Kanye West says he's 'voice of this generation'

Kanye West is to music what Michael Jordan was to basketball — at least that's what West thinks, in his humble estimation.

"I realize that my place and position in history is that I will go down as the voice of this generation, of this decade, I will be the loudest voice," he said in an interview on Wednesday. "It's me settling into that position of just really accepting that it's one thing to say you want to do it and it's another thing to really end up being like Michael Jordan."

The Grammy-winning rapper-producer said Justin Timberlake had a chance to be music's MVP, but hasn't put out enough material. (Timberlake's last album was in 2006, while West released a CD last year and is releasing his latest — "808s and Heartbreak" — on Nov. 24.)

"There were people who had the potential to do it but they went on vacation, so when Justin went on vacation I made albums," he said. "And it just came out to be that."

West, 31, said life has been difficult since his mother's death. Donda West died last November after having plastic surgery.
"I'm just going through balancing that. And I always used to have that support system, you know. My mom would be there; no matter what, she was there before everything," he said. "We were together for like 30 years. And you know now when I'm on that stage and I look out and I say, 'What am I going to do with the rest of my life?' Like when does a real life start?' Because I have sacrificed real life to be a celebrity and to give this art to people, which is great. It is great that I was able to do that, I'm not trying to shun that in any way, but it's definitely a Catch-22 and it's bittersweet."

lmao he's so psychotic. my generation may be the "spoiled" generation, but we're not all cocky and arrogant...so there's no way he is our voice.

why do so many rappers think they're the king of the world? why any of them get any respect as "MUSICIANS" is beyond me. anyone can speak rapidly over background music they stole from another artist.

but given how ****ty this generation is, someone as unproductive as him could very well be a candidate for our "voice".

I wish he would keep his "voice" quiet when it comes to trashing other performers. Recently he went on another tirade about the artists up for MTV Awards, in both Europe and the U.S. Apparently, no one is good enough to win anything. Except him of course.

He must be so loved by his fellow artists.

I think everybody just hates rap but me
I think rap's cool, and I even can't help but admit that I like several of Kanye's songs, but damn...he's one cocky mofo and that makes him so UNlikeable.

That's true JT. I don't think he's cocky. I think he cries over some stupid **** a lotta times but there's a very thin line between confidence or somebody being themselves and people calling them cocky, arrogant and a$$holes.....I don't know..everybody has their opinions of other people though.

It's true, we all have our opinions. My opinion is that Kanye's crying over stupid stuff makes him cocky, not confident.

other sonic bodily emission.

I mean, I like Kanye's songs and all, but to say he's the voice of a generation...especially to self-proclaim yourself as the voice of a generation...nooooo....

My problem is how he pretty much baits the other artists that he considers his "competition," almost as if he's desperate to start a gang war with Justin Timberlake or something. It's pathetic. Do your music, put it out, let the fans enjoy it, and that's it. There's no need to badmouth other performers just because you found pee in your corn flakes.

Popular music is the only area of entertainment where artists do this silly "rivalry" stuff.

You don't see actors openly saying how much better they are than another actor.

I didn't see Daniel Craig bragging that Quantam Of Solace was going to destroy Madagascar at the box office.

It just seems so silly. And no, i don't care about street cred either.

The only person Kanye West speaks for is himself.

The "voice of a generation" is usually declared by a majority of others, not oneself.

He's just a big, frickin' baby. I think no one really cares what this guy has to say, really.

I know I don't.

Ask Al Sharpton, I wouldn't know....I don't think you were, I was playing around with the smilies a bit, but I don't think KW is as bad as people make him out to be. The press and media can turn a person into somebody they're not. I'll just say that.

I have to disagree I think he is an arrogant jerk and his music stinks, but then again R&B music is a joke now.

I agree. I think in Kanye's case, he's figuring if he says it, it will stick and become true. He has his fans, but there's no way he's the voice of this generation. For starters, he's said some real wild things that not many people would want to be associated with. He's very radical in his thinking.

It's kind of like when Dangerous came out in 1991 and Michael Jackson declared himself the "King Of Pop" in all his promotion and advertising.

No one gave him that title -- he gave it to himself. Ironically, he gave himself that name at the end of his ride. After that is when things started going downhill (accusations of child molestation, marriage to Lisa Marie Presley, his second "marriage" and fatherhood and all the weird stuff that gets attributed to him).

He waited too long to call himself the "King Of Pop." He certainly isn't the king of anything these days.

As for Kanye...gimme a break. He's certainly the ego of a generation, that's for sure!

King of Weirdness, lol. That's interesting, how Michael Jackson crowned himself the King of Pop. I didn't know that. It doesn't surprise me. This brings to mind another recent attempt to self-annoint.

Diane Keaton, a friend to Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes, started saying in interviews that Katie was the new Audrey Hepburn. Around that time, I saw a Vanity Fair spread, with Katie done up to look like Audrey Hepburn, complete with gloves and hat. On Katie's Wikipedia page, there's there's a reference that Katie Holmes is the "Audrey Hepburn of our generation". Wiki can be edited. I personally think there was a PR campaign to have Katie as the new Hepburn, but it didn't catch on. While I think that Katie Holmes has a delicate beauty and is a decent actress, she's never be on par with the legend Audrey Hepburn, not to me anyway.

It makes me wonder how many other stars orchestrated their own legacies.

The rap game is a whole other world. You have to be overly confident in order to make it.

Yo, LB, do you think that you could ever rap?

LB would be a good name, and you have the ability to rhyme and say all that lingo.

Yeah, MJ dubbed himself the King of Pop, and Lil Wayne, or Weezy, calls himself the Best rapper alive. What do you guys make of that? That's pretty much on the same level as what Kanye said, but I don't agree with what Wayne said, on the other hand.

Well, not IMO. Dubbing yourself "the voice of this generation" is very broad and self-serving. And not backed up by anything, really.

Michael Jackson, on the other hand, had considerable success in the recording industry for over 20 years when his press for Dangerous called him "The King Of Pop." I still think he was full of himself, but he had something to back it up with.

As for Lil Wayne or whatever, I don't follow his career, because, well...he's a rapper. I don't do rap, so I don't care who says he's the best rapper alive.

Waynes not the best. I know I'm probably offending a lot of people right now, but honestly, he's nothing special. He's overly hyped and people like his voice; that's it. His metaphors sound like those of a 5 year old and he rhymes the same words. He's a bit odd too, like a lot of the time I think he's so drugged up he doesn't even know what he said last.

Well don't be "playing" with certain ones when you're quoting someone and use inappropriate smilies or you could get people irritated for no reason.

Have you been on many forum boards before SO?

That's fine. It's your opinion. But to respond to that, I think people are arrogant when it comes to hip hop. If they don't like an artist (btw, a lot of hip hop artists will say, I'm the king of this city, this state, or king of rap etc. so it's no big deal I don't think), they consider them cocky. Some people just don't like his music specifically which I'm cool with. I just hope the people that don't understand the music, don't look at the artists like they're big-shots or whatever. Even if it is the case, their are problems with artists of every genre.

I dont think all rap artists are like Kayne West. I just dont like the genre but thats me.
