Personally, I think Spielberg is highly overrated. He's an adequate director, but nothing legendary. He doesn't have any sort of signature style the way the auteurs (Minnelli, Hitchcock, Huston) did. His name is so famous that people just assume he directed tons of movies that he never actually did. This is an actual conversation I had with my uncle:
ME: I don't think Spielberg is that great of a director.
TODD: Are you kidding? He's legendary!
ME: How so?
TODD: Name one other director that could have made American Grafitti.
ME: George Lucas.
He gets credit for movies he didn't even make. That's fame. Anyways, of the movies he did make, I liked:
-Catch Me if You Can
-Jaws
-Jurassic Park
-Hook
-Minority Report
I'll even be brave and admit that I didn't like "ET." I thought it was dumb. I hated "War of the Worlds" and I couldn't bear to sit through all of "Artificial Intelligence."
Duel
Jaws
Twilight Zone the Movie
Night Gallery
Which section of Twilight Zone did he do? I'm thinking it was the "Kick the Can" part but I can't remember.

E.T.
Saving Private Ryan
^ I'll never get the ET hype. Weird movie about a funny little alien that hangs out with kids then goes home. Plot sounds worthy of the Disney Channel.
