing "a shrink in a mental hospital that Laurie [Taylor-Compton] is in with a bunch of other girls who have been up to no good. I'm trying to help them find a way to the light."

Clearly he's referring to the Todd Farmer-penned draft of the script that Patrick Lussier was in line to direct after he did Drive Angry.

But here's the thing: It's widely known around town that Dimension, since the Farmer/Lussier Halloween 3 was put on the backburner, has been hearing pitches from other writers for another take on the film.

I'm curious though, now, to know more about Farmer's direction. Atkins as a shrink and Strode in a mental hospital? Sounds like it was taking a turn into grounds we've seen before (Nightmare on Elm Street 3, Boogeyman 2, etc.).

Lussier Talks Old Halloween 3 Plans
Tuesday, April 6, 2010
By: MrDisgusting

We've got an interesting mix-mash of news both coming from the world of Patrick Lussier and Todd Farmer.

As most of you should already know, before moving forward on their 3-D action revenge flick Drive Angry, the My Bloody Valentine duo were originally working on Dimension Films' Halloween 3D.

With new rumors circulating on the web (thanks to a fake Twitter account), Lussier speaks with a bit of hesitation on Michael Myers' latest trip to Haddonfield...

With his focus on Summit Entertainment's Drive Angry 3D, director Patrick Lussier talked briefly with MTV about Halloween 3D, which was nixed late last year. Could it still go later this year?

"That'll all depend on Dimension Films and timing," Lussier told MTV adding a bit about the story they (both Todd Farmer and himself) had planned.

"The film that we wrote took place, like, the next frame after Rob's "Halloween II" ended and immediately went into stripping Michael Myers back to his John Carpenter roots...

That's what we did very quickly. And then you pick up the story a year later as Halloween rolls around again. Everybody's back in the fray. That was our goal."

Would he return?

"If things were to work out," he said, trailing off. "Right now, my focus is on "Drive Angry"."

Lussier & Farmer Talk Halloween 3
Monday, July 19, 2010
By: Chris Eggertsen

During his visit to the set of director Patrick Lussier and co-scripter Todd Farmer's Drive Angry 3-D in May, B-D reporter Chris Eggertsen tried to get something - anything - out of them regarding the status of Halloween 3.

Farmer indicated at the time that the duo would still be interested in tackling the project:

"I think there's not many who don't know that we did 'Halloween 3' and we would still, Patrick and I both, would still very much love to do 'Halloween 3'...

We have written a first draft of that and so now it's in the capable hands of the Weinstein Company."

The subject still seemed a little raw for Lussier, though.

When I asked him about it, his answer was very short and very curt:

"I know nothing about 'Halloween 3'," he snapped.

"My last involvement with the project was Christmas. My last conversation with the Weinsteins was at that time. Beyond that I know nothing. You know as much as I do."

Ouch. Sounds like it might be a long time before we see this one materialize.

Director Patrick Lussier on Halloween 3D
By Peter Hall
Posted Dec 15th 2010

Where is Halloween 3D at? Is it just back-burnered or are you guys off of it?

You'd really have to ask Dimension Films and Bob Weinstein. We were very excited about the script we wrote.

Malek Akkad was very excited about the script we wrote. We loved Malek and we'd love to make the movie with him, but that's up to the grown-ups who are above our pay grade, so who knows.

I am frequently surprised by whatever happens next.

Patrick Lussier on Halloween 3-D
Friday, February 25, 2011
By: Chris Eggertsen

During our recent exclusive chat with Patrick Lussier to discuss the release of his latest film, the Nicolas Cage vehicle Drive Angry 3D, we simply couldn't let the director go without first asking for an update - any update - on Halloween 3-D, which has seemingly gotten this close to production several times in the past before being put squarely on the Weinsteins' back-burner once again.

Interestingly, Lussier seems to think that the studio's laser-focus on the make-or-break release of Scream 4 may be part of the reason for that.

"Yeah, well, we've got the 'H3' script sitting there," said Lussier.

"We would make that in a hearbeat...The Weinsteins' focus has shifted onto 'Hellraiser', and they obviously want to focus on 'Scream 4'...their sort of "slasher mind" is probably very, very focused on that film and the release of that film.

So I can't really speak for them, you know?"

In other words, the Weinsteins are only able (willing?) to focus on reviving one slasher franchise at a time.

"I wish I had more to tell you," offered Lussier, obviously passionate about the project.

"I know Todd and I would love to shoot that, love to shoot the script that was so much fun to write and delve into that Carpenter world."

Interview: Director Patrick Lussier and Writer Todd Farmer Talk Halloween III
by Joseph McCabe
May 27, 2011

What can we expect from Michael Myers in Halloween III?

Lussier: Todd and I wrote it to be a continuation of Zombie's Halloween II and the set-up for the franchise that he did, a sort of reboot of that.

Then take it back to the roots of John Carpenter and create a scenario that echoes the first film, the late ‘70s film that John made. And going back to the tone of Carpenter and the fun that his movie had, and how much you really liked all the characters and how compelling they are.

That to us was the reason to do it. Both of us love the original Halloween and remember seeing it in the theater for the first time and being completely terrified and blown away by it.

It's been repeated so many times – there's pieces of the original Halloween in Halloween H2O. That was something we were very excited to do. The script's still out there. We're waiting for Dimension Films to decide that's what they want to make next.

We spoke recently about it and voiced our passion for the project.

