View Full Version : Prayers Please. My Stepdaughter has Cancer.

My husband's daughter was diagnosed with advanced malignant melanoma. She's 42 and has a four-year old daughter. I've known her since she was 16. Please say a prayer, or keep her in your thoughts. I just can't believe this. She needs a miracle.

I'll be praying for your stepdaughter and her daughter. To lose a parent that young is a traumatizing event. A kid I grew up with was orphaned at age 7. I wouldn't wish that on anyone. Just out of curiousity, how does she have advanced melanoma that young? She must have had a lot of exposure to the sun without lotion.

Nothing extreme. She was always tanned in the summer, but didn't overdo it, as far as I could see. She didn't have that overly tanned look, and wasn't going to tanning beds in the winter. She's a healthly girl, always works out, takes good care of herself. She's the last person I'd expect to get this. A suspicious mole on her back has turned into a nightmare.

That's very weird. Sound like it was just a freak thing that sadly happened to your stepdaughter. I've seen plenty of teens and even women in their 20s go to tanning beds and some look almost orange.
Wow, I'm very sorry to hear this. You are in my thoughts and prayers.

She's very fair with blonde hair and blue eyes, and I know that makes a person more susceptible to the disease. Perhaps she did get too much sun. She was always going on vacations, and she does love the beach. She was always tanned in the summer. I just didn't think she was overdoing it, but maybe she was. I read that a bad sunburn as a child can cause malignant melanoma as an adult. Last night, I was Googling until 4:30am, trying to find what I wanted, but I couldn't. It's bad. 'Stage 4, ulcerated'. That's the diagnosis.

Of course...it's always one you can't see very well. And who thinks to have someone else check their moles? :( Very sad. Has it spread too much?

I had a blistering burn when I was like 2. So I'm always worrying about my skin. I'm fairer than anyone I know; but I don't try to tan anymore. It's too pointless. I'd love to be tanner, but skin cancer scares me. :(

From all my reading last night, Stage 4 means it's metastized, usually to the liver, brain, lungs, and/or lymph nodes. :(

You sound like me - I have light hair, blue eyes and fair skin. In other words, I don't tan, I fry. But I don't really mind. I have no interest in those tanning lotions and have never had a desire to enter a tanning bed. I have had several bad sunburns in the past, and that worries me. Maybe I should talk with my doctor.

You guys are just the best. It's amazing the comfort a person can get from reading the kind words of others. My heart is very heavy, and seems to get worse with time. I'm sure it will level off. My husband doesn't know the full extent of it. He knows it's bad, but he keeps saying that she'll beat it. I've always felt that denial has its advantages. They're be plenty of time for tears. He talked to her, and she's feeling upbeat. She told him that they're going to try a new treatment. He couldn't explain it, so I'll have to talk to her myself. It's just a hard phonecall.
Laurie was always the daughter I never had. She's cried in my arms many times over bad breakups. She loves the theater, and Boston has a fantastic theater district, so I'd take her to plays all the time. She has a real zest for life. Ever since I met her, she was always trying something new. Got her brown belt or whatever, did some modeling (she's a knockout), went to school for graphic design.....aced the course, spent 10 grand, then decided it wasn't what she wanted to do for a living. She never felt any regret about it either. She loves to paint and possesses talent. She took a college art course. She taught aerobics for years. Was a bartender, restaurant manager, owns a car auction business with her boyfriend, never stayed too long at a job because she always felt the need to move on. She even took some sort of knitting or weaving course with her aunt. She's always taking courses and has a real thirst for learning. She's one of those professional students, always taking night courses. She's belongs to a book club group that meets once a month to discuss the assigned book. She and I went to the Boston Musuem of Fine Arts a few times, and she'd always get held up just staring, mesmerized, at a painting that was hundreds of years old. She has an eye for beauty.
When her daughter was born deaf, she didn't cry about it, she just mastered sign language and made sure her daughter has the latest treatment available. I remember the day she found out she was pregnant, she called me almost screaming with joy (that's Laurie), she told me that she had just called her father to tell him, and then said "Oops, I have to call and tell my mother. Please don't tell anyone I called you first." Quick to laugh, prone to moody outburts that are over before you realize it happened, and quick to apologize, she's still the 16-year old girl to me. This is starting to sound like a eulogy, so I'll stop. I just want to give some an idea of the type of woman who is Laurie.

J she sounds like she's lived life to the absolute fullest (thank God). She sounds strong and will be ready and at peace with it when the time comes. Yah, I don't want this sounding like a eulogy either, but reality is what it is unfortunately. If anything, I think it's a huge blessing when we've been given time to "clean up loose ends" to really appreciate everything and everyone who was in it.
Is she a Pisces at all? I figured this was the one who wore your dress. I know exactly the one you mean and know you've always felt very close with her and proud.

