http://www.samesame.com.au/news/local/2060/And-the-Gayest-Songs-Of-All-Time-Are.htm
To help celebrate the 30th Anniversary of Sydney’s Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras, last month we asked you to vote for what songs out of the vast catalogue of musical history you think deserve to be called camp classics.
We received thousands of votes, and now that they have all been counted counted and triple-checked, we’re proud to finally reveal exactly what songs have made it into the final list of the Gayest Songs of All Time.

I think Physical didn't make the list because it's almost too much of a guilty pleasure. Granted, so are a lot of the artists on that list, but while people will admit to liking Xanadu, Physical is a song you'll only crank up if there is nobody within a 200 foot radius

I definately prefer Physical to a lot of her more recent music. She's been doing nothing but Barbra Streisand-esque ballads for the past ten years. I think I've liked maybe two songs she's recorded in the last ten years.

Physical was probably one of Olivia's best albums as a whole, but it has a really bad reputation because of the title track. Landslide, Make A Move On Me, Silvery Rain, Falling, Stranger's Touch, etc.... It's a really good 80's pop record not unlike what Cyndi and Madonna were doing a few years later, but a lot of people will never look past the overplayed and tacky title track.

Physical was an obviously gay video, what other music videos were?

Landslide so should've been the leadoff single to that album instead of Physical, that song holds up so much better, and it only got to #52 when it came out as a single, but the album was almost a year old by the time it came out. Plus, we got to hear Olivia "rock out" on Silvery Rain
gay videos? Well, Olivia had a video album for the entire Physical album. Some of them are the worst videos ever (Silvery Rain is even worse than Physical), but Stranger's Touch was actually impressive for 1981 standards, especially since it was never intended as a single http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=RUdrcS3V2Eo

hmm, how about the Love Is A Stranger video by the Eurythmics, which was the height of Annie's gender-bending days, where she plays a hooker who then takes her sultry blonde wig off and reveals her orange buzzcut? That's pretty damn gay for a music video, even tho Annie's straight as it comes.

well, I like Bette a lot as an entertainer, but outside of "I'm Beautiful", I'm hardpressed to think of any real "gay anthems" she might've done, since most of her hits have been sacarrine ballads, and not the songs that really show her wild side

regarding my earlier quote regarding Xanadu being quote-on-quote "gay". I did not mean that as a bad thing. Olivia recently played a pride show in Australia and was quoted as introducing Xanadu as her biggest gay anthem. So it wasn't meant in any bad way, since she herself even regards it as such.

I suppose its true nothing really sticks out with overt gay themes, but considering she got her start in a gay bath house with Bary Manilow as her pianist, AND THAT SHE IS THE ULTIMATE IN CAMP, I would think one of her songs would make it on the list, at least for honorary merits. Maybe I'm being biased, but if someone said pick a lady singer you'd associate with the gay community, The Divine Miss M first comes to mind, followed closely by Cher & Babs and perhaps Donna Summer.

this list seems to be more mainstream oriented. There have been a lot of great dance records to come out over the years that are definately gay classics, but not necessarily songs the status quo might know. "So Many Men So Little Time" by Miquel Brown totally fits that quota, even tho I think that song might also not make the list because it had the misfortune of singing about sexual promiscuity right as AIDS got into full-swing, making the song in a bit of bad taste

I really hate to be cruel or sound like I'm in bad taste, because I'm not trying to be. But I am think it's really ironic that someone whose claim to fame was an answer to the AIDS crisis and sang about alternatives to sex, ends up dying a decade later from that very disease. It's kind of ironic, like seeing Whitney Houston participate in a Just Say No campaign in the 80's.

I know he did. But yeah first time I heard him it was on Music Choice and I did a double take to see if the name was right.
Looking back, I remember looking at that video and wondering if he was gay, because he seemed so feminine. Later, I learned I was right.

rofl, I thought you meant James, since he whines so much in his songs
Be glad you're not living in the UK, I read an article saying that his first album is the #1 selling album of the decade so far there.

That is ironic!

No, you are not cruel or saying anything in bad taste. YOU HIT IT ON THE NOSE. How ironic and what a hypocrite, if you ask me. If anything, safe sex should have been enough. Maybe he thought he could trust a partner or something, but too many people (gay or straight) don't use condoms and that is sad.

Is there any reason why "Situation," by Yaz was completley overlooked?

Didn't realize that "Make a Move On Me" was on that album but I very rarely buy Lp's or cd's so it's no wonder.
Speaking of ONJ, has anyone heard her cover of Ring of Fire?? It was from her 1977 LP, Making a Good Thing Better.   Not good. I love ONJ, but she should've left that one alone!