Farmer: We took Zombie's story and we continued that story without breaking the rules, without cheating. We kept it in the world that he did. But our goal was to return to a John Carpenter tone.

And while Zombie created a Michael Myers that was sort of a T-Rex – and I appreciate that; it was something different – at the same time I always felt Halloween was one of the movies that made me what I am.

So I've always loved the fact that Michael was a pr*ck and devious in the way he operated. He was The Shape. Which we're continuing in a fun way – part Zombie and part Carpenter.

In returning to the Carpenter tone, is the film not likely to be in 3D?

Lussier: When they originally asked us to do it, they wanted it in 3D. Whether it's 3D or not now, I have no idea. That's for the grown-ups. We conceived it to work either way. Story comes first. So the story will work whether it's shot in 2D or 3D.

If it's shot in 3D, we'll put a little 3D rollercoaster in it so that everybody can get a blast out of it. That's always up to those who paid for it. [Laughs]

Farmer: It's a Halloween movie, and of course we're thrilled and can't wait to do it. We wrote it before going into production on Drive Angry, and the plan was to shoot it before Drive Angry. But it just turned out to be impossible.

At this point now, all the focus is on Hellraiser. And as soon as we're done with Hellraiser then hopefully we can roll right onto Halloween.

Dimension Wants Halloween 3D for 2012
Source: Box Office Mojo
June 17, 2011

Dimension Films has announced that fans of Michael Myers should put a big red circle around October 26, 2012 on their calendars.

That's when the company is expected to release Halloween 3D.

Of course, at this time, we have no clue who is directing or which script they are going with.

Patrick Lussier and Todd Farmer penned a draft which picks up after the events of Rob Zombie's Halloween II. The story concerns Laurie Strode in a mental hospital and there's a part for Tom Atkins to co-star.

Lussier and Farmer, however, are neck-deep in the Hellraiser redo script.

Todd Farmer Talks Halloween 3D
Wednesday, September 7, 2011
By: BC

Do they want a PG-13 rating for Halloween 3D?

I know PG-13’s always discussed. To me it seems impossible to do Hellraiser as a PG-13, and it seems DIFFICULT to do Halloween as PG-13. What we wrote was definitely not PG-13.

Probably the biggest change is that since so much time has gone by, is that I don’t think a sequel to Rob’s Halloween II would still play, so I’m not sure that our original script would work. We literally started ours five minutes before Rob’s movie ended.

So much time has gone by... there have been other things discussed, other ways to tell that story.

You guys actually DID complete a script for Halloween 3D, right?

Yeah, I think it was September of 2009, we had eight days to write the script if we were going to prep it, shoot it, and wrap it before we had to go prep for Drive Angry, it was all supposed to be done very fast.

At the end of the day there was just no time or money to pull it off.

Now that 3D is seemingly not a big draw anymore, you think it might be 2D if/when it happens?

Was the 3D element really important in the script?

We had some “Comin at ya!” stuff written into it, but it could be done 2D.

I think My Bloody Valentine and Drive Angry both play great in 2D perfectly well. I don’t know what THEY’RE thinking, but if I was the boss, I wouldn’t do it in 3D at this point.

I think Final Destination is a perfect movie to do in 3D, I don’t know if Halloween is. It’s still huge overseas though, but I think people are just tired of it here in the States.

James Cameron style epics will keep 3D alive, not this other stuff.

But they still want SOMETHING with the Halloween name, right?

Absolutely. The date has been set. October of 2012. And even that can be pushed forward if the movie’s ready, like the last couple.

They’re listening to ideas and pitches... I don’t know what the future holds, but I know there will be another one.

Give us a tease, what was your original Halloween 3D story?

Basically we opened at the end of Rob’s movie; the whole first act is the end of Rob’s movie, at the end of which Michael is killed. But instead of Scout stabbing Michael... Rob had these visions and things, so we had it so that she thinks she’s killing Michael, but it’s a vision and she’s actually been stabbing Loomis.

And then Michael puts the mask on her and she stumbles outside (as we see in the theatrical version of Halloween II), and then when she takes the mask off that’s when we’d switch to 3D. It would be flat until then.

Anyway, Laurie survives and is taken to a mental institution, and then Michael returns, but it’s not Rob’s Michael that returns, it’s the Shape – he stalks, he gets the original white mask back, and the coveralls.

So it’s still in Rob’s world, but with the Carpenter version of Michael. And of course we had a great role for Tom Atkins; he’d be playing the doctor of the hospital. And the whole time the TV in the rec room would be playing the Silver Shamrock theme, and at one point Atkins would walk by and yell (Farmer switches to a damn good Atkins impression) “Turn that sh*t off!” And I’d keep my pants on this time.

Also, there was never anyone cast. Our intention was to bring his cast back, but it never got that far. Scout may have seen an outline, but no one was ever in negotiations, I’m certain no one was officially attached.

But it was going from the theatrical ending of Halloween II, not the director’s cut version?

Yeah, when we were hired the theatrical was all that was available. We never saw Rob’s original ending.

Halloween 3D Pushed Back?
January 31, 2012
By: EvanDickson

There are some unconfirmed reports emerging that Halloween 3D may be getting pushed back from its October 26th release date.

As of right now, STYD is reporting that the film has been moved to next year. Right now their story is unconfirmed, but the film hasn't started shooting - or even firm casting yet. So I wouldn't necessarily expect it this year.

We'll see what comes of it in the next few days, but in this town, it's usually later rather than sooner. The lack of momentum thus far does indicate that it might be pushed.