Janice,
You, and your husband (Lou), Laurie and Gianna are in my prayers and in my thoughts. I pray that a miracle, because Laurie sounds like a wonderful human being (and Gianna is absolutely gorgeous; what an Angel). You are truly blessed to have such an amazing daughter-in-law, and I wish, hope, pray (everyday and night) that she will end up being strong and healthy. I also pray for strength for your entire family and loved ones.
Remember, you have someone in San Diego that really cares.

To everyone else, thanks so much, especially for the compliments for my granddaughter Gianna. Yep, it's true, they call me Nana. I guess there's a chance that Laurie's cancer could be a stage 3, and not a stage 4. She's seeing her doctor on Friday, and we should know then.
Stage 3 is bad, but not as fatal as stage 4. To put it in perspective, patients with stage 4 have a 9 to 15% chance of survival. Patients with stage 3 have a 25 to 60% chance. Grim prognosis, but with stage 3, at least there's hope.

Well, most of her test results are in and....drumroll please... :drummer:
IT'S NOT AS BAD AS WE THOUGHT!!
They haven't staged it yet, but the oncologist (cancer doctor) told Laurie that it's definitely not a stage 4, and in fact, it's not even a stage 3!! There is lymph node involvement, which will have to be removed. He told her that it may be an early 2. We'll know that within the week. I almost had a heart attack when I got the news. I woke up to a phone message from her. I'm kind of confused, and I don't know where the stage 4 came from. I asked her, and she said the doctor told her last week that from all early indications, that it was looking like a stage 4. I can't believe that a doctor would even utter the words "stage 4" without being absolutely positive. Then again, when my sister was 16, her doctor told my parents that it looked like she had MS, when it turned out to be a bad case of the flu.
So my husband and I are thrilled, but cautiously so. I couldn't stop crying. Lou had to hold me in one place as I was going almost in circles just crying and ranting. Odd reaction to good news, but I've been in hell for the past nine days, and it was like a dam breaking. Laurie asked the doctor if she was going to die. He told her that eventually she would, but not likely from malignant melanoma. Little doctor humor there. He told her that she's got quite a battle on her hands, but given her positive outlook and the tremendous shape she's in, that he's "very optimistic".
Thank you to everyone who prayed. The prayers worked! Thank you for all the kind words on this thread as well as the private PMs and e-mails. I'll NEVER forget this. Those who saw this thread and ignored it can kiss my ass, you bitter nasty creeps. Just had to get that off my chest. Also, as a side note, my husband's family has been semi-estranged for reasons I won't bore anyone with, yet the family huddled together these past nine days. Fences were mended. When something this serious comes along, you can't even remember why you were mad at a person. The Lord DOES work in mysterious ways. Makes me wonder.
I love you guys. Laurie lives! She lives! Gianna has a mother to drive crazy, who will fix up her dorm room, go shopping with for her wedding dress, to hold her first baby, Laurie's first grandchild, it goes on and on. I can't imagine growing up without my mother. I'm starting to slobber again, so I'll mercifully end this.

Thank you everyone! Your prayers and kind word mean the world to me. I think in the excitement of hearing that Laurie's cancer isn't advanced, I've lost sight of the fact that she still has cancer. She has an uphill battle ahead of her. She has to have all sorts of injections and lymph node surgery. Whether or not she needs chemo or radiation remains to be seen. Still, I'm sleeping much better these nights. I thought I was losing my mind for that week. I honestly think that was the best news I've ever received in my entire life. :)

This is excellent news! Thank God this prayer was answered!!!
That is unbelievable that a doctor would just throw around "stage 4" like that without really knowing. But the main thing is that he was wrong! This is something that can be cured when caught early so it changes the whole battle for her! I know she has so much strength with you and Lou behind her. And what better motivation than that beautiful little girl!
I'm sorry I didn't see this great news earlier J - I just haven't been on that much the past few days (I've had the flu and terrible back pains). I'll email you privately.

You guys are just so sweet. I appreciate everyone's kind words and prayers. Dear God, I had her dead and buried. One night I actually saw my husband going through a file in our desk, and he took out the deed to some cemetery plots. They were given to us years ago by Lou's mother. His family has a huge family plot. I told him to put it away, as it will jinx things. He was just cracking up, I think. When he got the message she left us on the phone that things are "pretty good", the look on his face was unreal. After 26 years with a man, you'd think I'd seen it all, but this was really something. His eyes got so wide, his jaw dropped, then we both started hugging and crying. I'll never ever forget that.

She's doing fantastic. Thank you so much for remembering. :) She had to undergo round of chemo, but it wasn't for a long time. They caught her cancer in time, thank God. At first, we had misinformation, and it looked worse than it was. She has to be watched closely for a few years, and probably forever really. The importance of early detection can't be overstated.
