We are about a month away from St. Patty's Day.
My dear SO friend Ramona has Irish heritage and background.
When you think of this annual holiday, what do you think of?
I may not be Irish, but St. Patrick's Day is a day I look forward to for a couple of reasons:
1. Chicago dyes its river green

2. GREEN COOKIES!

3. McDonald's Shamrock Shake

4. Clovers (I am superstitous and believe in four-leaf versions bringing good luck!)

I think of college aged idiots...hell, any aged idiots, finding an excuse to go out and get smashed. Other than that, it is of no significance to me. I'm not Irish and I really do not care about it.

Same. So many people literally think it is all about drinking.

Green is my least favorite color so that should tell you how I feel about St Patrick's (I refuse to call it Patty's) day.

We're not Irish but when I was a kid my mom would make shamrock shaped sugar cookies and ice them with green icing.

If it's green and doesn't have a photo of long-dead President or other historical figure (i.e., Hamilton, Franklin, etc...) then you can have it.

I'm half Irish. We don't really "celebrate" St. Patrick's Day. I HATE corn beef and cabbage so we definitely don't do that. We do get Irish soda bread; that I do like.
When it comes down to it for me, this is what St. Patrick's Day is for me:

Funny, in Ireland, St. Patrick's day is the one day you DON'T drink . It's mostly about going to mass and being with your family. People in america use it as an excuse to get hammered.

That's probably because they drink all of the time so it's considered something "special" to not drink on a certain day.

I'm not Irish by any stretch of the imagination, I HATE corned beef and cabbage, and I don't drink beer. But, what I DO think of when I think of St. Patrick's Day is another Chicago tradition - the South Side Irish Parade - a slightly smaller (but nonetheless every bit as colorful and rowdy) version of the big St. Patrick's parade downtown. Just watching the crowds yell and get drunk in front of all the Irish-style pubs between 95th and 111th & South Western Avenue is an event in and of itself!

One of the only TV shows to celebrate St. Patrick's Day was Ryan's Hope (1975-89) - and they did it every year!! Makes sense because the main family was Irish and owned a bar. They always sang "Danny Boy" at every family gathering.

Another TV show that did St. Patrick's Day up big was "According to Jim". It seems on St.Patrick's Day Jim would turn into "the green man" and do all manner of alcohol fueled stunts that would appear in the newspaper the next day.

Green clothes and decorations, New York City, and specifically the section of Brooklyn, New York (Sunset Park near Bay Ridge), probably Brooklyn's largest Irish neighborhood in those days (1950's and '60s) Most of my friends were 2nd and 3rd generation Irish (I'm Italian), but we'd all celebrate. Everyone there, it seemed wore green on St. Patrick's Day, Irish or not. The best part of course, is that the parochial school we went to actually had the day off for St. Patrick's Day! Is that cool, or what?!
My brother was in the school's cadet drum and bugle corps and they got to march in the St. Patrick's Day parade in Manhattan one year (around 1958 or 59)
The neighbors had names like Flynn, Dugan, O'Hara, Quinn, Connors, etc. Chuck Connors of Rifleman fame grew up the next block over from us and played baseball with my dad. Connors' actual name was Kevin, not Chuck.
St. Patrick's Day then, has many good memories and associations with me. I still wear green on that day, and this Italian boy still has corned beef and cabbage on or around that day every year!
It's now a well-known expression, but we'd always say, "Everyone's Irish on St. Patrick's Day!"

leprechauns and corned beef and cabbage is what i think of. we weren't irish but my mom would always make us wear something with green in it on the day and she'd make corn beef and cabbage w/ green jello or pistachio pudding for dessert. and my dad would always bring her home green carnations.

Hmmmm. That's a toughie. We really don't celebrate it much because no one in my family is Irish. But, I think of shamrocks, leprechauns, and some of my good-natured Irish buddies! I may have a pint for them!:D
