I will watch, althought it doesn't seem as exciting to me as some of the past shows. We shall see.

I had no idea "I drink your milkshake" was a movie quote, I thought it was just a lame SNL attempted catchphrase

LOL, they did a skit based on that last night. There Will be Blood is awesome though
Dean Winchester

rofl, I saw it last night. Then today I heard something about how "I drink your milkshake" is this year's "show me the money", and all the time, I figured it was just some catchphrase that the SNL writers came up with.

I usually know at least a few things abt the nominees, but not this year. I was shocked earlier this year when a thread was made abt Julie Christie. I had no idea that was the same actress that I knew from SHAMPOO. I thought that lady went into obscurity and was no longer acting. So, my surprise to find not only was she in a movie this past year, but she was also nominated. :faint:

I remember her in Heaven Can Wait...one of my favorites. It's hard to believe she's still getting leading roles at her age. Not many actresses in that age range are. The only one I can think of that might someday would probably be Meryl Streep.

As I posted in the thread I started, here are my predictions:
Best Picture - No Country For Old Men
Lead Actor - Daniel Day-Lewis
Lead Actress - Julie Christie
Supporting Actor - Javier Bardem
Supporting Actress - Cate Blanchett (tough category this year)
Director - Ethan & Joel Coen
Writing (Adapted) - No Country For Old Men
Writing (Original) - Juno
Documentary - No End In Sight (I just can't see them giving it to Michael Moore for some reason)
Not sure how I did this year, though. It would be awesome if Julie Christie becomes one of the select few actresses to win twice in a leading role tonight.
Ireneparalegal
02-24-2008, 08:56 PM
If I read correctly, if Julie wins it will be the biggest gap (in years) for any actor to have received a second Oscar after winning their first. I think it is 45 years.

Winner for Visual Effects - Golden Compass

02-24-2008, 09:19 PM
Best Supporting Actor - Javier Bardem
Dean Winchester
02-24-2008, 09:20 PM
were Javier Bardem and Jeffrey Dean Morgan (Denny from Grey's, the dad from Supernatural) separated at birth? They look so identical it's scary.
Gotta love how Jennifer Hudson announced the winner all monotonous and without any excitement or tension

I will admit I do think that Emile Hirsch was snubbed big time this year for Into The Wild. Hal Holbrook was great in his part and deserved the nomination, but Hirsch gave one of the most possessed and inspired performances I've seen in ages, he deserved to get nominated.
Wonder if there's going to be a surprise twist at the end of the night where Norbit comes out of nowhere and wins Best Picture

actually, I love it when the underdog wins. Cate, Julie and Ellen have had all the buzz, so it's neat that this girl came out of nowhere and won.

am I the only person who hates the way they always seem to look down on people's tv careers during the tribute? Granted, it's tv, but it is still a successful medium. I'd say most people under 45-50 know Jane Wyman better for Falcon Crest than anything, and Suzanne Pleshette's best loved role was on Bob Newhart, not in the movies, yet they didn't show those in the tributes.

They only show movie-related stuff on the Oscars. It has always been that way for as long as I can remember. The same way when the Emmys have their tributes, they show tv related clips, not movies.

Yea but the Academy awards is for movies.
that is true.
But the first time I really noticed this was 2001-2002, whenever Carroll O'Connor died. When they cut to him in the tribute, they showed scenes from films he was in. You can't do a tribute to him and not show a clip of All In The Family, AITF was the reason his death was as big a deal as it was. Makes me wonder when Cosby dies, will they show clips of Leonard Pt. 6 and Ghost Dad as their tribute?

I think this year was boring because there wasn't really as much going on in the world of film. In 2005, you had the Brokeback vs. Crash thing going on. Last year, you had The Departed for Best Picture, Pan's Labyrinth (which was one of the highest grossing foreign language films ever) for Best Foreign Language pics, and great performances in movies like The Pursuit Of Happyness, Notes On A Scandal (I still believe Judi Dench was robbed) and Dreamgirls up for awards. You couldn't go wrong. This year, there isn't that much excitement, Juno was really the only movie up that I had the urge to go see. Maybe next year will be better.

That is very true, but also, alot of the nominees weren't "sexy" picks. I don't mean these people weren't good looking, I mean that there really wasn't too many BIG names nominated to really spice things up.

You are right. I remember other years where all you hear is Oscar talk. This year, I guess with the strike, there was no reason to hype it up since it was a month ago that a strike was still in effect. By the time the strike was over, there wasn't enough time to do the normal hype as in previous years. But like you I was like, "Oh, today is the Oscars? Wow!"

While Day-Lewis was always the shoo-in to win, I still am stunned that Emile Hirsch didn't even get nominated for Into The Wild, unless the Academy was punishing him because he did that movie with Justin Timberlake last year as well.

