View Full Version : Your Favorite Sitcom Couples That DIDN'T End Up Together

Valentine’s Day is over! So now let’s mention our favorite sitcom couples that did NOT end up together.

My list:
1. Dave Nelson and Lisa Miller (NewsRadio) - They had an on-again-off-again relationship since the first episode. However, in the 4th season they break up. Rather than get back together again, Lisa marries Johnny Johnson in the 5th season. A move the fans hate!

2. Sam Malone and Diane Chambers (Cheers) - The original on-again-off-again couple, they were almost married in season five. Instead of tying the knot, Diane leaves to write a book. Six years later, on the series finale, she returns and they almost get married, but once again, don’t.

3. Paige Clark and Spence Kovac (Ellen) - In the third season (Spence’s first), the two can’t stand each other. Of course, it’s a sitcom and the couple soon found themselves attracted to one another. They dated for all of season four and most of season five. But alas, they ended their relationship for reasons so dull, I honestly forget.

4. A.C. Slater and Jessie Spano (Saved by the Bell) - After losing Kelly to Zack, Slater focuses on getting Jessie. They date for a while, but in their senior year break up. And in college, Slater has found a new girlfriend - Alex.

5. Kevin Arnold and Winnie Cooper (The Wonder Years) - The series originally followed Kevin and his first love, Winnie. They dated for a while. However, in the series finale, we learn that they don’t end up together.

6. Brian Hackett and Alex Lambert (Wings) - In the fourth season Joe and Brian fight over Alex. During the fifth season Brian and Alex have a relationship. Everything looks good, even with the couple moving in together, but by the end of the fifth season, the two break up. Alex makes one last appearance in the sixth season, has a fling with Brian and decides she’d rather be friends with him.

7. Steve Rhoades and Marcy Rhoades (Married…with Children) - Steve and Marcy Rhoades were a very happy newlywed couple who moved next door to the Bundys. By the fourth season, Steve was ready to go, and left Marcy to become a forest ranger. She bounced back the next season when she woke up married to Jefferson.

8. Michael Kelso and Jackie Burkhart (That ’70s Show) - When the series started, Kelso and Jackie were a couple. That’s the only reason she joined the group and eventually became Donna’s best friend. They broke up, due to his cheating, but got back together. They broke up again, and while she dated Hyde, he had a few girlfriends, even becoming a dad. In his final regular episode, Kelso proposes to Jackie. She rejects him, and he moves to Chicago.

9. Steven Hyde and Jackie Burkhart (That ’70s Show) - After dating Kelso for a while, Jackie found herself with Hyde. They had a relationship that the fans seemed to like. However, it was complicated since they are pretty different people. Their relationship ended when (in the last season) Hyde came back married to a stripper.

10. Bridget, Kerry Hennessy and Kyle (8 Simple Rules) - First Bridget dated Kyle, something that annoyed her father, Paul. Halfway through the first season, they broke up and Kerry seemed to like him. However, early in the third (and last) season, Kerry and Kyle broke up as well.

Frasier and Claire (Frasier)
Alex and Ellen (Family Ties)
Kevin and Winnie (The Wonder Years)
Faith and Larry (Hope & Faith)
Andy and Bailey (WKRP)
Dauber and Kelly (Coach)
Sam and Diane (Cheers)

Frasier and Lilith (Cheers/Frasier)

Dave and Lisa (NewsRadio)

Antonio and Casey (Wings)- I know they were never a couple, but they should have been one.

Margaret and Frank (MASH)

Principal Skinner and Ms. Krabappel (The Simpsons)

JD and Elliot (Scrubs)- Of course, they could end up back together in the finale.

LOL - those 2 belonged together. They should have dated for awhile longer on the shows. It was like 2 episodes and done.

I almost like it better how Kevin and Winnie on TWY didn't end up together. While their relationship was complicated, and special, I never pictured them together in the end for some reason.

