Simon Cowell has claimed that Mariah Carey is no longer the singer she used to be.
The music mogul said Carey was wrong to try her hand at different styles of music and should concentrate on recording love songs.
"To me, the greatest singer is Mariah Carey, but she's lost it," he told Live magazine.
"She needs to go back to singing ballads. You have to stick with doing what you do best. Be honest. Know yourself."
Cowell added that he believes protégé Leona Lewis could "top" Carey's success in the future.

This coming from the guy who thought he had bragging rights for "outselling" Bruce Springsteen or some nonsense. He isn't even worthy of mentioning their names, much less making those comments.

sounds like sour grapes to me. as if simon can hit high notes the same way as mariah. i'd like to see him sing but he probably has a crap voice.

Are you kidding me? He does have a crap singing voice. He had a brief singing career as a teenager back in England. It didn't last long and so that's how he landed that American Idol job in the first place.

When he didn't make it as a singer, he became a record company exec and the rest is history. Looks like he made the right career move.

With all due to respect, Mariah has somewhat lost it. Her performance on American Idol last season was beyond terrible as have the majority of her recent live performances, with the exception of last week's AMA's, which IMO was pretty good.
Down to erratic behavior, singles choices, poor participation in the promotion of her songs and album (E=MC2.) It's not a coincidence that Christina Aguilera was named by Rolling Stone as #58 in the industry's greatest voices while Mariah was far below.

 Because Rolling Stone is definitely the end-all source when it comes to things like this.

Yeah really, Rolling Stone... give me a break. Not even Mariah Carey can have a flawless performance everytime. Come on, I know she is amazing and great but she is still human. Cut the woman some slack. Of course anyone who says she has lost it is either just a hater or is clealy trying to get their name in print.

By 2000 Mariah's voice had lost much of its strength and power, only after a decade of being in the business. I thought the same thing was going to happen to Christina but luckily her voice is as good as it has ever been. Flawless. That alone proves that not only is Christina a better singer but a better performer as well.

Mariah's voice hasn't lost anything. It may seem like it on the type of songs she sings now, but she can sing her past songs just as well as she ever could. I had my doubts, but she showed me otherwise during her 2006 tour. And    at Christina being a better singer. She can keep dreaming.

I personally have always found Christina overrated. I like a couple of her songs, but that's it.

CAN MC STILL HIT THOSE HIGH NOTES?
What's with Mariah Carey and the high notes? Can she still hit them like she did during her "Emotions" days? BTW, love your podcast here in South Africa.
—Caleb
Apparently, she can still sing them. Earlier this month a New Yorker reporter got an earful of a live Mariah Carey set, including, per the resulting article, "the high notes of 'Hero.' "