Hal Holbrook at least got nominated for Supporting Actor, although Emile and Sean both deserved some recognition as well. Emile was almost possessed by the spirit of the real-life McCandless and totally got lost and immersed in the role. While it seemed like a lot of people were mixed between whether he should be admired or abhored for the life he led, just about everyone thought Emile was worthy of being nominated for the performance.
Overall the Oscar telecast was pretty good.
Jon Stewart did a good job, he had some good bits here and there.
Of course, the monday morning QB's all said he sucked. He did fine.
I noticed Jon's Hillary Clinton jokes didn't go over so well in his opening monologue.
Steve Carell had a great segment with Anne Hathaway. Hell, let him host next year!
Big surprises in the best actress and supporting actress category.
As i mentioned in another oscar thread, love the ABC?Disney product placement. Yeah, Patrick "Grey's Anatomy" Dempsey was in "Enchanted" so he had every reason to be there to introduce a song from that movie. But Miley Cyrus?
And why the Hell did Enchanted get three songs nominated for best song? No other friggin movie in 2007 had original music?
Is there any reason why they keep bringing Renee Zelweger and Cameron Diaz back year after year to present stuff? Besides the fact that thier hot, I mean.

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Films about psychopaths, greedy oilmen and corrupt lawyers failed to click with moviegoers, and they proved a turnoff to U.S. television viewers as this year's Oscars show hit record low ratings.
The 80th anniversary edition of the Academy Awards, dominated by European stars and films that played poorly at the box office, averaged 32 million viewers, entering the record books on Monday as the least watched Oscar telecast ever.
The national viewer tally reported by Nielsen Media Research for ABC's live, three-hour-plus telecast on Sunday was down about 1 million viewers from the previous record low, set in 2003 when the Oscars were presented just after the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq had begun.
The 2003 program was hosted by Steve Martin and featured the musical "Chicago" as best picture.
Sunday's broadcast, with comedian Jon Stewart making his second appearance as Oscar host, now ranks as the smallest U.S. TV audience for the Oscars since 1974, when actual viewer totals first became available.
The household rating, 18.7, also marks the lowest level by that measure going back to the first televised Oscars in 1953.
By contrast, the most watched Oscar broadcast on record was the 1998 show, when the box-office blockbuster "Titanic" sailed off with a record-tying 11 awards, including the prize for best picture. Some 55 million Americans tuned in that year.
Even that figure pales in comparison to the audience that tunes in annually to the National Football League championship Super Bowl game, which this year drew 97.5 million viewers

goes to show what promotion and hype can do. I also think it didn't help that there weren't any real blockbusters. Juno was the only film up for Best Picture that was a huge box office hit. In 1998, Titanic was so massive that I think it piqued people's interest to see if it'd win or not, I bet the same happened the years Star Wars and E.T. were nominated.

NEW YORK (Feb. 25) - Whoopi Goldberg seemed sad and choked up on "The View" Monday when her fellow co-hosts discussed how she was not included in a montage featuring Oscar hosts during the Academy Awards telecast.
The 52-year-old Goldberg has received two Oscar nominations, winning for her role as Oda Mae Brown in 1990's "Ghost." She hosted the event in 1994, 1996, 1999 and 2002. She did, however, appear as an Oscar winner in a separate montage Sunday night.
Goldberg appeared stumped that the academy would leave her out of the one clip, as well as repeat host Steve Martin.
"Maybe they accidentally lost a clip of you hosting. ... But I think it's wrong," Elisabeth Hasselbeck said. Joy Behar said "being slighted is never fun." Sherri Shepherd wondered if Goldberg had made someone mad.
"Undoubtedly," Goldberg said, smiling. "Undoubtedly I (bleeped) somebody off yet again. You know what, I don't - I don't know."
"Hey, we think you're a great host," reassured Barbara Walters, the creator of the ABC chatfest.
"I think we should do our own montage of you to make up for it," Hasselbeck said.
"This makes up for it," Goldberg responded, before getting up and kissing each co-host on the cheek. She and Walters embraced.

Sunday night's "In Memoriam" montage during the Oscar ceremony featured some emotional farewells to such stars as Heath Ledger and Suzanne Pleshette, as well as master director Ingmar Bergman. But on Monday morning several blogs (including TMZ and Perez Hilton) noted that one glaring omission appeared to be actor Brad Renfro, who was found dead of a heroin overdose on Jan. 15. He was 25.
When asked for an explanation as to why, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences said in a statement, "There are too many people to include everyone. We tried to represent all the branches of the Academy."

