Darren Bousman Directed Mother's Day Gets Greenlit!
Friday, May 8, 2009
By: MrDisgusting
Testify! Some pretty huge news comes just in time for Mother's Day as Twisted Pictures, the Genre Co. and Rat Entertainment have lined up a financing deal with LightTower Entertainment to remake Charles Kaufman's 1980 Troma cult classic Mother's Day. Darren Lynn Bousman, who has helmed three films in the Saw franchise and the culty horror-musical Repo! The Genetic Opera, is attached to direct from a script by Scott Milam! Read on for all the juicy details.
The original "Mother's Day" revolved around three female friends who, while camping, run afoul of two brothers who engage in murder and rape to impress their deranged mother. The remake sees the villainous family return to the house where they grew up and terrorize the new owners and their guests.
"We're taking the iconic image of a mother, the most comforting and nurturing person in the world, and perverting that into something that is punishing and sadistic," Genre's Richard Saperstein said.
He added that the remake will be timely, reflecting today's foreclosures and tough economic times. "She's lost her house," Saperstein said. "Her boys are going to get it back to her."
Saperstein is producing with Genre's Brian Witten. "Saw" producers Mark Burg, Oren Koules and Carl Mazzocone also are producing, as are Brett Ratner and Jay Stern through Rat Entertainment.
LightTower partners Jonathan Zucker and Curtis Leopardo are executive producers on the project. Kaufman and Troma Entertainment co-founder Lloyd Kaufman also will exec produce, as will Genre's Stephen Kessler. Shara Kay will co-produce. Jessie Rusu is an associate producer.
The producers are eyeing a July start and a spring release timed for Mother's Day 2010.
Saperstein acknowledged that many horror movies are seeing their tone informed by last year's surprise hit "The Strangers." He said the tone of the "Mother's Day" remake "will be post-'Strangers' in that is has very realistic qualities but has a high-concept overlay, this punishing maternal figure."

The original was sooo cheesy and stupid; I don't know if they will do that the same way or make it "more serious" for the remake.

I don't think the original was stupid at all, it was one of the most entertaining exploitation flicks to come out of the early 80's. And of course it was cheesy it was from the Kaufman brothers.
We'll probably get a needless backstory to Queenie, or they'll leave her out totally.
The original was fun because it wasn't meant to be serious, a more realistic tone will make it into another boring remake like The Last House On The Left.

The very first time I saw this movie, I rented it on VHS with a friend from high school from the local video rental. We just fast-forwarded to the death scenes.
I watched it again maybe a couple of years ago and it was 'entertaning' but I wouldn't say one of the best exploitation flicks.
We'll see how they work with the remake, but hopefully they won't "go serious" on it.

This has turned into a rental for me. Hollywood is more concerned with getting as many popular pretty faced actresses, most likely the film will be watered down and PC. Too bad all this wasted money wasn't given to Lloyd Kaufman's brother so he could make his once planned follow up to Mother's Day...then again he didn't need a Hollywood budget to make an entertaining film. Next we'll get a PG-13 remake of The Toxic Avenger- shouldn't have said that, I just gave Hollywood an idea....

Yet More Mother's Day Casting...
Thursday, September 3, 2009
By: BC
How many people are in this movie anyway?
Even without reading a synopsis, the sheer number of actors being hired (with more to come!) should tell you that Darren Bousman's "remake" of Mother's Day is a completely different beast, as that film only had like six people in it.
Well now you can add another name to the list: Bousman just announced via his Twitter page that AJ Cook has joined the cast as well. You might remember her as the heroine from Final Destination 2.
She joins previously announced Rebecca DeMornay, Lyriq Bent, Briana Evigan, Alexa Vega, Jaime King, Matt O'Leary, Shawn Ashmore... and I think a dozen others. But hey, more characters = more kills, right? Sweet.

