View Full Version : SO's Smileys - Your Favorites?

i think we can all agree that SO has a pretty amazing collection of smileys. from the basics to the fantastically random, i've never seen an internet forum with such a wide variety of smileys. so what are your favorite smileys?

here's my list, with a bit of history for each smiley i post. why, you ask? well it's the middle of the summer at 5:00 PM and i'm home alone, you do the math.

1) :racist:. created by Ashlee in 2005, :racist: is just epic, imo, because...well it just is. i can't describe it. it's just a feeling you get whenever you post the :racist: smiley. it's such a RUSH! plus, :racist:, or Al, even has his own myspace (www.myspace.com/youisaracist). how many smileys can say that?.

2) :grady:. :grady: was introduced to SO in 2003 and gained a loyal following that called themselves "The Grady Bunch". however, pretty soon everyone realized how great grady was and started using him. Grady is amusing, to me, because of the way he looks at you. like he's PLANNING to do something. but you know he's not, because everyone knows Grady has a good heart, and would never hurt a fly.

3) ticked:. ticked: started his life on SO as a post icon, you know, the little smileys you see next to the thread title. however, in 2004, Sarah discovered just how funny ticked: really looked, and started a thread on it's hilarity. soon after, it's popularity grew and it was added as a smiley. i dont need to say why its amusing because Sarah described it perfectly right here. (http://www.sitcomsonline.com/boards/showthread.php?t=116852) btw, recently it's code has gone from pissed: to ticked:. i didnt know that until a few weeks ago so anyone who thought he died or something, his code just changed.

4) :grr:. "Grr", or Captain McAllister from The Simpsons, began life as an uploaded image used frequently by the HD gang in 2003. eventually, it's popularity spread over to the Chit Chat board where it became, and still is, a phenomenon. Capt. McAllister is so great because he can be used in almost any situation and still be funny, because he's just THAT cool.

5) :mrtarver:. Mr. Tarver wasn't added as a smiley until 2005, but some historians suggest it may have been used as early as 2003 as an uploaded image, probably by Crystal and her friends on the random board. there was a period in 2005 when Mr. Tarver was deleted a long with Al and oh...let's just say, it wasn't pleasant. he is epic because it is a great way to show sadness sarcastically, and because it is heartwarming to see Mr. Tarver all choked up by his daughter's singing.

well there's my 5 favorites with a history lesson behind them. hope you enjoyed it...or even read it. :grr: (see what i meant about :grr:?). anyway, now it's time for you to share YOUR 5 favorite smileys with us. DONT BE SHY!

Unfortunately Joe, I won't be able to include any historical anecdotes along with my post. :\

#1. :spam: I love this one, it's very simple but it says a lot.
#2. :spam31: This one is just too funny. Someone waving a banner that says SPAM lol.
#3. :beeutiful Nuff said.
#4. :mooner: A little risqué but funny none the less.
#5. :fart: The most underrated smilie on this board. FACT.

I'm glad to see that the :racist: love is still growing strong. I'll never forget during the height of his popularity when I posted stickers of him throughout my whole highschool, including my friend's locker and a security officer called her to his office to see if she was being harassed. Good times. :mrtarver: <-- which brings me to another favorite, the tarv. :grr: obviously, because it has a useful expression.

Others include :grady: :roper ticked: I may have created :roper as well or it might just be in my head because I find his face in that pic so amusing.

man, just today at work i was thinking about how funny the ticked: smiley is...:lookaroun :grr: anyway, here are mine.

1) ticked: it's hard to choose between that and :grr:, but i was the founder of ticked:'s holiness, so i'll have to go with him.
2) :grr: i've thought about getting a tattoo of it. really, i have.
3) :racist: epic lulz, no explanation needed.
4) :mrtarver: same.
5) :rip: i like this one, it's kinda cute. :grr:
bonus: i was going to make a memorial to :sarah:, which was named after me and put into an early grave a long time ago, but now i see that it has been resurrected in a different form. YAY!!!111111

oh and here is a tribute to :racist:. do not be disheartened by the ends curling inward; look at it as an indication that it has been there for a very long time without losing its value and being taken down. edit: man i didn't even notice the safety pin lodged in there until just now, nor do i have any idea how it got there.

I was just thinking about that "I Wanna Be Rich" video you made with that dancing Mr. Roper picture the other day. I had it bookmarked, but it was deleted off my computer.

oh my GOD. :rotflmao: i wish i had a story like that. i used to spam a certain individual with SO smileys and such over MSN and laugh at the comments he made about how he was getting stupider just by looking at them and how retarded and deprived i was for sending them to him, but eh...no authority figures got involved.

And who the hell is this guy?:bd:
big daddy. it was made by a whiny, overdramatic, hypocritical traitor by the username of pandora_spocks. if i were in charge, i would remove it just because she made it (and because no one has really used it since she stomped out of here with her nose in the air anyway).

The two best smilies are  and :grr:, just because they're CLASSICS and were contained in one of the single most hilarious posts ever made at Sitcoms Online.