I think Heath's death far eclipsed Renfro as the "young actor cut short too early" since it was only about a week later, and that Heath was still a relevant actor at the time of his passing while Brad was seen as a former child star who had been gone the way of Corey Haim for the past five+ years. They probably forgot about Brad since Heath's death had all the attention

(Feb. 24) - Jennifer Garner got more than she bargained for when she met Gary Busey on the red carpet at the Academy Awards -- Busey's lips on her body.
Garner and best actress nominee Laura Linney were in the midst of an interview with E! host Ryan Seacrest when the notoriously out-there Busey charged up the red carpet yelling that he'd been wanting to meet Seacrest for years. After shaking hands with Seacrest, Busey congratulated Linney on her nomination with a kiss on the cheek, and then proceeded to embrace Garner and plant a kiss on her neck.
When Seacrest attempted to forge ahead with the interview, a clearly flustered Garner responded, "Ask me about getting kissed on the neck on the red carpet by this man ... That was nice!"
With Busey continuing to hover, Linney quickly extricated her friend from the uncomfortable situation, telling Seacrest that she and Garner had "secrets to tell."
Seacrest put an end to the episode by telling Busey, "I'll see you later at the party. You know the one." He then turned to the camera and confessed to an E! cohost that he had never before met Busey.
E! subsequently released a press release calling the incident "one of the most bizarre moments in red carpet history."

THE WORST OSCAR FASHIONS:
Worst Oscar fashion … the winners, please
By Marques Harper | Sunday, February 24, 2008, 09:12 PM
What was she thinking: Cameron Diaz
Has Diaz been watching too much “Project Runway”? In a pale pink Dior dress, Diaz’s look lacked vivid color, and her dress appeared as if “Project Runway’s” Rami Kashou draped pale pink fabric for a flowing effect around Diaz’s toned body.
Worst couple: Daniel Day-Lewis and Rebecca Miller
While his dark character was refreshingly menacing in “There Will Be Blood” Daniel Day-Lewis and his wife, Rebecca Miller, offered nightmarish looks on the red carpet. They obviously didn’t hire stylists when they pulled together their Oscar looks. What was Day-Lewis thinking by matching the brown piping of his tuxedo with brown tie-up shoes? And Miller with her gown trimmed with Christmas wreath-looking accents.
Worst Oscar look: Tilda Swinton
The Best Support Actress winner was a hot mess in a baggy black velvet dress instead of using bolder colors such as green or purples to play off her bright red hair.
Worst use of leopard print: Diablo Cody
The screenwriting nominee for “Juno” wore a flowing leopard print gown which showed off a large Varga girl tattoo on her arm, making her look less than flattering and Oscar worthy. She was once an exotic dancer.
Let me add my own worst fashion pick: JENNIFER HUDSON...Lordy, it looked like she was really pushing them puppies up into her face. You'd think she'd learn from her worst fashion pick from last year.

But people can't just "show up" for the Oscars, you have to be invited or be a nominee or a presenter.

Whoopi Goldberg's omission from an Oscar montage – perceived by her and others to be a slight that left the View host in tears – was "an absolute oversight," the award show's producer tells PEOPLE.
"No harm was intended, and I feel very, very badly that she was left out," Gil Cates said Tuesday. "I'm going to call her and tell her that."
Although described as a montage of hosts, the piece shown at Sunday night's telecast on ABC was actually "supposed to be a montage of 80 exciting moments of the Academy Awards" culled from hundreds of hours of footage, says Cates. "Basically, that was not a montage about hosts."
He noted that former host Steve Martin also wasn't in the montage.
Still, Cates said, "It was an absolute oversight" to leave out Goldberg, an Oscar winner and nominee who had hosted telecasts that Cates himself produced.
"I asked her to be on the show. She did it twice," he said. "She is a formidable talent."

The whole show was an "unknown" theme and "omissions" theme. Sonny and I were clueless as to the stars and the movies. Then you have people who were not part of the memorial tribute and question those who WERE PART OF IT and then we have the montage clips of past Oscar shows where Whoopi (the first woman to host the Oscars) be omitted from the clips. WTF??? WAS UP WITH THE OSCARS THIS YEAR???

Red-faced Oscars bosses had to make last-minute adjustments to their In Memoriam tribute to dead stars after realising they'd mixed up their actresses. The Academy Awards producers have been heavily criticised for leaving Brad Renfro out of the tribute segment and Whoopi Goldberg from an Oscars past glories celebration, but they almost had a bigger headache.
Oscars lead writer Bruce Vilanch tells E!, producers got late actress Laraine Day's tribute clip all wrong.
He reveals, "It was actually Claire Trevor (Day's The High and the Mighty co-star). It's something that Laraine Day's family would watch and say, 'Jeez, that's not Mom!' (But) it got fixed."
Trevor actually died in 2000.

I really don't think it was anybody in particular's fault. This show did look put together at the last minute, and it was.

It certainly was. I think they said they only had 3 weeks to put it together. Usually, we see Oscar hoopla at least two months (from the date the nominations are read) prior.
Like I said, they won't be using any clips from this year's Oscars for any future montage clips.
