Music drama The Five Heartbeats has topped a list naming the best urban movies of all time. The 1991 film, which was written and produced by its star Robert Townsend, follows the rise and fall of a 1960s African-American vocal group.
At two on the AOL Black Voices website list is A Solider's Story, followed by Steven Spielberg's The Color Purple, which starred Whoopi Goldberg, Danny Glover and Oprah Winfrey.
The top 10 Greatest Black Movies are:
1. The Five Heartbeats (1991)
2. A Soldier's Story (1984)
3. The Color Purple (1985)
4. Cooley High (1975)
5. Ray (2004)
6. Glory (1989)
7. Love Jones (1997)
8. What's Love Got To Do With It? (1993)
9. Ali (2001)
10. Do The Right Thing (1989)

The Five Heartbeats was really good, but I think The Color Purple is the one to beat, unless the fact that it was directed by Spielberg knocks it a peg or two lower.

A Soldier's Story is excellent.

even tho it's a recent movie (but then, so is Ray), Dreamgirls? All black cast and it won several Oscars.
I think this list is supposed to be movies that are predominantly black (even tho it doesn't matter that Ray and The Color Purple were directed by white people). Coming To America definately deserves a place here since 80% of the characters were black, but I think Beverly Hills Cop and Trading Places were both more racially integrated that there's no real point in putting them in the top black movies of all time list. Those two would almost be like putting Facts Of Life in the greatest black shows list just because of Tootie although everyone else was white.

What constitutes a "black movie"? The fact the stars are black? Having a majority black cast? Once you start defining movies that are "black movies" "hispanic movies" or "white movies" it begins to sound like a label rather than a movie for all to enjoy. Where is the list for Top White Movies of all time?

I don't know if I would put "The Five Heartbeats" as the #1 as far as greatest blacks movies. Nor would I put "Ray" "Love Jones" and "Ali" in the top 10. The rest pretty much deserve to be in the top 10.
What I think should be on that list for one is "Boyz N the 'Hood" (1991) To me, that movie gave the rebirth of urban movies of the modern era. It shot Cuba Gooding Jr. and Morris Chestnut to stardom. After that was made, you had a string of real-life coming of age black movies. Man, I can't believe that one didn't make the list.
