Shouldn't we have the option of using a SCREEN NAME??
Everyone I know on Facebook has their real name posted with their picture which makes it easier for STALKERS to find you.
This girl I been arguing with on another message board everyday has researched me and saw my pic and now comes back to site and whenever we insult each other now she says- "whatever SOLOMON!!!
It kind of creeped me out and now realy considering just deleting my page because it's too easy for people to find out about you.

I agree! I do not like that about facebook. I try to use it for only family and close friends...but occasionally I know someone will post on one of my photos and then their friends can see my pics. I know when we choose to post personal info on the internet nothing is 100% safe. Still, a username would be nice. I don't like that my first and last name are on there, but I guess if it wasn't people couldn't really find me. I guess it's a no-win situation!

Okay, I've been on facebook for 3 1/2 years. Let me explain a few things.
1. You CAN omit your last name, but you need to at least leave the first letter of your last name up (like John S. instead of John Smith).
2. You CAN choose to omit yourself from public searches.
3. You CAN choose to NOT have your picture show up in public searches.
4. Don't want people to know where you live? DON'T JOIN A NETWORK. You have that option now. When I joined facebook at the beginning of 2006, you HAD to join a network. Not joining a network was NOT an option then.
5. Simple... Don't put up any identifying info about yourself in your profile if you're that worried. I have the high schools AND the college I attended up in my profile, but that's it.
I used to have myself omitted from public searches, but now I have it so if you search for my name, you can't see my picture or my friends. I have never had any nasty problems in my 3 1/2 years on facebook.
I would be extremely angry if facebook started going the username route. This isn't myspace.

I agree wholeheartedly! I'm very careful about what goes on my profile. Only my name, the town I live in, and who I'm married to is up there AND THAT'S IT!
Besides, everyone on this board calls you Solomon, anyway, so what's the big deal? If you don't want your first name generally known, be like one of my friends and put yourself up on Facebook under an alias.

Thanks for the info. I am VERY new to facebook and still trying to figure it all out. I have chosen not to list several things on there, but I didn't know you could eliminate yourself from searches or eliminate your last name and things like that. I need to get on and change some things now that I know I can. :)

I disagree. People are dumb enough to post their phone numbers and address in the address & cell phone number bars on the facebook information part of your profile on their. You can obviously leave it blank, but people still leave it, I don't though, I never would. So what if somebody knows your last name? It's not like they know your pin number or SSN to get your money- lol. I don't like the idea of a screen name. Too many sites have that idea. Facebook is original and I really like that it shows people's real names. That way I can easily find all of my friends from elementary- college. I have over 1200 friends because of it.
I have a friend who has her name, address, phone number, and place of employment listed on there and she doesn't have her profile set as private. Anyone can see it! She scares me to death doing things like that! I have none of that listed and I only share info. with friends anyway.

I have never filled out the work section of my profile. I don't have my cell or phone numbers on there either. Usually when I connect with people that I haven't seen in years they send me a private message to ask for my numbers. I knew people who used to put their whole adresses on their profiles or a few people would put the name of the apartment complex they lived in. I would never post any info on where I live.

True, I wouldn't mind catching up with a couple of exes, but some people just belong in the past.

lol, and they delete your account if you have an unusual last name because they assume you're lying. facebook sucks. boring, confusing as hell, they hold you under a microscope. i keep deactivating and reactivating my account since it's the only way i talk to some people.

I have my profile set to private, my address and phone number aren't on there and I only add people I know to my friends list. It's not that hard to keep things private on Facebook.

Everything in connection to both of my Facebook and MySpace are set to private; on both site, I do not reveal any personal information about me, like where I live, last name, etc. Also, on Facebook, I use a fictitious name; all of my personal info: is set to my access only...

I know her last name, because I saw it on the receipt when she signed her name...
...I've hung out with her IRL. :)
And yeah, that is most definitely not her last name. That's not even the letter her last name starts with.
