I own several dvds and every night i bring a few to work to help pass the time. a girl at work was looking at them one morning and asked to borrow one. after much begging, i reluctantly agreed, as i rarely loan out my stuff. i take meticulous care of my things and they are all in pristine condition.
so when she finally gave it back to me the disc was full of scratches and fingerprints and even the dvd case was cracked! i think thats so rude to treat other peoples property like junk! when i borrow something from somebody i treat it 10x better than my own belongings out of respect for that person.
i know people might think "whatever, its a $10 dvd" but 1. its the principle 2. this was from my christmas movie collection which made it that more important to me and 3. the dvd has been out of print for quite a while. i originally bought in 2001 for $10 and now it costs anywhere between $40-60 on ebay, amazon and other sites i researched.
OH Nuts!

I don't blame you for being pi**ed. This is why I would NEVER lend mine out. I'd find an excuse. Some, if I get a little tired of them, I'd just give away.

I think your coworker was very inconsiderate. If the DVD was still in print, I would ask her to pick you up a new copy. That is the least that she could do.
By the way, what are you doing watching movies at work, huh? ;)

She should offer to pay you for it. If it were me, I'd be tempted to borrow one of hers and return it in the same condition.

I guess I can't blame you for not doing it. I've had people borrow stuff from me and never return it or it's damaged when I get it back. When it comes to dvd's, If someone wants to borrow one I just make a copy and loan that to them and the original stays with me.

You mean people keep coming in and they shut down the shelter? Are you still getting in trouble because it's really not your fault someone sneaks in before you get there?

You can buy some disc cleaner. If you go to Best Buy, they are sure to have it there. I bought some a few years ago to clean DVDs and CDs.

i used to answer phones, conduct intital intake of clients, provide food and basic necessities - bedding/towels/toiletries etc, sign people in and out, take inventory of donations and sort them etc. now they closed the shelter so basically i do absolutely zip. i sit here all night and either go on my laptop, or watch a movie and answer phone calls. thats it! so boring now!

well our building was comprised of 2 programs. one was an emergency shelter, we had 20 beds and the other part of the program was 18 subsidized apartments. the shelter closed in april, but the apartment portion of our program is still running.
the people in the apartments have curfews though, which is 10pm, but a lot like to sneak out in the middle of the night to go buy drugs or visit their b/f's or go clubbing. so i have to write down times people go in and out past their curfew on my shift

I can relate to this but what happened to me is much worse. In my office, the people who are just under the managers are called Leads.
A woman that I work with brought this bear that sings to show everyone. It sings that song "I Wanna Be Loved By You".
Our department Lead was just fascinated by that song, so I asked her if she'd ever seen "Some Like it Hot". She was going around singing it all the time. One day she did something really nice for me, so I decided to loan it to her. I am not kidding when I say that this was over a year and a half ago, and she STILL hasn't returned it. I asked her day after day and nothing happened.
SLIH is my favorite movie, and I got so sick of asking her for my copy, that I just went out and bought another one. The thing that really ticks me off is that she didn't even WATCH it!
So to this day, I won't loan out anything at work.

I loaned my brother 80 percent of my cd collection when he was going into rehab last year, and he lost everyone of them. 15 years of collecting down the toilet just like that. Since then, I don't lend anything out unless it's to someone I can trust my life with.

This happened to my sister as well. She lent her next door neighbors her dvds of 'That 70's Show' and they were returned to her all scratched up. My sister is more meticulous than me when it comes to her stuff (if thats possible) and doesn't like to lend out her things either but the neighbors were longtime friends of my brother-in-law (he knew them before ever meeting my sister) so she felt obligated by his friendship with them and was trying to be neighborly in general.
She had to replace 3 seasons worth!!!

I have the DVD of that movie. It's out of print? Maybe one day the Special Edition will come out. Okay, I couldn't say that with a straight face.
My cousin apparently was in a scene in that movie but it was cut out. I bought the DVD on the rare chance that they had deleted scenes, but they didn't.
By the way, returning a dvd in the condition she did is beyond wrong. That's horrible.

You have every right to be upset and expect to be compensated in some way. Obviously, your co-worker was never taught decent manners.

You have a right to be upset. I would be mad too. I rarely loan or borrow stuff. But if I borrow something I take good care of the item. I also sometimes watches movies towards the work day too. Mostly the last two hours of work aren't busy we just stay in the office to take calls and file any invoices that come in. My other two coworkers spend the downtime surfing the net or talking to relatives on their cell phones. I have my own little office and I keep a portable DVD player there. Somedays if I don't feel like watching a movie I just get online and do stuff.

I had a job where I sat in the lobby and answered phones and directed people; it was a snoozefest. I played games on the internet all the time. Then one day the company got some heavy-duty internet security and I couldn't go to any site that had "games" as a keyword. I was :livid: so I quit. 5 Hours with nothing to do SUCKS.

My dad has seen that movie 1000 times. It's a good one. One reason I liked the new Dragnet that aired in the early 2000s was because it was kind of a Dutch reunion.

It's a great idea to make a copy. Actually I almost taped Some Like It Hot off of TV and gave it to my friend, since VHS tapes aren't a big deal to me if they get lost or something. However, I decided to be nice and give her the commercial free version. Still ticks me off, but I just got tired of asking her for the DVD. I bet it's still in her bag and she is oblivious to the fact that I even loaned it to her.