Mother's Day Lands Another Genre Vet
Friday, September 11, 2009

Andrew Bryniarski, who is the only actor to play Leatherface twice (in the two Platinum Dunes' incarnations of the Texas Chainsaw saga) has been added to the ever-expanding cast of Darren Bousman's remake of Mother's Day, which has just begun shooting in Canada.
His role is said to be a "dark and mysterious" one - maybe he plays Queenie? (Fans of the original will get that.) Also of note is that actor J LaRose's appearance in the film marks the NINTH time Bousman and Larose have worked together!
Read on for the press release.
LOS ANGELES (September 11, 2009) – Horror icon Andrew Bryniarski is set to appear in the remake of the cult horror film “Mother’s Day,” which began filming September 8, 2009.
Bryniarski, best known for his role as Leatherface in “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre” (2003) and “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning” (2004), has been designated for an undisclosed role in Mother’s Day.
“Given Andrew’s iconic status in the horror-thriller genre, we wanted to give him a special part that will intentionally be clouded in mystery until the film is released,” said Curtis Leopardo, executive producer of Mother’s Day and founder of LightTower Entertainment.
“We don’t want to spoil the surprise for avid Texas Chainsaw fans, but we’re thrilled to bring Andrew on board for what will certainly become a dark and mysterious role,” said Leopardo, who along with industry executive Cara Marie launched a talent management branch of LightTower Entertainment and are managing Andrew Bryaniarski.

First Look at Deborah Ann Woll in Mother's Day, Bousman Talks Blood
Tuesday, October 13, 2009
By: MrDisgusting
The official website just launched today for Darren Lynn Bousman's Mother's Day, a sure change of direction for the man behind Saw II-IV and Repo! The Genetic Opera.
In addition, beyond the break you'll find an exclusive look at Deborah Ann Woll ("True Blood") as Lydia in the Twisted Pictures flick now filming in Winnipeg, Canada, along with word from Bousman about the blood levels of the pic and how this is NOT a remake.
While Bousman has been the director on three SAW films, he promises that this is not the same kind of blood and violence.
"It's definitely violent, but not like the other films I have done," he tells Bloody Disgusting in a brief exclusive interview.
""MOTHER'S DAY" is all about the characters and not the violence. While the blood does flow, it's a much different film than I have ever done before. The violence and gore are part of the story, and not [there] just to gross people out. It's as much of a thriller/suspense as it is a horror film."
A lot of our readers have been asking if this is a direct remake of the classic 1980 Troma film, the answer is no, this is a whole new story... with a mother.
"I love the 1980's Charles Kaufman movie, but this film is not that. We had Lloyd and Charles on set, and we all agreed, you could not do a carbon copy remake of his classic. It just wouldn't work," Bousman explains.
"That film has been borrowed from, stole from, and re-done countless times before. Our version holds true to the theme of what he started, and takes it to the next level."
"Basically, we took Charles story, and put it in today's world, in today's economic climate, and asked what would this dysfunctional family be like right now in this environment?" he continues.
"We have kept the idea of this strong villainous iconic Mother (played by Rebecca De Mornay), and her grasp over her children. Her power to control them, and nurture their evil ways. The killing, the murder, the carnage all to make 'mother very proud' is still very much apart of "MOTHER'S DAY". Fans will find we add homage, a TON actually- but this is its own beast, its own film."

