The Last Episode Questions

I have seen the final episode several times but am still confused. Was the entire series supposed to be in a book written by the Roseanne Connor character? Or, did she start writing after Dan's heart attack? Or, did she start writing after the episode where Dan and the kids set up the basement for her to write in? Remember, it had a flashback to that episode where they set up the basement and told her that now she could be a writer. Was everything that happened up until that point real? That was the most bizarre final episode of a series I've ever seen.

I think it is taken as you want it cause some people just ignore the entire ending cause of the way she ended.

I suppose the flashback to the writing room given to her was where the book started. At least that makes the most since. I guess she decided that episode could tie into the end and a flashback would allow you to realize that she was writing her book in there, cause at the end she was in the writing room reading her manuscript/book.

I consider Dan's heart attack at the reception the final episode. The last season was too strange. :lol:

She definitley did NOT start writing right after Dan's heart attack. David and Darlene were just married and Becky and Mark were already together.

The thing that makes the most sense is that she started writing the book when she got her writing room (the end of season 2). Then everything there on out (Seasons 3-9) was part of her book (Mark with Becky, Darlene with David, the lottery, etc).

I wish so bad that they hadn't of made any part of the show be Roseanne the character's book. It really ruined it as they undid everything we had watched for those years. I hate fiction within fiction. That was the dumbest way they could have ended it. There's no way Darlene was better with Mark and Becky with David. They had no chemistry at all. The show should have just ended after season 8. Does anyone know why they decided to have them win the lottery? Plus, Dan having an affair was so out of character. Dan would have never cheated. That ruined the character they had built for 9 years. Then they say it never happened anyway but was all part of Roseanne the character's book.

In the season 9 extras Roseanne said she wanted to write about the class sytem in America. I think this is why she had the Conners win the lottery.

just to show how i feel about the finale... i basically regard the finale as a split in the roseanne timeline, so to speak. everything up to it is considered the normal flow of events, and everything is unchanged. lottery had been won, david and darlene were together, becky and mark were together, and dan was still alive. jackie is not a lesbian. the one episode where roseanne starts writing and gets all those writing materials for her birthday, is where the split occurs. in this reality and such up to the finale and onwards, the lottery was never won. becky married david, and darlene married mark. jackie was a lesbian and the mom was not, as previously thought. so yes, that's right, after the ending of season 2 and into the season 3 and beyond is debatable as to whether or not it actually happened. if you're wondering, i choose to believe the original flow of events.

i think the finale was excellent, it was a great idea and all, it was just extremely uncalled for and it really didn't fit in. not to mention, the show just got so whacky and out of character that it wasn't funny. the show evolved into something it wasn't and i almost feel that the monologue at the end was an attempt to rebuke all that but it was taken miles too far.

This is why Roseanne, in my opinion, is one of the shows who concept changed dramatically from season one to the finale. It was not the same show. What started out as a great show that was as close to reality that I have ever seen, ended up a piece of garbled mess where the characters were not the same. I hate to say this abt a show I love so much, but seeing how during Roseanne's pregnancy, there was little, if any, happiness going on their lives. Roseanne was more sarcastic than ever. She was behaving in a way that was just a turn off. For a character who so badly wanted another baby, she sure didn't show it. That baby shower episode has got to be the worst time I have seen the characters behave.

I always thought the last episode was so stupid; and correct me if I'm wrong, but we are talking about the one where Darlene and David get married and Dan has the heart attack at the wedding, right?

I'm not a fan of the show at all, and without Darlene and her wisecracks, I wouldn't find it funny in the least. But she really made that show. It definitely had it's moments.

I thought that the last episode was good and I enjoyed it, but it is true that it can be very confusing at times trying to figure things out in it. Roseanne started writing her book after she got the writing room so everything up from seasons 3-9 was all based on events that happened to her with a few minor adjustments made. Such as the matter of Dan's death, the fact of losing him had been so horrible she couldn't bare having it happen in her writing too so she made it to where he survived it which honestly I like much better because the idea that Dan actually died due to the heart attack is too awful.

I liked the last episode. But I understand why some don't.

With that said, I don't think it really dismisses Season 3-9, except just tinkers with it. What happened really happened, but things were adjusted a bit to Roseanne's liking. So, Dan didn't die from his heart attack at the end of season 8, when, in reality, he did. Bev wasn't gay, Jackie was. Mark married Darlene and Becky David.

Everything else, the story, how everything played out in seasons three through eight (nine was really the only season completely altered by Roseanne's book), had the same basic outline, with just minor things changed to fit her book's narrative a bit more.

The last episodes don't exist for me. LOL. I think they are a horrible disservice and attempt to invalidate so much of what came of the character's lives. A terrible use of the Big Red Cosmic Reset Button (IMO).
