Should restaurants charge people to use the restroom?

"Doors open with token or coin. Customers must request a free token from cashier."

A sign says the security lock was installed to help pay vandalism costs and to continue providing restrooms.

the restaurant provides free tokens to patrons.
what's the point? and how are free tokens going to pay for vandalism costs? i don't get it.

OH Nuts!

Pay toilets are TACKY TACKY TACKY. Nickel and diming is absolutely BAD BUSINESS. Also, I thought there was a ruling a while back they were illegal? Not sure abt this pt. though - anyone???

not sure about pay toilets being illegal however in ct its illegal for gas stations to charge you for using the air pumps, still there are places that still do charge.

No, but people SHOULD flush them and not leave their stinky **** 'n'pee on the toilets

It's very clever the way they've worked around the law. Since they are giving you a free token to use the restroom, then technically they aren't charging you to use it.

It's also a good way of letting potential vandals know that the store is aware that someone is in the restroom, since you have to go to someone in charge and ask for access.

Will it work? Who knows.

The restaurant isn't charging customers - it's really no different than having a key lock that requires you to go to the register to ask about. Once they start charging for the tokens, that's another story

Having travelled around the world quite a bit, I can say that the US is one of the few countries in the world where you do not have to pay to use the restroom. In countries where you do pay, there is always an attendant who makes sure that the restroom stays clean and tidy, which is a good thing. Still, I'm not sure how this will fly in the US...

Eh, that'll just make me take my food home. I'm not about to ask someone if I can piss.

no, they shouldn't. they would probably tell certain people not to use the bathroom, though that is another problem as well. at my job last year, we changed our bathroom to a token only one since we were having so many problems (messy and gross bathrooms, people not locking the door properly, etc.). but then it became a bigger problem because every five minutes we'd hear "do we HAVE TO PAY FOR THE BATHROOM!?!" or while we were with customers taking their order other people would just come to the front of the line & demand a token. so we eventually got rid of it. lol.

I would not take my business to any restaurant that required me to pay money for using the restroom. Get an attendant in the bathroom to keep it clean and make sure no one is causing problems.

When I was in Europe it was common to pay for the bathrooms, only it was usually just a tip to the cleaning lady and you weren't required to. At the same time, the bathrooms WERE a lot cleaner. But I don't think you should HAVE to pay.

I can understand both sides of the issue so I voted undecided. Its really a shame that they even have to consider it.

I totally agree. I'd never pay to use a restroom. I haven't been in BK in over 20 years anyway though.

I don't think they should charge you to use the restroom, and TJ has a very good point.

Exactly. Thank you. It is not working around the law. A business has the right to keep bathrooms locked and have customers ask for a key or in this case a token.

If you are going to vandalize a bathroom, chances are you won't ask for a token since you are letting people see your face.

exactly, the title of the article is extremely misleading. they aren't charging anyone. i hate journalists who twist stories slightly to get good headlines.

Yea I wouldn't do that either. For one thing you have to wait in line where other people are ordering food and then you get to the front of the line finally and ask the question everyone want's to hear .

on the boardwalk in Wildwood (beach resort town in NJ) all of the bathrooms had attendants which i thought was kind of weird. they handed you towels and made sure you flushed the toilets and everything...there was this one guy that seemed REALLY into it which i found funny  anyway the bathrooms were pretty clean, you didnt have to pay although they did have tip jars.

 You are not asking to pee. You are asking for a key/token. It is that way at gas stations all over and some food places.

I try not to use public restrooms but traveling or being out and abt, you can't help but have to use the bathrooms sometimes. AND, I flush using my foot. ;)

Money or not, I hate the idea. I've always hated having to get rest room keys or whatever from someone. My dentist's office is like that. Unless I can't, I just wait.

Actually when I saw the 1st post, I didn't realize it was a link to an article. The title made it sound like you had to pay $ to use the facilities, like in olden days with a coin mechanism on stall doors. Asking for a token that is free is not charging people - so the details in the story are completly different from the title - and it was ONLY the title I read. And yes tokens sound like an effective way to prevent vandalism esp. if there is a video camera near the cashiers.