SCREAM '09: Jamie King on Unnerving Mother's Day Shoot
Sunday, October 18, 2009
By: MrDisgusting
One of the more interesting conversations we had on the red carpet of the 2009 Scream Awards (airing Tuesday, October 27 at 10:00PM ET/PT) was with Mother's Day star Jamie King, who took a day off from a brutal shoot to talk with press.
Beyond the break you can read about a crazy on set fiasco that happened tonight(!), along with how the film feels like an unnerving documentary.
When asked if she was wrapped on MOTHER’S DAY, she explains she had one more week to go.
“No, I fly back in like 6 hours for one more week,” she tells Bloody Disgusting adding a bit about her character.
“I play the lead role, my character, her name is Beth, and she’s a very traumatized woman. She just lost her child about 9 months ago and then their house is unintentionally invaded and then she has to basically – you know it’s ‘what would you do to protect the ones you love and yourself?’”
“I am one of the captives,” she continues, “my captivity, it’s all the way through. It’s not the ensemble, mine’s more of the lead captive.”
Earlier today director Darren Bousman was Tweeting about some crazy events that occurred on the set. “OMG our actors just got pulled over by six cops with guns drawn while filming a Gun scene! cops thought it was REAL!!!!” He adds, “turns out there was a bank robbery, the police saw our actors with guns! luckily the police were VERY cool! just doing their job!”
I asked Jamie about the fiasco and she told us she’s glad she missed it.
“I heard! It’s crazy…I missed it. I’m glad I missed it as I’ve had plenty of fiascos.”
While Bousman has openly said it’s not an insanely violent movie, King does say she gets a nice dose of blood sprayed on her.
“I get pretty bloody sometimes and I even ask for extra blood. Like in one scene I’m like ‘Can I get some more blood in my mouth?’ I don’t know why, it just looked cool.”
And while it’s not incredibly bloody, MOTHER’S DAY is going to be an unnerving movie because it’s based on true events.
“It’s very uncomfortable, it’s not like a horror film, everything that happens in it has happened in real life and so it’s really disturbing because you know that what these people have gone through has actually really happened,” adding that the way it’s shot lends to the terror.
“And it’s shot in a way that feels almost like a documentary so when I watch the scenes back its really disturbing because I know its real.”
MOTHER’S DAY is aiming for a release Mother’s Day of 2010.

