British Man Jailed on Child Pornography Charges After Offended Burglars Turn His Laptop Over to Police
Sunday, August 16, 2009

A British man has been sentenced to three-and-a-half-years in prison after burglars found images of child pornography on his stolen laptop and turned it over to the police.

Richard Coverdale was convicted of downloading pictures of child abuse as well as exposing himself to an unsuspecting teenage girl over the internet while posing as a 14-year-old boy, according to Gazettelive.com.

Police started investigating the 24-year-old convicted arsonist after burglars discovered the images on a laptop they stole from Coverdale's house in August 2008 and contacted police, the Web site reported.

According to prosecutors, the officers found 13 illegal photos and 65 illegal videos on the computer and uncovered online conversations between Coverdale and a 14-year-old girl, during which Coverdale pretended to be a fictitious 14-year-old boy named Danny, Gazettelive.com reported.

The last of those conversations, which took place days before the burglary, showed Coverdale invited the girl to watch "Danny" on a webcam, then filmed himself performing a sex act, the site reported.

Coverdale was sent to a juvenile detention for four years in 2003 for setting fired to five properties in one night — some with people inside, according to Gazettelive.com.

In addition to his new sentence, Coverdale has been banned for life from working with children and is schedule to receive a sexual offences prevention order this week, the site reported.

I'm glad that the burglars did the right thing by turning into that sicko. There are many criminals in this world who would never commit sex crimes. Usually rapists and child molestors are held in protective custody in the prisons.

Yes, very true... a number of murders have actually taken place within the prisons themselves, and the "victims" are usually guys who commit horrible acts against children. Even (other) criminals have standards, and there seems to be kind of an unwritten code of "ethics" that says "when you (that's any prisoner) get a chance to take one of these guys (child molesters/rapists/killers) out, do it...make sure they never get out on the street again"

It's great that these guys turned in the owner of the computer. It would be interesting to see how THEIR lives turn out after doing a very good deed.

I wonder if the burglars were charged themselves? They had burgled someone's house, but since they turned this stuff in, I would expect that at the very least they would be given a much lighter sentence and may even get off altogether.

I do commend these two for turning the laptop in. However, my general view of burglars remains the same: I strongly dislike them and think the best way to deal with them is to do what Kevin McCallister did in Home Alone.

^It didn't say what happened to the burglars or even identify them. They should be commended for what they did. There is one less pervert on the streets because of them. I do agree with you about the Home Alone thing

I also think rapists, pedophiles, and psychopaths should be put in protective custody. They deserve what happens to them in prison. They are the lowest of all the lowlifes out there.

Some of the main reasons sex offenders are put in protective custody/adminstrative segreagation in prison systems is to prevent lawsuits and injuries/death to corrections officers. Corrections officers have to break up fights they might not like having to protect a rapist or pedophile but they have to avoid being liable for anything that happens to the inmate. A few of my relatives who worked/work in prisons and they explained that in the past many inmates who were injured from fights filed suit aganist prisons claiming that they weren't protected and corrections officers have been injured and killed trying to break up fights. The protective custody method is mostly to prevent lawsuits and injuries/deaths of corrections officers. I do think sex offenders should get their asses beat in prison but I can see the reasing for keeping them out of general population.
