View Full Version : What MUST you have on or with food?

Janice
07-22-2008, 07:52 PM
What food or beverages do you need certain things to go with them? This is not a question of what foods you love or hate, but a question of what you MUST have to go with your food. For example, I love grated cheese on Italian food, such as pasta with tomato sauce; however, I'm not listing that because I can eat it without grated cheese if I have to. Also, list foods you would never combine...i.e..I would never drink milk with pizza.

Chinese food must have sweet sauce.
Fried clams must have tartar sauce.
I won't eat a peanut butter and jelly sandwich without milk.
I need milk for most cookies. There are a few kinds that I can have with tea.
My husband must have mustard on hot dogs.
I'm not big on salt, but it's a must on steak, potatoes and eggs (which I rarely eat).

I have to have ranch dressing on baked potato or fries or I can't eat them.

Mustard is a must have on most sandwiches, hamburgers and hot dogs

Pizza and subs - black olives, mushrooms and green peppers are another must have

I must have Pepperoni on my pizza. I can change other toppings around but I've never had a pizza without Pepperoni.

I must have Mayonnaise on all my subs.

LOL Sonny!! My husband and son are just like you. In fact when I make my homemade pizza they always complain that I don't put enough pepperoni's on it. LOL! So, I usually tell them to do it for me. One time, they used two whole 8 ounce bags for a pizza. I was like yuck! LOL! They had fun eating it that night....

Now my musts:

I must have sour cream and butter on my baked potatoes.
I must have mustard and ketchup on my hot dogs.
I must have whipped cream on my ice cream.
I must have salt on my steak.
I must have anchovies on my pizza.

Melted cheese with a baked potato. If it's not drowning in cheese, I won't eat it.

DH must have bread with his burger or dog whereas I was brought up to eschew extra bread.

FIL eats ketchup with everything.

BIL drinks milk out of a cup when eating cereal but the cereal itself must be dry.

I was brought up without salt but as an adult must add it to soup, bread dough, baking, spinach, and corn and potatoes.

SALT!!!! ;)

I cannot eat a sandwich without mayo (unless it's a PBJ, then hold the mayo ).

Wow, similar food tastes!!

It bugs my sister whenever we get something to eat, I immediately put salt on it, she always says, "taste your food first"!!

Milk with PB & J, too and milk with anything sweet especially like a piece of cake or glazed donut. It seems milk cuts the sweetness.

Probably a wee bit off-topic, but whenever I go out to eat, I always have to get soup with my meal, even in the summer. I love soup and that's the first question I ask my server, what kind of soup do they have.

This is opposite, but someone else mentioned it and it made me remember...I cannot eat cereal with milk on it. The thought makes me sick. Soggy cereal... puke:

I have to have some kind of juice or fruit drink for my first drink of the day. I've done water on rare occasions, and I like hot cocoa on cold mornings, but I mean I can't drink pop or coffee or anything else. Gotta be juice or cocoa.

I can't eat cake, chocolate, or any sweets or baked goods without a glass of skim milk.

I have to have some kind of fruit with my breakfast.

I won't eat a sandwich or sub without mustard.

I can't eat pizza or pasta without a side of salad. (My Italian grandmother forbade us from eating those foods without some kind of salad!)

I need coffee in the morning and a relaxing mug of tea at night.

I can eat broccoli and spinach raw, but not cooked.

I prefer milk or water with my meals.

Right now, I'm enjoying some soup from the Gourmet Market on my street.

Yeah,this isn't soup weather, but I couldn't resist.

Anyway, I just realized i cannot enjoy soup without something to crumble up and sprinkle on top.

Saltines are always good. Goldfish crackers are even better.

The market where I bought the soup gives out little bags of bread cubes which are pretty tasty.

Plain soup is boring.

I won't eat a pancake, waffle, etc. if it is drowning in syrup. A very small amount is fine, with no butter. I eat frozen waffles without anything on them.

On the flip side, I won't eat a salad that doesn't have enough dressing.

Can't eat vanilla ice cream by it's self... must have chocolate or something in it.
Can't eat a cheeseburger if it doesn't have lettuce, mayonnaise and ketchup.
Can't eat chocolate with out some sort of beverage.
Can't eat mac salad without some sort of meat on the side.
Can't eat chicken nuggets/chicken tenders without honey mustard sauce.
Can't eat ANYTHING with ranch on it. Ranch is disgusting.

That's pretty much all I can think of.

Almost everything: KETCHUP!

french fries with catsup is a must but in a sick mood I would substitute mayo - this too tastes very nice & is kinda Belgian - but oy - the calories and fat put that combo in the stratosphere. However, I only have french fries once every 3 months and its usually 1/3 of a small portion with a little catsup (hold the mayo these days) - if I didn't have to watch what I eat it would be a LOT OF catsup -Rich loves catsup too. (which is also nice on potato chips)

Salt on a baked potato

mustard on a hot dog an absolute must!

Some type of green fresh veggie with at least one of my meals

LoveMrsG

If I'm eating either a chicken sandwich or a hamburger, it MUST have salt and mayo.

If I can't have ketchup with my fries, I need at least a truckload of salt.

I LOVE mashed potatoes and gravy from KFC, but I can't eat it unless I get an extra gravy and smother the potatoes with it. I can never have enough! (And, oh yeah, the truckload of salt. )

If I'm eating chicken strips or chicken nuggets, BBQ sauce is an absolute necessity.

If I'm eating anything with squirted canned cheese on it, I have to have a soda of some kind to drink with it. I can't eat it without the soda and I can't drink anything but soda with it. Whether it be Coke, Mountain Dew, whatever, it doesn't matter, but water, juice, etc. is not an option.

Hamburgers must have cheese (Cheeseburgers only), like Emo Joe.

White rice must have some butter (Smart Balance)

Over-easy eggs must have a side dish of Thomas's English Muffins with butter, and/or grits

Hot Dogs must have all of the following: Mustard, Ketchup, sauerkraut, relish and chopped onions.

Pancakes or waffles must have some butter and maple syrup, but not drenched in it.

Last but not least, hot coffee must have one sugar and liquid coffeemate creamer.

Oh yeah, and (as others have mentioned) butter and salt on corn on the cob.