EXCL: How Darren Bousman Celebrates Mother's Day
Source:Ryan Rotten, Managing Editor
October 20, 2009
In addition to putting a new spin on Mother's Day, a remake of Charles Kaufman's 1980 Troma production, director Darren Lynn Bousman is setting out to bring horror back to the suburbs. Not just adopt the idyllic look of Norman Rockwell's America, but "ass rape it," as he puts it.
"That's kind of what we've done. Take it and set it in Middle America, every day life. It's a Norman Rockwell gone wrong idea. Imagine if it was set in Leave It to Beaver, then make it scary," explains Bousman during an afternoon break from shooting day 27 of 35 in Winnipeg, Canada.
"The original was set in the barrens, this little disgusting cabin stuffed in the woods. That may have been scary 30 years ago but it's not scary right now."
After departing from the Saw franchise (where he helmed three installments) and veering outside of the career path box with Repo! The Genetic Opera, Bousman's future was uncertain.
Not that he didn't have projects lined up. Next to the likes of Guillermo Del Toro, Bousman was one director who seemed to be attached to everything, from a Scanners remake to a reboot of the Hellraiser franchise. Yet what his next feature was going to be was always up in the air.
While he decided, he knocked out an episode of Fear Itself called "New Year's Day." Then came the rumors that he was circling another famous "day" on the calendar, Mother's Day, an obscure title to resurrect, but one with a following among cult film aficionados.
"I've turned down every remake that has come to me - when it was "Hellraiser", "Children of the Corn", all of them," he says. "They're too popular, there's too much of a built-in fan base. There are die-hard fans of Charlie Kaufman's "Mother's Day" but I think it's nowhere near as great as the fans of Pinhead and the fans of Malachai or Isaac. It wasn't like I was ****ting on the holy grail of remakes.
I would never do a remake without the creator's blessing and one of the first things I did was get on the phone with Lloyd and Charles Kaufman. I told them if I'm going to do a remake, here is the way I want to do it, are you cool with this?
The worst thing in the world is to do a remake like "Hellraiser", then have Clive Barker sh*t on it. One of the most important things to me was to have the original production team be okay with what I was doing."
Bousman admits to originally turning the remake down when producer Richard Saperstein approached him to do it. It wasn't until Brett Ratner (X-Men: The Last Stand) came a-callin' that Bousman reconsidered his decision.
"He pitched me on why he wanted to produce the movie. He wasn't trying to rip the movie off, he didn't want to do a carbon copy. I brought in [writer] Scott Milam and together we hashed out how we could do this without alienating the fans and do something that's unique with it."
"We came up with an idea that plays a massive homage to the original film but is completely different from the original film," he continues, weaving a mystery with what exactly we should expect.
"If you took that family that lived in the 1980s film and put them into today's economic times, the things we're dealing with now, how do you make them real? I think it works masterfully and Scott did a great job. You have the same archetypal characters. The iconic mother, then there's Ike and Addley whose main purpose is to make sure mom is happy and proud. Again, it's the same basic premise, mother allows her kids to torture and torment a group of victims while she scoffs and laughs.
It deals with the same things that Charlie Kaufman's film dealt with. What I loved about the original is that it's more than an exploitation film. There was a message in there and it's steeped in a lot of different things. That's one thing we have tried to do as well."
