Well, I’m getting a new guitar player as we speak,” said Ozzy, “and everyone has been saying to me for a long time, ‘Get Johnny 5!’ And I tried him at one time and I didn’t really give him a chance. We’ll see, I don’t know. I haven’t fallen out with Zakk, but Zakk’s got his own band, and I felt like my stuff was beginning to sound like Black Label Society. I just felt like I wanted a change, y’know?

“I’ve got a guy from Greece coming in – not the musical, the country of Greece – but I’m not going to say too much about it, cos I don’t know myself at this point. I’ve got a new album, I’m working on it as we speak. I’ve got a studio at my house and I’ve got a guy called Kevin Churko, the guy that did the last album [Churko also worked on Ozzy’s Under Cover album, produced Cheap Trick’s highly rated 2006 album Rockford, and has credits on releases by Britney Spears, Celine Dion and Shania Twain] – he’s great to work with.

This is definitely a good thing! Ozzy's records sound like a shell of what they used to be. Granted the man can barely speak let alone sing anymore, but he is a legend nonetheless and change can be a good thing. But really, if he's still working with a glorified pop producer how much change will we really see? I predict this will just be an extremely accessible rock record that adults who have no interest in heavy metal could get into. Either way, I'm definitely curious to hear what the Ozzman comes up with.

UPDATE: Looks like Ozzy didn't bother telling Zakk first. Wylde just updated his Twitter account with the following two tweets:

I haven't heard anything about this. Until I talk to the Boss I don't know. I love Ozzy.

I'm doing Blizzcon with him in August and supposed to finish up the cd in September….this is news to me

What are the chances that Zakk was so drunk when Ozzy told him that he can't remember? Or, that Ozzy just decided to replace Zakk during the interview he was giving? Either way, seems like there is some trouble there. We will continue following this story as it progresses.

During senior year of high school I was a huge Black Sabbath fan. I thought that their music was liteally about me. The anger and the frustration in the music was exactly what I was going through at the time and feeling at the time. I still lsiten to the Sabbath albums from time to time.

This being said, Ozzy has turned into an old geezer. He's almost become a joke.

i don't think this is a big deal - if Zakk wants to be in the band all he has to do is show up; Ozzy is not going to remember it if he fires him.

Same here, I totally related to Black Sabbath in junior high and high school in the 70's. It was all about me, me against the evil world. They are the most important, most influential band of all time. No one spoke about the way things were the way they did.

Which makes me wonder why the hell Ozzy has become a geezer in recent years. He's more of a geezer than Geezer Butler!! ohno: Ozzy's a sellout. Thanks to $haron.

Btw, I've heard that's just a rumor about Zakk Wylde getting the axe. But you never know. I'll find the article. Even so, I think Zakk should move on and make more of a name for himself rather than being Ozzy's lackey.

Well, Zakk has been with Ozzy for over twenty years, they have had quite a long relationship. Ozzy's cognitive capacity (or lack thereof) has been a little exaggerated.

But not by much. ;)

Is Ozzy even allowed to fire anyone without Sharon's permission?

I also read that one reason that Ozzy allegedly fired Zakk was that he didn't want his music to sound like another Black Label Society album.

Replaced or Not? Your Guess is as Good as Ours

As previously reported, Classic Rock recently did a quick interview with Ozzy Osbourne a a festival gig in Norway, where it was rumored guitarist John 5 (ex-Marilyn Manson, current Rob Zombie) was selected to replace Zakk Wylde as Ozzy's guitarist.

“Well, I’m getting a new guitar player as we speak,” said Ozzy, “and everyone has been saying to me for a long time, ‘Get Johnny 5!’ And I tried him at one time and I didn’t really give him a chance. We’ll see, I don’t know. I haven’t fallen out with Zakk, but Zakk’s got his own band, and I felt like my stuff was beginning to sound like Black Label Society. I just felt like I wanted a change, y’know?"

Wylde reportedly met with Ozzy on Monday, and in a post-meeting Tweet he said, "Hey Berserkers, Everything is great with Ozzy/Dad. See you at the BlizzCon convention in Anaheim (CA) August 22nd or before with BLS."

Taken for face value, and in 140 characters or less, Zakk neither confirmed, nor denied being replaced, so stay tuned.

He's had his own band, Black Label Society, for well over a decade now.

I think he continues to work with Ozzy for the money, so he can do things like Black Label Society, which doesn't sell nearly as many albums as Ozzy does. Being Ozzy's sideman allows him to be able to make a living.

I wonder what Randy Rhoads would have done if he had lived and stayed with Ozzy. Before he died, he was going to leave the band and pursue classical guitar. Would he have made much money as a solo artist? We'll never know. Being associated with Ozzy is no sure way to make a lucrative career. Just look at Jake E. Lee.

Ozzy said in an interview that even if Randy had lived, he wouldn't be playing for him anymore. I've read comments from ex-band members that supposedly Ozzy punched Rhoads when he told him he would be leaving. Of course, it's from an ex-member, so take it with a grain of salt.

I think Rhoads would have made some interesting albums, to be sure. But we'll never know, sadly.

I also read that Randy got tired of the road and of playing with Ozzy then. Too many freaky fans going on, and Randy had more of a quiet upbringing than that. And I also read that Ozzy punched him when he announced his decision to quit. I can see that would also sour Rhoads on playing further with Ozzy.

That's one of the great injustices of rock and roll that we'll never get to see
what Randy could have done. Producer Max Norman said that he hadn't even peaked anywhere near his true potential as a guitar. Today he would have been devastating. Considering how great he was when he left this world, that says something about his abilities. :(

Yep. I'm sure having a brief affair with Sharon probably muddled things up for Randy as well. An friend of Randy's once said that he was embarrassed to be playing old Black Sabbath songs. Apparently, he wasn't a fan.

Yeah, I also read that he slept with $haron for a while before she and Ozzy officially became an "item". Or maybe it WAS while they started going together, who knows. That could explain a lot, why he didn't want to play much longer with Ozzy, some jealousy and conflict of interests involved.
(I still say, sleeping with $haron was proof that Randy took drugs, for all the "teetotaler" image he developed! ;) :joke: )

I also read that Randy wasn't into playing Sabbath songs. Even though he did a few on the posthumous 'Tribute' album. As a huge Sabbath fan, I could never see how anyone could not like Sabbath! But that was Randy. Sabbath was just one of these bands you either loved or hated.
