The Big Bang Theory returned with very, very strong ratings. Here they are :
The Big Bang Theory at a second-place 9.11 million viewers and a 3.7/11 among adults 18-49.
The episode prior to the strike it got 9.35 million viewers and a 3.8 18-49 demo. Considering it switched to the tougher 8:00 slot, daylight savings time, and going up against Dancing With The Stars these numbers are just as good if not better than it got prior to the strike. The audience has returned !!
Here is Variety's take on The Big Bang Theory ratings :
According to preliminary nationals from Nielsen, "The Big Bang Theory" opened the night for CBS with a second-place result (3.7 rating/11 in 18-49, 9.1 million viewers overall) that nearly matched the show's highest-rated episode of the fall -- even though it's now airing in an earlier timeslot and during daylight saving time. The 11 share repped a significant jump over the 9 share it had averaged with its eight original segs of last fall.

It certainly proves itself as a self-starter because the 9.11 prelim viewers are higher than anything HIMYM did in that slot in the fall. HIMYM had a season high last night thanks to Big Bang.

I completely agree. I was a little worried what might happen after the strike, but this is really good news. Very, very happy with the ratings from last night's episode.

Wow, I'm shocked. I guess we were wrong. I was definitely guessing 7-8 million for this one, but 9.11 million is unbelievable considering what it went through, with the strike taking its toll and it switching slots. This show is definitely the next biggest hit . . . How I Met Your Mother never got anything near this at 8pm. Looks like CBS made a great move. I wouldn't be surprised to see the ratings go beyond 10 million REALLY soon.

Final ratings it went down a bit to 8.93 million, but still the highest number in the 8pm half-hour of the season. I believe HIMYM's season high in that slot this season was 8.3 million.
Last night:
Time, Show, HH Rating/Share, Total Viewers in Millions, 18-49 Rating/Share, 25-54 Rating/Share
8:00PM THE BIG BANG THEORY 5.4/9, 8.93, 3.6/11, 4.3/11
8:30PM HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER 5.8/9, 9.61, 4.3/11, 5.0/12

Yes, and if you look closely it basically got the same shares as HIMYM. The only difference in the HIMYM higher numbers is that more people are watching TV at 8:30. Anyway, it was a season high for the 8:00 time slot. Great news for The Big Bang Theory.

Now, I'm thinking it's not as good as I thought. It was the lowest of all CBS's comedies . . . How I Met Your Mother was unreasonably high for some reason, and was even stronger at building it's audience than BBT was at 8:30. If HIMYM was that strong at 8:30, BBT would have probably acheived 10 million.

No, no, no. You are totally wrong. Look at the shares. They basically both got 11 shares which means they both had the same percentage of the audience in that time period. The difference is at 8:30 (and especially during daylight savings time) more people are watching TV than at 8:00. Get ready, as the weather gets nicer the ratings will drop further. Also, BBT had a much higher rating in the 8:00 than any HIMYM airing at 8:00 this season.
Here is HIMYM ratings at 8:00 for new episodes this season :
Date Viewers Demo
-----------------------------------------------
09/24/07 8.12 M 3.3
10/01/07 7.87 M 3.1
10/08/07 7.96 M 3.2
10/15/07 7.71 M 3.1
10/22/07 8.50 M 3.4
10/29/07 7.82 M 3.1
11/05/07 8.77 M 3.4
11/12/07 8.42 M 3.3
11/19/07 8.07 M 3.2
11/26/07 7.91 M 3.2
BBT got 8.93 and a 3.6 during Daylight savings time. That is a terrific rating. You can no longer judge the BBT vs. the other CBS sitcoms all in better ratings time slots. Judge BBT vs. what HIMYM did in the time slot as listed above.

Let me further illustrate my point using # 1 show, American Idol from last night here is the 8:00 half hour of American Idol followed by the 8:30 ratings of American Idol. Look at the large increase, it is due to more people watching TV at 8:30 than 8:00.
American Idol-3/18 ratings :
8:00 FOX 14.8/23 9.7/26 25,958,000
8:30 FOX 15.8/24 10.5/27 28,443,000
Look how it jumped 2.5 million viewers and .8 in the demo. That is why you cannot compare 8:00 to 8:30 shows this time of year. BBT getting 8.93 million and a 3.6 demo this time of year is a very, very good rating.

I still have to disagree with you. The shares may have been about the same, but total viewers for How I Met Your Mother were still up .68. It even built on Big Bang Theory a little more than Big Bang Theory build on HIMYM. I'm not saying it's a disappointment - I'm just saying it could have done a little better than it did. I guess it all comes down to how it does the next episode, whether it drops or rises.

You are both right. HIMYM did 9.61 million at 8:30, I believe that is higher than anything BBT did in that slot. I know the 18-49 of 4.3 has to be the best of that slot for this season. But I think the reason HIMYM did that was because of BBT. It is a better lead-off show than HIMYM. I do agree that BBT would have likely been higher if it aired at 8:30 but HIMYM would not have jump-started it like BBT did to HIMYM.
I don't think you should look at American Idol's jump from one half-hour to another, because that is one show while BBT and HIMYM are two shows. Plus AI was two-hours and it dropped at 9 and 9:30 thanks to DWTS.

If HIMYM had started the night, BBT would have definitely gotten higher ratings at 8:30, and HIMYM would have gotten it's normal 8 million or so.
I still think HIMYM was unreasonably high for some reason. We'll just have to wait until next Monday to see what happens.

Ratings wise, having BBT air first is better for CBS (may not be for the show, but for CBS yes). It proved that this week. HIMYM should be unusually higher again next week because of Britney Spears guest-starring.

I do agree with everything that has been said here. One thing is we cannot measure BBT against the other CBS sitcoms now, because at 8:00 and with daylight savings time it will be the lowest rated sitcom in the block. Also, the ratings will probably drop as the season goes on as the weather gets better.
You know what, we should not worry about the ratings that much. The show has been renewed for next year, and I don't know if anyone knows, but it was renewed next year for the FULL SEASON of 24 episodes. Johnny Galecki revealed that in an interview and the LA Times ran a story a few weeks ago which also said both Chuck Lorre sitcoms have been renewed for 24 episodes next year.