The story Bousman and Milam tell is a bloody family affair that centers on three brothers - Johnny, Ike and Addley - after a botched bank robbery. They head to their mother's house to seek refuge only to find she no longer lives there. A couple now reside in their childhood home and they're none too pleased about this. The couple and their guests soon become hostages and the brothers are quickly reunited with their sinister mother (played by Rebecca De Mornay).
Rounding out the cast is Jaime King (My Bloody Valentine 3-D), Patrick Flueger, Warren Kole, Deborah Ann Woll (True Blood), Matt O'Leary, Briana Evigan (Sorority Row), Kandyse McClure (Battlstar Galactica) and Shawn Ashmore (The Ruins).
"This cast is so f**kin' insane," Bousman says excitedly.
"There's not a weak link in it. It starts with the brothers played by Patrick Flueger, Matt O'Leary and Warren Kole. These guys…you feel for them. Then you're quickly introduced to the victims and you love them. Then you get to meet mother and Deborah Anne Woll [as the sister]. They all elevated what was on the page. I think the movie, as I realized on day three, was not the movie I was making in pre-production, it's weird to say. It was because the movie morphed itself into something completely different. I thought it was going to be a fun, crazy, violent movie, but it's more than that."
"We're shooting this scene on day five and it was a really violent scene," he adds.
"Bones were being snapped and it was horrific. We had storyboards and it's probably one of the most violent things I've shot. As we were shooting, the prosthetics were not working. I didn't care, I said let's move on. We never went back to shoot those bones breaking, because I realized shooting this movie, that it did not matter.
That's not what made it scary, not the bones, not the blood, it was everything going on around it. The reaction of the brothers, the reaction of the victims. Violence takes the back seat to what's f**ked up in the front of the camera. This movie is extremely violent, but that's not what the movie is to me."
Aside from these revelations, Bousman says one of the other exciting elements of making the film is watching his cast interact off-camera. He explains they've broken up into factions based on their characters. The brothers in the film have been isolating themselves from their on-camera victims; while the victims socialize separately from their aggressors.
Meanwhile, "Mother is having family dinners with her family. There has been on and off animosity on the set within the character structure. It's awesome and completely unplanned. There have been some ongoing battles with the family versus the victims. Everyone loves everyone but it's completely showing on the screen and the characters are taking over."
Like Repo!, which he describes as a "f**k you to everyone" seeking standard horror fare, Bousman is hoping Mother's Day breaks the norm on a number of levels while making the audience relate to the situations and characters - something, he believes, was tough to do in the original.
"Charles and Lloyd came to set and I was concerned with what Charles would think of the movie, but he completely got it. He said when he made his film he was making something that was right for the times. Something that was easily accessible for him.
We have not seen this type of movie we're making, I think what scares me about it is that this could really happen. It says, this could be you. One thing that always kills me in horror films is when people act really stupid, we've taken extreme consideration and care. How would people realistically react in this situation?"
"If I'm doing my job correctly, you're not going to know who you're supposed to be rooting for," he reveals.
"You might root for Ike. It might be Addley. Part of it might be the victims. Part is going to be rooting for mother. Who is the good guy and who is the bad guy?"
Find out when Mother's Day opens in theaters sometime around Mother's Day of 2010.

