The series started out with Earl getting hit by a car, which led to his belief in Karma and his desire to make up for all of his past misdeeds. In season 3, he got sent to prison, hit by another car, lapsed into a coma, woke up, fell in love, and ultimately ended up with another failed marriage. In season 4, Earl won't be facing as many obstacles. They're getting back more to the roots of the show and focusing on the list.

Garcia says that they "want to get back to the basics of what we loved doing in season 1 and not have to be so crazy and worried about getting [Earl] out of corners we've painted him into and so far it's been fantastic. We're having a blast with it; we get to have this guest cast come in and meet these new crazy characters every week."

That's the best news I've heard. Last season wasn't very good.

Personally, I didn't mind the prison-coma storyline. If anything, it tested Earl's character; and after all that happened, he decided to continue with his karma mission.

Hopefully, they will get Catalina and Randy back together this season.

I just got done watching Earl and I loved it. Judging by the ratings I hope it isn't too late to save the show though.