Alex and Ellen - ABSOLUTELY!! I loved them - and at least their real life story turned out to be a lot happier.

Do Daisy and Enos (Dukes of Hazzard) count, even though it wasn't technically a sitcom? Well, maybe it was, even though it was an hour-long adventure show. YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEHAAA!!

My List:

1. Mike And Gloria Stivic- While they were married for 8 years they broke up and got divorced. They were perfect for each other.

2. Lionel and Jenny Jefferson- They also were married but then separated and got divorced, they too were perfect for each other.

3. Frasier and Diane- They were a better match than she and Sam.

Here are my choices:

Mallory and Skippy-Family Ties I really wanted Mallory and Skippy together. I thought they made a cute couple and Skippy really, truly cared about Mallory. I think they would have been happy together.

Jack and Janet-Three's Company I always wanted Jacke and Janet together. They were great friends and were always there for each other. She was the one person he could count on and vice-versa. I always thought they were so cute together. They would have made a great couple.

1. Lisa Turtle & Zack Morris from Saved By The Bell-I LOOOOVED them as a couple, they were so gorgeous together! so hawt! It kills me that they only had a one episode relationship in the "Bayside Triangle"! They had great chemistry in previous episodes such as "Operation Zack", "Lisa's Card", "Mystery Weekend". In real life they had better chemistry than all of the other cast members, from ('89-92, the longest and most serious teen relationship) I just wish that i could have seen more of their relationship on-screen. What kills me is that Zack & lisa were looking like that they could have been a long lasting couple by the end of the episode, even walking off holding hands, but by the next one, it was like nothing even happened! The producers dropped the storyline! i'm still pissed! The brief Zack & Lisa romance had me more excited then Zack & Kelly's relationship ever did on the entire run of the show. Lisa should have been Mrs. Zack Morris! Zack & Kelly was HIGHLY over-rated! ugh.....

Zack & Lisa>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Zack & Kelly!

2. Kelly & Screech from Saved By The Bell- in the episode, "Beauty and the Screech", this is another romance that only lasted for one episode that i desperately wanted to see more of. You can tell that Kelly really liked Screech, she accepted him just the way he was, (the only girl who didn't treat him like dog doo). It added some depth to her character, showing that even the most popular cheerleader in school doesn't have to be shallow and superficial when it comes to potential love. She wasn't ashamed to let it be known that she was SPRUNG off of him either. (Kelly shown more interest towards Screech in this episode, than she ever did towards Zack throughout the whole run of the entire show!!) I was ROLLIN when Zack and Slater was fightin over her, i kept screaming at the t.v. that "She didn't want neither of you CLOWNS, she wants Screech!" LOL, I loved the part when Kelly had that sparkle in her eye, that glaze in her look, describing Screech as intelligent, what a great guy he is , and what a great personality he has, she couldn't even THINK straight, she even had on mis-matched clothes, that's how love-sick she was over Screech! (SHE NEVER SHOWN THIS MUCH DESIRE TOWARDS ZACK! EVER!! LOL) I just wished that Screech would wake the eff up and get over Lisa and realize that he has an attractive, sweet, the most POPULAR girl interested in him, was he crazy?? Who cares if you two don't have much in common at the beginning?? that's the BEAUTY of a relationship! Don't opposites attract anyway?? That's where it becomes interesting and you actually learn something new about each other as it progresses! Him and Lisa had absolutely NOTHING in common either but that didn't stop him from chasing after her every chance he got!! When the potential romance ended, you can tell that Kelly was visibly upset, and she still liked him even after that! (Don't believe me, catch lil hints in other episodes) I don't think that her defending him when others would put him down and being overly nice to him was because of her sweet nature, she still liked him!

Kelly & Screech>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Kelly & Zack!

