This thread is dedicated to all the good lesser known movies you've seen, that you're curious if anyone else has seen. Just post a movie that is not very well known, or one that was once popular, but has since been forgotten, and people can respond to whether they've seen it or not, and what they thought of it. I also think this thread is a good idea for movie recommendations that people probably wouldn't get the chance to ever see normally, except with it being posted here, it gives them the chance to see an unknown gem. I will start with a very unknown movie that is actually my favorite movie of the 2000's, and one of my five favorites of all time. It's a documentary called "My Flesh and Blood". It actually won the audience choice award at the Sundance film festival in 2003. For anyone who is into extremely touching movies, you've got to see it!!! Everyone who watched it that I recommended it to, loved it, and if you're into emotional movies, you will probably love it too. In short, It's about a California woman named Susan Tom, who adopted 12 special needs children. So has anyone here seen this amazing film? If so, what did you think of it?? And for those who haven't seen it, look it up and rent it. I don't think you'll regret it!!

Here's a link to Rottentomatoes.com which talks about the movie further. As you'll see, it got amazing reviews, and scored a 90% on the tomato meter. For those not familiar with the tomato meter, 90% means it's really good!!

Here's a two minute trailer for My Flesh and Blood. I figured I'd post it, so that people could check it out, and see if it's something they'd be interested in seeing.

I haven't heard of that one, Little Mel, but it looks interesting.
Here's some of my favorites-

The Reflecting Skin '90- A boy growing up in the 1950's begins to believe that the woman who his older brother(Viggo Mortensen) has become involved with is a vampire. Very David Lynchian.

Doin' Time on Planet Earth '88- Quirky comedy about a teen who believes he's an alien. Adam West, Roddy McDowall, Maureen Stapleton.

The Chocolate War '88- New student rebels against his Catholic High School.

Purple Haze '83- College dropout in the late 60's trying to figure out what he's going to do with his life gets drafted into the war.

It really is a great movie, and you might want to check it out sometime. I haven't heard of any of the movies you mentioned, but I will definitely look them up, and see if they'd be something I might be interested in. Thanks for posting them!!

Btw, it's awesome to see a fellow Oregonian on the boards. I'm from Portland. I don't think there's a single consistent poster here from Oregon, other than myself on these boards, (I may be wrong), so it's great to see someone else from my home State representing here at S.O. I hope to see you post alot more in the future!!! :)

I saw UHF when I was about 10 years old, and got a kick out of it. Mainly because I was a fan of Weird Al's music back then. Can't remember the movie all that well, but I do remember it making my laugh my ass off!! I think UHF goes under the category of a cult classic, which definitely fits this thread, as cult classic are usually followed by a small number of total fanatics.

The Wizard of Speed and Time '88- In the late 70's struggling effects artist Mike Jittlov tried to get work in Hollywood. Jittlov wrote, directed, and stars as himself in this fictional comedic look at his real life experience of that.

Phantom Of The Paradise (1974) - an odd, 70's rock version of Phantom of the Opera' and a scathing satire on the music business at that time.

Sleuth (1972)- interesting cat and mouse thriller based on the London play- only two characters in the entire thing (Michael Caine and Laurence Olivier)- a thinking man's movie for sure.

I haven't seen any of the other movies listed, except for Better Off Dead, and was mildly amused by it. I will keep an eye out for some of the movies you all have mentioned though, and will check them out if they interest me. A couple of them peaked my interest already just by the titles, and the brief synopsis' you guys gave.

Here's another lesser known classic that's one of my 10 favorite films of all time. It's called "The Cure" and stars Brad Renfro, Annabella Sciorra, and Joseph Mazzello. It's about an 11 year old boy named Dexter, who was diagnosed with Aids after receiving a blood transfusion. Dexter becomes great friends with Eric, played by Renfro, and the two go on a journey to Louisianna to find a Cure for Aids, which they read about in the enquirer. This film will make you cry from beginning to end, so if you check it out, please have a box of Hankies handy. You'll definitely need them!!

Without A Clue '88- Hilarious take on Sherlock Holmes. In this Holmes(Michael Caine) is a total drunk, and Watson(Ben Kingsley)is the one who actually does the solving.

Holmes: It wasn't YOU he tried to kill!
Watson: Think man, think... Who was SUPPOSED to be in that room?
Holmes: That's right! You were!
Watson: Moriarty knows... I'm am the only match for his evil genius.
Holmes: You mean he's not trying to kill me?
Watson: Of course not. He knows you're an idiot.
Holmes: Oh, thank God.

-----------------------------

Holmes: What am I looking for?
Watson: Footprints.
Holmes: Ah.
[Holmes looks down]
Holmes: Have I found any yet?
Watson: Not yet.
Holmes: Well let me know when I do.

