Can you ever recall being really sad when you found out one of your favorite shows was getting cancelled?

I'll admit that I found out when I heard the fate of "Step By Step," I cried.

I'm not making that up.

You have to consider that I not only loved the show a lot, but how much I adored Angela Watson.

I can't think of any show that actually made me cry when it was canceled although I probably would've squalled my fool head off if I'd been alive during Twilight Zone's original run but I was born 4 months after the last episode aired in 1964.

I recall I was pretty upset when I learned that CBS had canncelled "WKRP IN CINCINATI".

Also in the early 80s when NBC canncelled "BRET MAVERICK".

The show Brooklyn Bridge. I was sad when it was cancelled, but then it was understandable, there were only a limited number of scenarios that could be presented, and the kids in the show couldn't stay kids forever. A good thing is that it exited while it was at the top of its game.

Same creators, I believe, that did Family Ties, another quality show--which tells you right there something about it.

Yeah, I probably was too. Don't really remember, but I was obsessed with that show in my teen years.

"Touched by An Angel" - yeah, I know it had a 9 year run, but I sobbed for days when it got cancelled.

"Keen Eddie" - I've never forgiven FOX for cancelling this brilliant show!

"The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet" - I wasn't even born yet, but had I been alive and old enough to care, I would've been sad. :(

"American Dreams" - NBC got the bright idea to move this show to Wednesday nights and it lost viewers, thus getting cancelled. Although slow-moving, this show was excellent.

"Back to You" - I don't think FOX gave this enough time. (FOX is already on my short list - see "Keen Eddie" mention above.) I've been watching Kelsey Grammar since the early 80's, so for him to NOT have a TV show, is sad. Thank God for "Frasier" reruns.

The biggest one for me was Freaks and Geeks. I still remember watching the last few minutes of the last episode on NBC thinking, wow, this is it. That's all. Really sad. A few other ones were Undeclared, Firefly, Misfits of Science, Whiz Kids and ALF.

Nowadays I'm more likely to be upset when shows get cancelled after 1 season or less when they don't give them a chance to find their audience. Back To You and Pushing Daisies are killed yet these stupid mindless reality shows just keep coming. (Mamma's Boys???? Wife Swap???... The Nanny one...and how many more The Bachelor seasons aurghhh!!!) come on stop cancelling potentially sucessful shows for trash! Remember when Cheers was almost cancelled its first season?

I didn't cry when ELR said goodbye, but it felt like a part of me died. That was always like mom and me time on Monday nights. Good times.

I am usually not a fan of this show but I got teary eyed during the Friends three hour finale.

The ones I was truely stunned by were:

Perfect Strangers - the way Balki and Larry were realizing they were going to be daddies said it all.

Night Court - both a sad and simultaneously a dissapointing finale

Green Hornet, The - I would've loved to see another season of this show, but ABC canned it b/c it was oversahdowed by Batman's popularity

Just the Ten of Us

Barney Miller - When everyone left out of the Squad Room, that said it all

Cheers

SOF first they messed with it by replacing Real Andrews and Mark Sheppard with Dennis Rodman and David Eigenberg in the second season and ruined it by trying to make it hip and throwing in random guest stars which led to its cancellation in 1998 because it lost so many fans by its change direction plus the fact that STAR64 ( I lived in Ohio at time this show ran ) kept preempting it for every little thing didn't exactly help matters either.

Mine are:

Gilmore Girls

And the one that really upset me...

KNOTS LANDING after 14 seasons, in which the show just got better and better with every episode (never jumped the shark).

I really wanted to be sad when they cancelled Designing Women as well, however they killed this show prematurely when they lost Delta Burke and Jean Smart. I was sad to see the good years go.

Same for Golden Girls - I think the show had run it's course and it was time to say adieu before the last season, which became a parody of it's best years.

I was sad to see Friends go off the air in 2004. All the other shows I have followed I only followed through reruns so never really experienced that thing. Although I'm sure Fresh Prince would have upset me in that there were only 6 seasons and they ended it in a very good/emotional way.

as ER comes to an end, I would have to say it and also the two other shows that were part of Must See TV ...FRIENDS and Will and Grace. Joey 's cancellation as well as Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip and Dirt. were also too early.

I'm With Her

Absolutely. Teri Polo never got the respect she deserved as an actress on ABC. Two REALLY terrific shows she was involved in got cancelled one right after the other, in I'm With Her and SportsNight (in reverse order, but you get the idea.)

I finished all of "Hardcastle and McCormick" on DVD, and I wish that it didn't end in 1986. I wish that it had continued at least for one more season to 1987.

King of the Hill - I agree wholeheartedly on that one. One side of the coin says Mike Judge and crew were right to wrap it up, but at the same time it also means that part of FOX's Sunday Night Animation Domination line-up gets a little crippled as well, which is sad.

Others:

Hill Street Blues - If only Daniel Travanti stayed w/ the show for one more season.

Mannix - This was was pounding hard in the Top 10 or Top 20 by its 8th season and the last ep. featured the late John Ritter who was killed (not by Mainnix himself) but one of the bad guys, which made it even more sad to see it go. This show would've even had a 9th season had CBS and Paramount settled their tensions to give this a 9th season. Intersting how once CBS cancelled this show, any success Paramount would try to have airing any of their shows on CBS would be short-lived for many years to come (up until CBS snatched JAG from NBC).

ALF - Good call! That was just a horrible way for this show to bow like that.

Farscape

Without a doubt the most egregious example of a network promising a continuation and then canceling a show. Sci-fi Channel lost my viewership at this point, and has NEVER regained it. Farscape was their HIGHEST RATED SHOW, but because they didn't own ENOUGH of it, they cancelled it. Never mind that they were making money on it, they decided they weren't making ENOUGH money on it. Jerks.

I wouldn't say saddened but sucks of what happened to them.

Married with Children
Newsradio

The two above I didn't mind for them to be canceled but I think both of them deserve closure in a big way-for themselves and for the fans.

Adventures of Brisco County Jr.-could at least last for another year or two
Werewolf-the series in the late 80's or early 90's-at least one more year

I thought it went off the air mainly because Soap's main sponsor quit on them (among other things like you just mentioned).

My Sister Sam (1986-88; CBS) - Well on one side of the coin, it was good that CBS canned it before we would learn of Rebecca Schaffer's untimely death (remember how NBC horribly toyed w/ Chico and the Man after Freddie Prinze died and how years later ABC did the same thing w/ Eight Simple Rules when John Ritter?) on the other side of the coin, CBS made the fatal mistake w/ this show of moving it from Mondays to Thursdays by putting it up against NBC's powerhouse lineup of shows.

My Two Dads (1987-90; NBC) - This show like My Sister Sam started their 1st seasons in the Top 25 on the Nielsens. But in the case of this show, NBC made the mistake of waiting until mid-season to start S2 and then like My Sister Sam, this show too was hit by a timeslot change.

That controversy had pretty much died down by the end of the first season. It was cancelled because ABC didn't like its falling ratings, though according to some they were still respectable.
