"Sexting" Shockingly Common Among Teens

While it may be shocking, the practice of "sexting" - sending nude pictures via text message - is not unusual, especially for high schoolers around the country.

This week, three teenage girls who allegedly sent nude or semi-nude cell phone pictures of themselves, and three male classmates in a western Pennsylvania high school who received them, are charged with child pornography.

In October a Texas eighth-grader spent the night in a juvenile detention center after his football coach found a nude picture on his cell phone that a fellow student sent him.

Roughly 20 percent of teens admit to participating in "sexting," according to a nationwide survey (pdf) by the National Campaign to Support Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy.

"This is a serious felony. They could be facing many years in prison," CBS News legal analyst Lisa Bloom said of the six teens in Pennsylvania.

But, Bloom added, "What are we going to do, lock up 20 percent of America's teens?"

Police in Greensburg, about 30 miles east of Pittsburgh, say the girls are 14 or 15 and the boys charged with receiving the photos are 16 or 17. None are being identified because most criminal cases in Pennsylvania juvenile courts are not public.

Police say they first learned about the pictures in October. They say a student had a phone turned on in class, a violation of school policy, which prompted an administrator to confiscate the phone and subsequently find the pictures, reports CBS station KDKA-TV.

This is indeed quite common. To charge the kids with child pornography though? When I think of child pornography, I think of Gary Glitter, not 15 year olds "sexting" each other.

lol they're doing it wrong. When you sext, don't include your face in the pictures.

And I actually used to have that same phone model as the one pictured in the article, only mine was the ****ty basic silver model.

But for the record, I'm not interested in doing something like that because, ya know, I'm not 14. I'm 23 now, ffs.

I had never heard of that until last week, and I have never done it. I do not see the appeal. Sexting my husband is not a turn on

its still a crime though, and once that type of photo gets out, no one can control where it goes or who looks at it - even if these are just 14 - 17 year olds sending these pics, they become the source of child pornography.

...its just another reason why i don't use cell phones.

If two adults(read adults over 18) want to do this and if this is there trip, then its their business, but why would kids want to do this??

No way would I do this. I'd have too many lawsuits on my hand after all the girls who would go blind after seeing me without my clothes.

The way it is now... maybe I should.

How people get famous today; a sex tape gets released to the public and they get their own reality show and movie deals.

Maybe that's what I need to do.

Yeah, I totally agree with you. I haven't texted in over a year, because I find it to be a waste of time, and money. I'd much rather hear a friends voice, then read a sentance or two that they've written. I didn't own a cell phone myself, and never even planned on it until about a year ago. It's one of those pre-paid ones, and the only reason I have it is because I would always vanish, and nobody would know where the heck I was, and so my roomate bought it for me to keep track of my whereabouts. I haven't even bought any minutes for it in 8 months. lol!

That's actually a really good point Allison. I'll bet internet and texting has really been a huge blessing for the deaf. You can tell me to f-off here, but have you found that you have more "hearing" friends than you would have without being able to text?
I know some deaf people feel odd around "regular" people (for lack of a better word) and I just wonder if this sort of thing has helped them with that?

Actually, yes, I think I have. I finally got my own phone back in 2006... when I first got it, I didn't have a whole lot of people to text so I was fine with just a Razr phone with no full keyboard. That's maybe quadrapled for me in the last year, so I'm glad to have a phone with a keyboard now... saves me from thumb strain! lol

I have a blackberry now, and there's an application available for it called i711 (http://www.i711.com/) that allows me to actually make [relay] phone calls from it. I couldn't do that before my blackberry... I had to go find a computer and make a relay call there, or find someone to make the phone call for me. It's VERY handy for when I need a ride home after work. :) So even tho I had my own phone before, I was still really limited with what I could do with it. I finally actually feel independent with it. :)

You know something, I'm not a parent, and I never text, but I will defend them here. My brother texts all the time on his cell phone. My parents are very loving and very in tune with our lives, but they have no way of knowing what my bro is typing into his cell phone at 11 o'clock at night.

Now I grant you, my brother is 18 and entitled to his privacy, but he's had his own cell phone since he was 15. We didn't "check up on him" to see what he was punching on those keys. I don't think that makes us bad guardians. Even with the best of parents, if they want to, kids will find a way.

That's so true for me too. I think I've sent maybe two text messages in my life.

And I wouldn't say it's generational either. I'm 26, not exactly ancient. My mom sends more texts than I do.

Well, you've got a point. One idea is that the parents could take away the kids' phones before bed, but wouldn't solve the whole problem. I guess you can tell I'm not a parent.

Charging them with Child porn is a little extreme, don't you think?

Look, Kids in Quebec as young as 10 years old watch soft-corn porn movies on TQS.

.

They're considering it because whether the kids realize it or not, in many cases they're actually feeding the child porn industry on the net. These pics start getting passed around at school as a joke or for bragging rights and then end up being posted somewhere where pervs go for pictures of young teens and kids.

No, it is child porn. It may just be intended for the boys/girls bf or gf to see but as Cathie said it most likely get passed around, and into the pervs hands.
