For the very most part, no. I'll have a cig a few times a year, if I'm in the environment for it (other people are smoking, I'm at a bar, whatever). Which is very rarely.

No, not anymore. I used to smoke when I was 15 until I was almost 20, but after seeing my grandfather die of lung cancer, I quit. No more cigs for me. I was never a chain smoker or anything, more of a social smoker I guess you could say.

Nope. I've never smoked. The smell really bothers me. I don't know if I'm allergic or what, but I always tear up and get horrible headaches after I'm around it for too long.

Kind of on the same note, anyone ever try hookah?
I tried it once, and I hated it. I must've done it wrong or something, but I couldn't stop coughing. Everyone always asks me if I smoke hookah because I'm Persian and they're always shocked when I say no. lol.

Yes, I tend to frequent hookah bar/club establishments. Some of the stuff used have odd flavors so if you're not used to it you'll get a bad reaction.
No way. I hate going out somewhere and smelling like smoke when you leave.

I understand. I hate it when my clothes start to smell like smoke when I leave at a bar or a casino that smells like smoke. I hate the smell of the smoke because it stinks.

OK so we are talking about cigarettes here LOL :D
To answer the question, no I dont smoke. I dont like the smell of smoke, but I have friends who smoke, and from time to time I will go to a bar, and see live bands so there are people there that smoke, so I have to deal with it from time to time.

Wow, harsh comments. Yes, cigarette smoke is smelly, it is a disgusting addiction. I smoked, off and on, since I was 15. And, if I could back in time, and never smoked that first cigarette, trust I would. People who are addicted to cigarettes are faced with such a stigma; we know this addiction is not pleasant, very unhealthy, but cigarettes is extremely difficult to break ties with. I wish, I thought cigarettes were gross, or the smell of them, so horrific, that I would never have the desire to try one. In a lot of ways, I envy you guys...:(
I tried it in college, didn't like it, won't touch it again.

I am sooo not a smoker. Tried it when I was young, didn't like the taste it left in my mouth. I am so glad I never got into it, especially these days. Not just for health reasons, but I do notice the prices. I could never afford to smoke. Even the cheap brands, a carton is over $20!!

Same here, most of my husband's relatives also smoke, so it's hard to get away from it.

I used to have both grandmothers that smoked years ago and they both don't smoke anymore. I had a great aunt that had lung cancer that went down to her backbone from smoking and she passed away in April 2008.

First of all, congrats to all of you who have quit smoking and a bigger congrats to those who have never smoked. I have never smoked and never will. It's disgusting and it seems that half of Seattle smokes, which is really sad.
I'm actually surprised that no one in this thread came foreword as a smoker, but that's great! I am not exaggerating when I say that probably 90% of my coworkers smoke. I just don't get the attraction. The other day I got to work about 7:30. On the way to work, I saw one of my coworkers smoking. No big deal, but then I noticed that before 8am, she smoked three cigarettes! Gross!
I've mentioned this before, but my stepdad and my aunt died in 2006/2007 within six days of each other. My stepdad had respitaory failure and my aunt had lung cancer. Both of them smoked. Then in February of 2007, the main supervisor for our office died of lung cancer, only 8 months after he was diagnosed. All three people I mentioned were under the age of 60. It floors me how many people in my office still smoke, knowing what happened to this supervisor.

^ I did try smoking cigarettes when I was a freshman in high school because my best friend at that time smoked, and so did several of the others in our crowd. No one pressured me to do it, but I just wanted to fit in. Now I'm sorry I ever did it (smoked AND hung out with that crowd). :(

i don't prefer cigars either. kelso on that 70s show said it was like smoking a dirty sock , but I actually heard cigars are WORST then cigarettes, and that one cigar is equivalent to smoking 10 cigarettes. don't know if that's true, but is very gross.
As a smoker of cigars (among other things) I will try to make you clear on a few things.
THERE ARE NO SAFE TOBACCO PRODUCTS. Be it smoking, sniffing, chewing... they all pose a risk in some way but each of their risks have different factors.
Regarding cigars in particular, for the most part, its smokers are not addicted and they do not inhale. Cigars are considered a luxury and are not meant to be rushed (or chain-smoked). So you do not intake as much as those who are addicted to cigarette smoking.
Some can become addicted to cigars, but they are not in the majority, and some choose to inhale but that is not what they are meant to be used for.
Also, cigars do not contain a lot of the extra additives that are found in cigarettes. They are "safer" in that sense but they are not risk-free.
One of the reasons cigarette smokers inhale is because the amount of tobacco inside is so small that you must inhale to get the flavor. For cigars that is not the case since most of them are made out of 5-17 grams of pure tobacco whereas a single cigarette contains less than a gram.
Since cigar smokers, for the most part, do not inhale they may not be at a lot of risk for lung cancer but the mouth, throat, lips, and tongue are at risk.
Also, there are the cheap machine made cigars like Philles, Dutch... which are of cheap quality and are horrible as opposed to the higher quality cigars like Cohiba and Monte Cristo that can go up to $7.50 for a single cigar.
In essence it depends on how much of it you smoke. In my view they are no better or worse than other types of smoking just that the risks affect different factors.

I am really interested in people here that have tried cigarettes at least once...what was your reason for doing it?
Maybe peer pressure? a friend, or a number of/group of friends asked you, annoyed you to, and finally convinced you to try a cig and smoke
because a significant other smokes
just to try it, even if you don't think of yourself as a smoker, whatsoever
Really because I figure everybody else was doing it. I didn't want to be a "square". Like I said, I'm glad it didn't appeal to me. I hear so many stories about how hard it is to quit. Then when some do quit, they start gaining weight.

I was watching a story about a guy who was a writer and he was hooked on "dip". He couldn't do his work on the computer if he didn't have that pinch between his cheek & gums. Then he started developing lesions inside his mouth.

I grew up around people who smoke. I am the only person in my immediate family who dosent smoke. Also even though I knew it was bad for your health, but I saw people on TV who I dug smoked and they looked cool. Around 13 I tried it but the few times I did it I nearly choked to death, so I decided its not for me. I do wish my mother would quit smoking. She's over 60 and has already had a few issues with her health.
