Sad news for Beatles fans. Gordon Waller passed away this morning of a massive heart attack. He was 64.

Waller was half of the popular sixties singing duo, Peter and Gordon, whose hit songs included the number 1 hit, "World Without Love", which was written for them by John Lennon and Paul McCartney.

This message was posted today to the Peter and Gordon myspace page:

"We are deeply saddened to report that some time after 8:00 p.m. last night east coast time, Gordon Waller went into cardiac arrest and was taken to the emergency room. Despite intensive efforts on his behalf by hospital personnel, Gordon passed away early this morning. Please keep him in your thoughts and prayers."

Waller met Pete Asher at school and they began peforming together as Peter and Gordon. In the early sixties, Peter Asher's sister, Jane Asher, was Paul McCartney's girlfriend, and with Paul spending a lot of time over at the Asher home, a musical relationship was also formed between Peter and Gordon and Paul McCartney.

Peter and Gordon's rendition of "A World Without Love" became the first Lennon-McCartney composition, not recorded by The Beatles, to reach number one on the charts, in June, 1964. Another Lennon-McCartney song, "Nobody I Know", followed soon after. Their 1966 hit release "Woman" was written by Paul McCartney under the pseudonym, "Bernard Webb", as McCartney was eager to see if he could score a hit song without the Lennon-McCartney names attached.

Peter and Gordon disbanded in 1968, they finally reunited, appearing at Beatlesfests in 2007 and 2008, and performed in 2008 in Las Vegas and Santa Monica, Ca.

Here are a couple of useless facts about Peter & Gordon

"A World Without Love" was the first song by a British act after the Beatles to go to number one in America in 1964.

The song "Woman" was written by one Bernard Webb (or something like that). That is a pen name Paul McCartney came up with. He used a phoney name to see if Peter & Gordon could have a hit without the Lennon-McCartney connection and he was right.
