View Full Version : 5.8 Earthquake...for those who live here in So. California

Did you feel it? ;) 5.8 centered in Chino Hills. Felt from San Diego to Las Vegas. We really felt it here. It was a rolling motion. I was on the phone when I felt a sensation and seen my fish aquarium water sloshing around and the flat screen tv moving.

Our landline phone and cell phones are not working.

The Richter magnitudes are based on a logarithmic scale (base 10). What this means is that for each whole number you go up on the Richter scale, the amplitude of the ground motion recorded by a seismograph goes up ten times. Using this scale, a magnitude 5 earthquake would result in ten times the level of ground shaking as a magnitude 4 earthquake (and 32 times as much energy would be released). To give you an idea how these numbers can add up, think of it in terms of the energy released by explosives: a magnitude 1 seismic wave releases as much energy as blowing up 6 ounces of TNT. A magnitude 8 earthquake releases as much energy as detonating 6 million tons of TNT. Fortunately, most of the earthquakes that occur each year are magnitude 2.5 or less, too small to be felt by most people.

We are good sweetie. ;) My son has no idea what occurred. I don't want to tell him because he will be scared. My youngest daughter is here.

i felt the earthquake, but it seemed to be bigger than a 5.8. the whole house started shaking and i kept thinking "this is the big one....another northridge earthquake" as i was trying to get my grandma & my dog out of the house. i only felt the main 5.8 one. i didn't feel any aftershocks. but our phones were having problems not going through or connecting, especially cell phones. but they're working now.
hope everyone else is okay!

Doesn't seem to be too major fortunately, but the biggest one in the L.A. area since Northridge in 1994. This is why I don't have a desire to live in California.

Yeah BABY!!! That was fun!
I felt it all the way down here in San Diego; rattled the windows and the bed was moving back and forth!

Irene, I'm glad you're all ok there in So. Calif. :) I didn't feel anything here up along the coast, though. Of course, I'm a couple a hundred miles north of you guys. Again, glad everything's ok, friend.

A friend's mom did fall out of bed during the earthquake; and she lives in the West Covina area, which is not that far from Chino Hills; that is the only minor injury that has been reported to me; other than that, nothing, major here. My dad did call and asked if I was okay. I just laughed and mentioned that the quake, just rattled the windows a bit and the bed felt like it was on the back of a moving pick up truck...

My step-daughter just called me. She lives in Santa Barbara and she said she felt it pretty good there. She works in tall building and she felt the sway.

We have earthquakes so much here that register less than 3.5, we don't even bat an eyelash. But this is the most significant one we have had in a very long time.

They can be scary, but I think of it this way... if there were no quakes here, there would not be scenery like this:

It was a very noticeable quake, but not very bad. It is not like in the movies. The only time it is scary is when you first notice it and you can't help but wonder, "Is this the big one?" As soon as it is over, you go back to what you were doing. I love living here. I wouldn't want to live anywhere else. We may not have warnings abt quakes, but I'd rather deal with this than with tornados or hurricanes.

I am so glad that I use museum putty for my fine china collectibles. They stayed put. ;)

Wow, I'm glad you guys are okay! We lived in California for 2 years and never felt anything. Here in Michigan I felt a tiny one a couple months ago. I don't remember how big it was or anything.

exaaaactly. the first couple of seconds i just kept thinking "is this another northridge earthquake?" but then after those first few seconds, everything goes back to normal.

LOL, you guys!!! If you're trying to make me jealous of the married/boyfriend-girlfriend life, it worked!!! LOL I'm stuck here in the South, hopelessly single as usual.

ANYWAY, I just wanted to say that I really hope Irene and Inspector and all SO members in CA are well and safe. I'm sorry to hear about the quake but I'm glad that everybody seems to be alright. For me, an earthquake is my little chihuahuas and my cocker spaniel chasing each other all over the house, making enough noise to burst an eardrum! LOL

Lauren and I were kidding around, having some laughs, that the two of us are in dire need of..
And, thank you, sweetie for wishing the members of SO (who live in California) for being, safe and well. I live in San Diego, and the quake was barely felt...
