PHILADELPHIA
Decked out in suits, A.J. O'Malley and Sean Christman stood for hours Wednesday in the middle of heavy traffic under a Philadelphia overpass with their arms outstretched clutching copies of their resumes.

From each of their necks hung poster boards that read "Rutgers and La Salle Graduates Need Work Take Resume."

The two men from Haddon Township, who graduated cum laude in May from their universities' business schools, hoped to entice potential employers with their display of determination and sacrifice.

Between 6:30 a.m. and 10:30 a.m., the men stood on an elevated median near the intersection of Franklin and Vine streets and handed out an estimated 150 resumes to drivers through open car windows.

"A lot of people said "Good luck,' shook our hands and said they'd pass our resumes along," Christman, 21, said. "But it only takes one person."

Christman said he surprised his parents when he and O'Malley, 22, began hawking their resumes on the street two weeks ago.

"I woke up at 5:15 a.m. and my mom said, "What are you doing?' When I told her, she couldn't believe it," he said. "This sends a strong message that I'm hard working and will stop at nothing to get the job done and hopefully that can be an asset to a company."

Christman, who said he graduated from La Salle University with a 3.48 grade point average and was a volunteer for the Big Brothers and Big Sisters in Philadelphia, said his dream job is in sports finance, but he's also intrigued by risk management or hedge fund positions.

O'Malley, who said he graduated from Rutgers University-Camden with a 3.56 grade point average and was a three-year captain of the university's soccer team, said he'd be happy with anything in the business of finance field.

Christman and O'Malley said they made valuable contacts and received several e-mail messages and phone calls from people who took their resumes in the city two weeks ago.

Christman and O'Malley said their goal is to stand out among recent graduates, most of whom they know are too in the hunt for their first full-time job as well. They said they've applied, mainly online, for dozens of jobs since December and have tried cold calling companies and finagling unscheduled face-to-face interviews with employers.

The two said they hope Wednesday will be the last time they have to beg for jobs in the city, but that they will go out again if necessary.

Whatever happened to filling out applications and turning them in to a place that is hiring??

There was this one guy on our local news who'd printed his resume on the back of his shirt, so I'm not really surprised. Hey, sometimes being creative can pay off.

They would be the kind of people who I would actually take seriously. I would call them in for an interview.

Absolutely. They're appropriately attired and clearly willing to go the extra yard to get noticed. If I were a hiring manager passing by I'd be impressed by their initiative and originality; I'd surely take a close look at their resume, and either call them in myself or pass it on to someone who might. I think they're go getters; good for them!! Of course I hope they're doing all the more conventional stuff too. (Now if they were dressed in a chicken costume or something else ultra-gimmicky it'd be another matter.)

Darn! Now I have to call the costume shop and cancel my order!

A lot of people may be put off by something like this, but to me it screams "I REALLY WANT TO WORK" and am willing to work hard and think outside the box. I hope they get an offer and applaud them.

lol, I was thinking exactly the same thing. Those two seem to be unafraid of anything. I think it would be well worth an interview at least.

One of the things we always hear about getting a job in tough times (or even in not-so-tough times) is "you need to stand out from the other applicants".

Well, what better way to stand out than this? And it seems to be somewhat of an original idea too.... this is the first time I've heard of anyone doing it this way...

We also hear a lot about "thinking outside the box". How much more outside the box can you get than this? :)

I hope that some reporter out there follows up with these two sometime in the near future to see if and how things worked out from this campaign. I'd love to hear how things worked out for them.

I don't watch reality shows, so I've never seen "The Apprentice", but would Donald Trump give these two a chance on that show? I know he has that Celebrity Apprentice Show, but I don't know how he decides what people to put on his regular show. Now that I think of it, is that show even still on?

Not everyone is going to take to this kind of approach & might think the guys are a little nuts. On the other hand, there are some (like me) who see them as having initiative and a willingness to work hard for what they want. Too each their own.

I wonder what would be said if a woman or a couple of women tried this? I definitely wouldn't recommend this method of job hunting for a female. Women these days need to be very, very careful about giving personal contact info to anyone she doesn't know, and handing out resumes to random people that drive by in their cars would be very risky behavior in their case.

In fact, I'll go ahead and say it, lol A woman would be crazy to try this.
