Which "Foreign Man" do you prefer - Latka or Balki?

Who did you like better: Latka, the crackerjack mechanic from Taxi, or Balki, the Myposian shepherd from Perfect Strangers?

While I liked both characters I found Balki to be more upbeat,more innocent, and more endearing. So I Vote for Balki! (now we are so happy we do the dance of joy!!!)

I agree with you. I love Andy Kaufman. One of the great treasures in the Saturday Night Live DVDs is getting to see Andy's appearances.

I love both "Taxi" and "Perfect Strangers", but Latka is the ultimate Foreign Man character in my opinion.

Balki always struck me as someone I'd love to have as a best friend, someone who would always be there with a kind word/hug. I like Taxi, but I just never warmed up to Latka for some reason. I just liked the other characters more than him.

I'll take Antonio over those two any day. Balki was OK (Haven't watched PS in many years.) but I didn't find Latka very funny at all, especially once Simka came along.

I was that way when I first started watching "Monk." Heck, Tony Shalhoub's involvement with the show is the reason I started watching, lol. But now when I watch "Monk" I no longer think of Antonio. In fact, now when I watch "Wings", I think of Monk.

At least the character of Balki grew and changed over the course of the series. Latka didn't grow or change much at all, even when he got married.

A good reason for this may be that Andy Kaufman had it written in his contract that he would only appear in 7 out of every 13 episodes. Plus, Latka didn't have an awesome sidekick like Balki did in Larry! (And no, I don't count Simka, as much as I love Carol Kane.)

Very good points Monika. I think it also helped that Balki was one of the lead characters on "Perfect Strangers" whereas Latka was never more than a supporting character on "Taxi".
