MILWAUKEE -- A 2-month-old Milwaukee baby boy was found dead Sunday morning in bed with his 18-year-old mother.
According to the medical examiner's report, the mother came home Saturday night after working two jobs and fed and changed the baby.
She then got in bed and put the baby next to her on a pillow even though there was a bassinette in the room, the report said. A 3-year-old child was also sleeping in the bed.
When the mother woke up at about 8:30 a.m., the baby was faced down and not breathing.
The medical examiner's report said there was no sign that drugs or alcohol were involved.
The case is still being investigated.

That is so sad. I know a lot of parents who have slept with their small babies and never had anything bad happen. When my kids were little I was far too paranoid that something like this would happen so I never did it. I would stay up half the night rocking them to sleep instead. So sad!

i think it was only recently that studies started showing that sleeping with a baby can be dangerous. very sad, and maybe a bit irresponsible on the mother's part, but i still feel bad for her. it's fairly common for parents to sleep with their babies with no tragic results, and she probably just didn't know something like this could happen. i definitely wouldn't group it in with leaving a baby in a hot car or with a plastic bag.

I agree with you. I feel bad for the mother too because I do think it was an accident and her life will never be the same again. I think there are a lot of overly tired mothers out there with screaming babies who do this so they can all get some rest...luckily most of the time everything is fine. It's sad it didn't turn out okay this time.:( Hopefully other parents will read about this and learn that it is dangerous and another child's life will be spared.

I agree with Sarah. Sounds to me as though the mother was just exhausted and probably just fell asleep by accident. It's tragic, but I wouldn't be wanting to charge the mother in this case. It was just a terrible accident. :(

i'm glad i'm not the only one who sees it that way. i don't have any real firsthand experience of course, but i do know that parenting is tricky, especially with infants. sometimes a small or seemingly harmless mistake could end up like this situation did, and with all the pressure that comes with being a parent, it can be hard to prevent making those mistakes. the idea of having kids kind of scares me for this reason. i'm afraid i'll take my eyes off of them for 30 seconds and then find them unconscious, then have the media and the rest of the country raking me over the coals over what a 'murderer' i am. i definitely don't defend all mothers who make careless mistakes that result in their children's deaths, but i really think this one should be excused. the poor girl must be torn apart.