----------------------------

Sherlock Holmes: What are you doing?
Dr. Watson: Thinking.
Sherlock Holmes: Right. I'm going to think too.
[Long pause]
Sherlock Holmes: What shall we think about, Watson?

Clockwatchers is a 1997 indie movie about four office temps who deal with mistreatment for their coworkers and office thief. It's a pretty funny and realistic movie of temp life.

That's cool, it's good to know that others have seen this amazing film. I haven't watched it in a few years myself, but I've gotten choked up everytime I have seen it. Especially the last half hour. Forget being choked up, for the last 30 minutes I'm usually straight up crying. It is a great movie though, and I truly recommend it to everyone.

To browneyes106, since you liked The Cure, I HIGHLY recommend that you watch the first movie I mentioned, My Flesh and Blood!! It is also quite the tear jerker, and is a very inspiring, at times disturbing, and definitely a touching film. If you have Netflix or something, please look into seeing it, and if you don't mind, please let me know what you thought of it. Of course you don't have to if you don't want to, but I just think you'd really enjoy it. I actually sent the movie to Janice a few years ago, and she said it was the best documentary she had seen in years, and it's definitely the best one I've ever seen!! Everyone Iv'e recommended it to has absolutely loved it, so please keep that in mind. Thanks!! :)

I think Sleuth is one of the most intelligent films I've ever seen. Olivier and Caine worked together brilliantly. They were both nominated for Best Actor in that film. But who could forget all the other actors in it? I mean that guy who plays Inspector Doppler... what was his name again? ;)

I know Kenneth Branagh recently did a remake of it, with Michael Caine playing Olivier's role, but I haven't seen it yet. Sorry, Michael, but I doubt you can top the original.

One of my other favorite films of Olivier's is The Boys From Brazil. I think that was Olivier's last nomination for Best Actor, and considering he was old and sick at the time, he was still brilliant. The story is based on the Ira Levin novel (the guy who wrote Stepford Wives and Rosemary's Baby). Great, great, great movie. And a very young Steve Gutenberg appears at the beginning.

One movie nobody remembers is The Bride with Jennifer Beals and (believe it or not) Sting. It's a stylish remake of The Bride of Frankenstein from the 80s, but it's told more as a gothic romance than a horror film.

Sting turned in a surprisingly good performance, and actually managed to look good in period costume. Jennifer Beals... well, she's no Meryl Streep, but she still did a good job. It's really a shame that this one's forgotten, it deserved so much more credit than it got.

One of my favorite sci-fi sub-genres is the 'last man on earth' scenarios.

The Quiet Earth(1985, New Zealand), is one of the greatest examples of this.

"A scientist awakes to discover he is the only person left on Earth and it may be his experiment that caused every one to disappear."

Some of the best moments is seeing the lead character going crazy from loneliness. And it features in my opinion one of the greatest endings ever.

The Safety of Objects
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/7/71/Safety_of_objects.jpg

It's about four dysfunctional families in surburban neighborhood.
In a modest suburban neighborhood, Paul Gold (Joshua Jackson) lies in his bedroom in a coma, nursed by his mother, Esther (Glenn Close). Esther dutifully tends to Paul day and night, and in doing so has distanced herself from her husband Howard (Robert Klein) and teenage daughter Julie (Jessica Campbell). In an attempt to elicit her mother's attention, Julie enters Esther in a local radio contest in hopes of winning the brand new car that is up for grabs.

Meanwhile, after years of putting his job first, Jim Train (Dermot Mulroney) feels his family, especially his efficient wife Susan (Moira Kelly), no longer needs him. He tries to reconnect with his son Jake (Alex House), but pubescent Jake is preoccupied with romantic fantasies that revolve around his younger sister's twelve-inch plastic doll. Jim stops going to work, claiming that a bomb threat was called into his office, and convinces Esther and Julie to let him help them win the car.

The Trains' neighbor, Helen Christianson (Mary Kay Place), feeling older and less desirable, tries new products to keep her feeling young but succeeds only in alienating her husband, who loves her as she is.

Helen's good friend, Annette Jennings (Patricia Clarkson), in the midst of a messy divorce, struggles to financially provide for her two daughters. Sam (Kristen Stewart), the older tomboyish daughter, is desperate to go off to camp that summer. Sam's younger sister suffers from mental disabilities and requires special schooling, schooling that her selfish ex-husband refuses to pay for. Annette is also mourning the loss of Paul, with whom she was having a relationship. Randy (Timothy Olyphant), the neighborhood's landscaper, is also dealing with the loss of his younger brother.
