Actor Chevy Chase is back on TV in NBC's 'Community'
Raphael Miranda
PASADENA, Calif. - Chevy Chase, who bolted from TV more than 30 years ago and became a movie star, told TV writers he's happy to be back.
"Films lately aren't as good as what I see on TV," said Chase, who stars this fall in the new NBC comedy "Community."
Chase plays the "old guy" in an ensemble show about a wacky study group at a community college.
"I never thought I would be in a situation comedy until I read the script" by Dan Harmon, Chase said. "It's great writing."
Chase plays an off-center father figure to the younger characters. During a panel talk, his co-stars joked about his actually being alive in the time of, say, the Beatles.
"This is the best cast I've worked with since ..." Chase started to say when someone cut him off and said "The Oxbow Incident," a movie from 1943.
Harmon said Chase was one of the first characters he cast, "so we landed that whale." When the actor cast a sideways glance, Harmon added, "So you're sensitive about your age AND your weight?"
Chase later said he'd be happy to make another return to TV. "I'd love to host 'Saturday Night Live,'" he said. "It's up to [producer] Lorne [Michaels]."