3. Slater & Theresa Alvarez from Saved By The Bell (The College Years)-In the episode, "Slater's War", Theresa was the beautiful student activist that lead Slater to embrace his Hispanic heritage. I thought that she could have served more purpose as his girlfriend then his past ones! She was the only one to discover his true identity. She made him delve deep within himself to find out who he really was. It's a shame that we never seen her anymore past that one episode.

Slater & Theresa>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Slater & Anybody else!

I guess they just wanted the show to have a "happy" ending, as Steve had lusted for Laura since kindergarten. But unfortunately, Laura did nothing to deserve Steve's feelings for her. And poor Myra was screwed big time.

I also wished that Dr. Cox & Carla from Scrubs ended up together. I ship these two because i like their chemistry together. No offense to Turk but Carla with Dr. Cox would make a more interesting couple. Plus Their relationship would have more depth in my opinion. Correct me if im wrong but didn't they know each other longer than they knew the others? They even went on a date/s. Dr. Cox was always crazy about Carla and she was the only woman who can keep him in check/put him in submission when need be!

Dr. Cox & Carla was there for each other when there was some sort of crisis. I like their friendshp. A part of me wished that they had a hot steamy affair behind Turk and Jordan's back! hahaha........

who's with me??? Am i the only one who feels this way??

Great topic!

I agree with Mike and Gloria Stivic. I loved them as a couple and it was a total blasphemy that the producers made them break up just for the sake of a short lived and ill-conceived sitcom. They deserved a much happier ending, together.

I'd also add some choices that weren't officially "couples" but were good friends that I always wished would have gotten together.

1) Alex and Elaine from Taxi
2) Johnny and Bailey from WKRP.
3) And I know this might seem odd, but I always thought that Frasier and Daphne would have made a better couple than she and Niles; their chemistry seemed stronger. Niles' attraction to her always seemed alternately creepy and clownish.

Also Greg and Paige from Knots Landing. Those two were a hoot together and the actors had great chemistry.

^ I agree with Alex and Elaine. That kiss they shared in season 2 was HOT. Plus, their on-screen chemistry spilled off-screen (at least for a while) as Judd Hirsch and Marilu Henner had a relationship while the show was still on the air.

on Friends, Joey and Rachel, i loved them together---much more than Ross and Rachel!

On Growing Pains, Mike and Julie---it is such a shame how Julie McCoullagh was written out of the show! (i think her name was Julie McCoullagh)...

On SBTB, Zack and Stacey Carousi! i LOVED them together! they were AWESOME! much better than Zack and Kelly!

I also thought it was unfair and Julie didn't deserve be fired the way they did. She was hired to act on a TV show. I don't think her past should have had anything to do with her job on the show. But finding out that Kirk forced the producers axe Julie made me realize that if she remained on the show Kirk would probably thrown fits about their scenes and their on screen relationship might have looked forced in a way.

Dwayne and Denise of "A Different World". I liked them together. She dropped out of college, went to Africa and then when Dwayne tried to hook up with her again, he found out that she was married.

Tommy and Pam of "Martin". I am dissappointed that they broke up in season four of the show.

Lance and Charmaine of "The Cosby Show" and "A Different World". They dated on Cosby and were a couple visiting the College on ADW. When Charmaine got accepted and started a long distance relationship with Lance, he broke up with her for someone else.

Can't believe I never added my two cents to this thread. I know my picks have been mentioned, but I'll say them anyway. LOL

Frasier/Roz - I haven't seen all the eps yet, but I know nothing happens between them. They seem to have a really easy friendship, and I think that's how these things start most of the time!
Brian/Casey (Wings) - They did have an on-again/off-again thing for awhile, but at the end of the series it wasn't clear what was going to happen between them.
Alex/Elaine (Taxi) - Take what I said about Frasier/Roz's friendship and repeat it here, LOL. Same story.
Mary Jo/JD (Designing Women) - I thought they were a great couple, and I know their breakup came about b/c of real-life issues, but I wish things had worked out differently.

I can't really think of too many more. If I do come up w/ any later, I'll post back. :)
