View Full Version : Sooooo! What do YOU do for a living?

I've been meaning to ask this on here for some time now. I remembered this just now, so I'm making this thread before I forget again.
I've wondered what some of you guys here do for a living... well, now this is your chance.
Right now, I am taking a break from school to just work (couldn't stand being in school any longer... I had been in school for 20 consecutive years. Talk about major burnout!), and liking not being in school so far. I may not have a glamorous job (hint: the bull terrier is their mascot), but it gets my bills paid, the workplace is pleasant and I have great co-workers. :)

i get paid for going to school. working on a certificate in word processing. it's probably the easiest major my school offers and it's also my last resort because my ADD got in the way of everything else i tried to major in, but that's ok because i plan on doing that kind of stuff as a living.
Right now, nothing.
I'm kind of "In between" jobs right now, trying to find something else to do.

You don't happen to be in tv/movie industry do you? I am between jobs now. For almost a year, I have been doing production assistant work for TV and movies. Just finished up a two months project for the WE cable channel and can't work too much now. since I am recovering from an auto accident I was in while on the job.

I'm a Field Business Manager for a construction company. I basically run the admin office. Sometimes I AM the office, other times I have a staff, depending on the size of the job. For the last 4 months I have been traveling to different job sites, but I am heading next week to another long term project near New Orleans where I will have a staff of 5 I think. :) This should be fun!

I worked in construction for about eight years, until the company I worked for closed up shop in the Spring. I really don't want to go back into that biz so I'm thinking about going back into stage tech stuff, which is what I did ten years ago.

I work in an automotive plant. It pays good, but overall it kinda sucks, mainly because I am pretty much in one spot so its quite boring. Its been up and down lately because of the economy in such, in fact I was off all of July, and will be off for the next two weeks. I like having the time off, but it kinda makes it hard to pay the bills.
I go to school part time and really like that a lot. If I could find a way to go to school full time and get money to live off of, I would so quit my job.

Over the road truck driver.
There, I said it. I usually put off telling people what I do for a living because I know the reputation truck drivers have with the general public. Is that sad or what, especially when most truck driviers are very safe drivers, including me. It's the jerky drivers out there that people are going to remember and that's what gives us a black eye.
It pays good, but overall it kinda sucks,

That describes my job, too, some of the time. There is a good side though, on my job, I get to see this beautiful country(I've been to every state in the lower 48), I can pretty much set my own schedule as long as I get my loads delivered on time(which I do), I can bring my dogs, and the best part, I hardly ever see my boss!!:D

I appreciate that, Monika. It's definitely not a lifestyle for everybody. Quite a few drivers only make it a few years, alot are married & have kids and to be away from their families for a few weeks at a time, they just can't handle it. I've just passed 10 years doing this, I never thought I would make it this long!!
The reason I don't talk much about what I do is on another message board some guy had the nerve to call me "nasty" & "trailer trash" just because of what I do. That stung a bit. Here I am making a decent living for myself and as I like to put it, doing my part "delivering America's goods", and for him to make snide comments like that? I found out he lives in the Minneapolis area, which I go to often. Who knows that some of the product I deliver, he ends up buying at the store!!

Phoebe, I know how it feels. People think my job as a teachers aide is so easy. Those people have never had to work with a child who can't sit still for more than a few minutes, who doesn't have the appropriate socials skills required to make friends with other children, who still struggles to read and write at a 2nd grade level even though they're considered a 4th grader, who has a meltdown whenever there is a slight change in their daily schedule, or who is so obsessive-compulsive that they can't sit down to learn until they've gone through their "rituals". I could go on and on.
I've always said that those who criticize what other people do for a living would never last a day if they had to do that person's job. At least one thing you and I can say is, "Hey, at least our jobs can't be outsourced to China!"

Phoebe, I've known for ages about your job. I know you told me about it before. :) I have nothing but respect for what you do. You're someone just trying to get the goods delivered on time and you have to be really careful doing so. It'd be a pretty cool job to have... I could do all the traveling that I want to do. :D
I met a guy a few years ago who was/is a truck driver too (I think he mainly transported furniture, but I don't really remember now). I understand some of them can make really good money doing so... but I think it would depend on the main type of things you transport.
Still, though. Can't beat the fact you get to travel! When you get to your destination, do you often have free time to explore the city?

Yeah...ed aides don't get the respect we deserve, despite the fact that we do a lot of things the teacher would otherwise have to do. I do work with some who are appreciative, but it's not 100%.
And  ... we have college educations, too. It's not like we wandered in off skid row.

Kristen, I admire you for what you do!! See, I don't think I could do what you do. It takes a special(and very patient!!) person to be able to work with children all day and to deal with what you have to deal with!! What gets me is if the child is not learning what he/she has to learn, like you mentioned the 4th grader reading & writing at a 2nd grade level, who gets blamed? The parent? Heck no!! Somebody else always is to blame.
I've always said that those who criticize what other people do for a living would never last a day if they had to do that person's job.
Yeah, I never judge a person by what they do for a living. I figure, hey, at least they're working!! In fact, I've had the show Ice Road Truckers on all afternoon on the History Channel. Now I could never do what they do!!
At least one thing you and I can say is, "Hey, at least our jobs can't be outsourced to China!"

Ewwww!
But you know the thing about that guy is after he started his crap with me, I started reading some of his past posts and he started things with other people, too(like that was any surprise). The best thing of all was not 20 min. before he started in on me, he had posted that he didn't have much money, but then when I was talking about what I do and that I make a good living, he then "mentions" that he get $300,000 a year, he gets to spend $300,000 a year blah, blah, blah, and he was talking like that was what he made. Then at one point, he mentioned it was a grant. Isn't a grant something that you use for research or to go to school? It's not for your personal use, is it? So that proves that he's a liar, too, having to lie to make himself look to me. That's just sad.

Phoebe, I've had encounters with people like that on the internet too. They're really just childish pathetic bullies. But unfortuneately, they still hurt your feelings. :( And as I can't even drive an ordinary car, I have to admire you for being able to drive a truck. :D
Homeriffic, I was like one of those kids, that you take care of now. I had several different personal assistants through the years. I had them all the way through elementary school, middle school and high school, even before I officially had my diagnosis. So I know you're needed, and it's probably not an easy job either. :)

Not as much as I would like!! I've been able to see some things like the Space Needle and the 1st time I went to Las Vegas was in my truck. We used to have a terminal in Minneapolis, I had the night off, left my trailer and drove my truck to the Mall of America. I was also able to see Devil's Tower in Wyoming. I've been wanting to see that for over 20 years because Close Encounters of the Third Kind is one of my favorite movies!! So that, to me, was very exciting. I parked my truck right off the shoulder from the road right near Devil's Tower, took my dogs out, tied them to the back of the trailer, went across the street, and took a picture of them in front of it!!
Yes, I know I'm a little strange!!

Sigh... the MOA. A place I've only been to about 234623623572457 times. I love that place. I'm pissed that "The Park at MOA" is no longer Camp Snoopy. Boo.
I got to see Devil's Tower too. :D I was 12 (11 years ago) and I have a pic of me in front of it. I also vaguely recall going on a hike in the area around there, altho I could be wrong. It's freaking beautiful, though.
Man, I'd love to come with you on your travels. It'd be pretty fun. :)
