Universal Pictures is sweet on "Candy Land."
Studio has set Etan Cohen to write and Kevin Lima to direct a live-action feature based on the enduring Hasbro board game.
Project is the first film to emerge from the deal U made last February with Hasbro, whose properties are the basis for the summer tentpole films "G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra" and "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen."
The tyke-friendly board game isn't as obvious an inspiration for a movie project as those other Hasbro brands, but the studio has tapped talent adept at comedy and family fare.
Lima most recently directed the Amy Adams starrer "Enchanted" after helming the animated features "Tarzan" and "102 Dalmatians." Cohen's recent script work includes "Tropic Thunder" and "Madagascar 2," and he most recently rewrote "The Fiance," the Burr Steers-directed romantic comedy that will star Anne Hathaway.
Producer is Hasbro CEO Brian Goldner. Christopher Chase will be executive producer.

There was a movie called "Mouse Trap" with Nathan Lane and Lee Evans, but it was more of a Home Alone type comedy, but not based on the game.

OK, thanks, Jude. Didn't they do a Dungeons & Dragons movie, or was it just a TV show?

Dungeons & Dragons came out in 2000 with Thora Birch and Jeremy Irons. The movie is pretty much crap.
In 2005, they made a tv movie unrelated to the first one Dungeons & Dragons 2: Wrath of the Dragon God.
The Sci-Fi channel had rumors that they were going to do a tv series based on the second film but nothing ever happened.

The feature film Jumanji was based upon a children's animated storybook.
Around the release of the film, MB made a board game inspired by the one used in the movie.
Jumanji is a real board game, but the game was made up for the story.
Also to note, the film Zathura was inspired by another book by the Jumanji author. This one was space themed. I don't know if they made a real Zathura game.

There was also an animated series (in the 80's I think) that was based on the game. It was pretty good from what I remember, and it followed the concepts of the game more than that God awful movie.

If this one's a hit, we're going to be hit with a whole lot more games like Monopoly, Battleship, Stratego, Risk, etc..

As long as they don't type cast Johnny Depp in the film and try to make it dark, I'll be going to see this movie because I used to play the board game a lot as a kid. I keep imagining that the movie will be an awful lot like LazyTown, complete with Happy Hardcore dance music.