Ashmore Divulges Plot Details For Mother's Day
Source:Robg.
February 4, 2010
While chatting with actor Shawn Ashmore about his latest film Frozen, Shock was able to shift the conversation towards Mother's Day, his next genre film from Saw sequel director Darren Lynn Bousman.
"'Mother's Day' is going to be a really dark, psychological thriller. It’s definitely bloody and it’s definitely gory, but I wouldn’t call it just a 'horror' movie," he explains.
"I play a character named George Barnum. In our movie, the Koffin brothers have robbed a bank and in the midst of robbing the bank, one of the brothers gets shot, so they go home to their mother’s house to lay low and figure out what to do. And they come bursting into their old childhood home and realize that everything’s different.
They realize that their mother had lost the house without telling them, and they stumble upon a birthday party with these 10 yuppie types partying in the basement. So they hold them all hostage and my character George is a doctor, so he’s given the task of keeping the brother alive or they’re going to kill everyone in the house. It's a really intense movie."
"I’ve only actually seen bits and pieces of the original 'Mother's Day'," confesses Ashmore, "but mainly because from what I was told, it’s different and they wanted me to do my own thing. There’s definitely some references, but it's based on the idea of the original with this psychopath family of crazy brothers with their mother leading the charge."
The actor also seemed excited by the impressive group of actors he got to work with on the update which included Rebecca De Mornay, Deborah Ann Woll (True Blood), Jaime King (VH1's upcoming Scream Queens), Patrick Flueger, Warren Kole, Matt O'Leary and Briana Evigan (Sorority Row).
"It was also strange too because it was almost the complete opposite filming experience compared to 'Frozen'. For 'Mother's Day', we were on a built set, as opposed to having three actors on a chair lift.
or this, we had 20 actors, this huge ensemble cast and you’re trying to weave your character into this story. Darren was great to work with and I’m really excited to see how it turns out."

A Mother's Day Update
Feb. 20, 2010
Mother's Day has been one of the greatest, and toughest challenges as a filmmaker. When I directed SAW 2, Mark Burg, one of the film’s producers, warned me about the amount of characters I had in the script. “It’s gonna be a nightmare to keep track of them all!” I laughed it off, shot the movie, and cried during editing – because he was right. There were a lot of characters – and at times, became a nightmare in post.
When the script came in for Mother's Day, the film’s producer Richard Saperstein pointed out that there were a lot of characters in the script. Like SAW 2, I laughed it off, and said I can handle it. Now, here I am in post, again crying… Not because it’s hard to keep track of everyone, but because every single person in this movie is AMAZING and I don’t want to cut one frame of their performances… They gave me GOLD – and GOLD shall I deliver.
But, alas, part of the post process is cutting down scenes, performances, and story to fit in cohesive, dramatic fashion… AND NOT BE 6 hours long…
Every scene is my favorite scene, every character is my favorite character, so having to part with even ONE frame is like watching my dog Chance being slapped in the face… It’s painful and heartbreaking. That being said… It’s a champagne problem and the tighter this movie gets, the better it becomes….
I am sitting in the edit room now – watching the latest cut, and I feel like a proud father. It’s been an extremely difficult post process. In every movie I have done, there have been weak actors, weak scenes – so when I come in the edit room – it’s a simple choice – CUT THIS, CUT THAT. But with Mother's Day – every scene seems to work, every actor brings their A game…
What strikes me about Mother's Day is how gut wrenching and dramatically unrelenting it is – this ISN’T really a horror film as much a thriller – but damn it’s INTENSE…
In SAW the violence and gore was the main character after Jigsaw…
In REPO! the music was the main character after the Repo Man.
In Mothers Day, the CHARACTERS are the main characters. It’s exciting to me as a filmmaker to finally be able to showcase the story, and the script, and let the gore take a back seat.
That being said – Mother's Day is a violent movie, but it contains the type of violence that lives in the background, not fights for attention in foreground. Mother's Day is the type of film that punches you in the gut, due in large part by the amazing performances given from the cast.
Rebecca De Mornay has created an iconic villainess that has more depth, more dimension than anything we have seen in recent movies of this genre. Forget what you saw in THE HANDS THAT ROCKS THE CRADLE – that was Disney compared to this! She is the REAL DEAL – terrifying and yet wildly compelling.
We currently have not screened the movie to ANY distributor, as the whole movie was independently financed. Being independently financed gives us the luxury of taking our time and only showing studios our perfected edit.
Our initial goal was to fast track the post process and come out Mother’s Day 2010. But, as shooting began MAJOR movies started staking claim to that date and the weeks surrounding it. IRON MAN 2, A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET, ROBIN HOOD, SHREK 4, blah, blah, blah…
It is my opinion that MOTHER’S DAY is better than just the ‘gimmick’ of the title. We could come out in the month(s) following Mother’s Day and be fine… The movie will work whenever it’s released.
As one of out producers said “Mother’s Day could come on Labor Day this year… or on Halloween…. The story and character are the stars – not the title!”
Now that we all have a cut that we like – the hard part begins – and we start screening the movie to various people and focus groups… This is always a bitch for a director – or the creative force – as you pour your heart and soul into something, and then throw it out to a group of people who will watch the movie once, and tell you what’s wrong with it.
The hardest part of these screenings is knowing the movie is in such a rough state – no visual effects, no score, no sound design, no color correction – but I guess that’s part of the whole process, so bring it on…
With each movie I work on – I learn more about the craft… I consider myself lucky to have had such a strong script – and amazing actors…
I think fans of the original Charles Kaufman film will find a lot to like in this version. Yes, it’s completely different, but at its core – it’s the same perverse story of Mother and her kids.
A lot of people have been asking about when to expect a trailer… Hopefully sooner as opposed to later – but again, this is something that happens AFTER a distributor screens the movie and buys it. We are still a couple of weeks away from bringing our baby into the studios, and showing it to the buyers.
In my opinion, Mother's Day is the most intense movie I have worked on… Not intense due to senseless violence, exaggerated gore, or flashy editing – this is intensity brought on by the amazing ensemble cast – the story, and the moments…
Dear God – am I actually growing up as a filmmaker?!?

Director Darren Lynn Bousman updated his official website with an update on Mother's Day, which has been in post-production for the past few months going through various cuts and edits.
"It’s amazing seeing how this movie has grown, and changed. What was once undramatic now oozes drama. What was once not scary, is now terrifying," he explains.
"Watching how much this film has evolved in the last six weeks is nothing short of amazing."
The next step?
"We start the screenings to studios, and SELL IT!"
Hopefully this will lead to some news about when we'll all get to see this sucker in theaters.

What a missed oppurtunity to not release this on Mother's Day.
DLB said that's what he was originally aiming for but he decided against it because he didn't want to go against the other major movies around this time (Iron Man 2 and Nightmare remake).
He also said something along the lines of the movie not needing the gimmick of the Mother's Day holiday to be a success.

I can understand not wanting to compete with those two films. But, gimmick or not Mother's Day would have been a natural time to release it... The Omen made a great choice for when it was released.

Actor Frank Grillo Talks Mother's Day
Friday, June 11, 2010
By: Chris Eggertsen
In our interview with Frank Grillo, star of new summer ABC show "The Gates", we also spoke with him about his highly-anticipated upcoming project, Darren Lynn Bousman's update of the 1980 Troma exploitation film Mother's Day.
Frank Grillo has been quite the busy genre actor lately, with no less than three horror projects starring him to be released this year.
In Mother's Day, Grillo plays Daniel Sohapi, who moves to a small Midwestern town with his wife Beth (Jaime King) after the death of their five-year-old son.
While hosting a party for friends in their new home, a sociopathic family led by a sadistic Mother (Rebecca de Mornay) return to terrorize the new residents.
Grillo told me the producers are currently shopping the film to distributors and if all goes well are hoping to secure a release sometime between September and December of this year.
On a possible release date:
It has not been sold.
Brett Ratner, who is one of the producers of the film, I know is in the process of making that happen.
You know, it's a very specific film so it's a very specific type of studio that will release it.
So they're in the process actually of figuring that out, and they're looking to release this film sometime between September and December this year.
On seeing a cut of the film:
I was just amazed at what Bousman did, because I only know him from the SAW movies. He created such a tight thriller. It's not a slasher movie. I know people might expect that from him, but it's a really tight thriller with the right amount of gore and violence mixed in.
And it's really f*cking disturbing. You don't leave the movie with any sense of resolution. You just leave feeling a little icky.
Which frightens people away, you know? I kinda dig that.
I like leaving the film being uncertain.
On comparisons to the original Troma film:
Yeah, you know early on they got the idea from that film Mother's Day. And early on the movie evolved into something entirely different, it really did.
It's got a couple of parallel storylines that are similar, but it really stops there. This is really a character-driven piece. And it's really, really…it's really tightly made.
In other words, the level of suspense never lets you off the hook for a second, cause you never know what's gonna happen.
Whereas the other Mother's Day was truly a ‘B', gory slasher film. This one has very little resemblance to the other film.
On the movie's gore quotient:
If the SAW films are a '10', this is probably a ‘5'…
but the thing is, the characters are so frightening in the movie, the story sucks you in. You're afraid all the time, and you don't necessarily have to see the gore.
So when the gore is in the movie, it's really powerful.
And that's a testament to Darren, it really is.
On working with Rebecca de Mornay:
You know, to work with her, to watch her evolve, and watch the character unfold…she's so f*cking frightening.
When I worked with her, when I would do scenes with her…there's a scene with her and I, and she scared me so much when I was acting with her that I had to take a break.
She gets so deep into character. She scared the sh*t out of me…what's great about her is she took it to a level that was almost starting to be a little campy, and then she pulls it back.
So it's like, it becomes more of a character trait than it does like a showy thing.
And she's just brilliant, I can't wait for people to see her in this.

Exclusive: Where is Mother's Day? Plus, New Images!
Source: Ryan Turek, Managing Editor
March 21, 2011
As we near the end of the month, the question some genre fans are asking is: Where is Darren Lynn Bousman's redo of Mother's Day?
The film played to festival audiences, it was acquired by Gigapix Studios and was scheduled to open against James Wan's Insidious, which posed some friendly competition between the two SAW franchise directors.
"At one point we were releasing on April 1," Bousman explains to Shock when we call him up to find out the status of his flick.
"Then the weekend became over run with other genre flicks - I think the distributor wanted a quieter weekend. At this point I am only speculating - as I am not involved at all regarding the release...
With 'SAW', or 'Repo! The Genetic Opera' I was working with a company I had a strong relationship with as I had done numerous films with them. Lionsgate always kept me in the loop so I always knew where we were. This is not the case unfortunately this time out - for the most part, I get information the same time you do.
When I wake up, I scour the genre sites seeing what, if any information has been released"
So, is a backup release date planned and is it still anticipated to roll out theatrically?
"I emailed back and forth over the weekend with one of peeps at the distribution company. They assured me again it is coming out in theaters here - it is not a DVD release.
As for a date, that I can't give you. I know their plan is soon - as in second quarter of this year. Hopefully my obsessive emailing wears them out and they announce one soon."
"This has been my hardest experience as a filmmaker as hands down 'Mother's Day' is my best film to date," he adds.
"I have never been more proud of a film I have worked on. However, it's also the most brutal film I have done - this is not a light-hearted romp with mama. It's intense, it's violent, it's dramatic.
As much as it is tearing me apart waiting - I would rather wait and have them put the movie out at the right time - then just dump it on some crammed weekend.
I know a lot of my fans are sick and tired of waiting, trust me, no one is more sick and tired than I am. I hope they stay with me and this flick as I truly believe it will be worth the wait. It's a much different animal than say, 'SAW' or 'Repo!'. It's more 'adult' if that makes any sense."
Bousman says he has had the time to make a few changes to the film.
"Small stuff, but things I think will make a bigger impact when it finally does reach the audience!"
Check out a slew of new images from the film:
