a decent sitcom from the 1980's in syndication? too good to be true, I bet we won't even get to the non-DVD episodes, but I'm hoping.

It's good the show will be getting national exposure again. I wonder if this will help Sony get off its behind and release more seasons on DVD

This is Awsome News
Gosh, I love BET now.
It's been many, many years since DS aired regularly on a national channel. I believe the last time was on N@N in the 2000-2001 era. Or maybe it spent some time on TVLand since then?

Actually, I'm pretty sure the last time it was on national TV was in 2001-2002 on TNN, now Spike TV.
I am lucky enough to already have it on Peachtree and I've been recording them all incase the DVDs never get released.
Now, with it also on BET, I guess it's just the more the merrier :)
I was actually about to get BET off my digital tv because I have a package where you pick certain channels and I was thinking to replace BET since I watch it for a music video about 3 times a year lol.
Definetly keeping the channel now!

Great News about Different Strokes, great Addition by BET instead of the UPN/CW Leftovers. Can't wait to set the recorder

Ooooh yeah, I forgot all about it being on TNN. Actually, for a second, I forgot TNN even showed old TV shows after it stopped being The Nashville Network. If I remember right...there was DS, and "Three's Company," and "Newhart," and "WKRP in Cincinnati," and "The Wonder Years," and I even think I remember "Taxi" too.

BET didn't do that good of a job with 227 and Amen...they would like end the closing theme before it ended. But at least they aired the shows.
Here is more to wet all of your appetites...Diff'rent Strokes and Malcolm & Eddie are being added to weekdays, but there will be some more sitcoms coming in March during the weekends. I won't reveal what they are today, you'll have to wait until tomorrow on the blog, but Solomon will be happy tomorrow!
As for ION, you never know, they could air Diff'rent Strokes...it is possible. Raymond and Seinfeld are not what they are after, those would be impossible for them to get. Besides the MASH deal, their shows are shows that really haven't aired much lately (Drew Carey, Baywatch).

well, MASH is the all time most played out sitcom of the 70's, and you know the shows ION will sacrifice for MASH will be Alice and the sort, not the more common likes of Mama's Family, which aired on TBS every day for a decade before ION snatched it up.
If you're going to pick up a beloved 70's sitcom, why not pick one up that hasn't been played to death on fifty other channels in the past ten years? Plus, all 11 seasons of MASH are out on DVD, I don't think that between the DVD's and TV Land/Hallmark that there are many people out there craving more MASH. It's as bad as Seinfeld, Friends or Raymond.
Shows like Diff'rent Strokes or One Day At A Time are more along the lines what ION should aim for, shows that the fans don't have complete series sets on DVD and don't have three other channels to watch it on.

TNN never aired A Different World, but yes Kids Say did air. TNN also aired dramas like The Waltons, Miami Vice, Picket Fences, A-Team.
Yes, Diff'rent Strokes and Malcolm & Eddie will start with their pilots on Tuesday and will go in order. But you have to tune in, if you want this to last. We don't need another Family Ties, Hogan Family, Evening Shade incident here.

Hell Date is 3-4PM now this week, according to BET's official grids.
Next week (week of Feb. 25) BET lists DS 3-4pm, but they haven't listed episodes yet, so I'm assuming Hell Date will be slotted in again.

When you think about it, there couldn't be a better time to bring DS back. The 30th anniversary is coming up later this year, Gary Coleman was just in the news in recent days over getting married, Janet Jackson (Charlene) is about to release a new CD, etc...
I hope it does well enough that Sony will consider releasing season 3, which IMO was the start of the show's prime (I thought 80-83 was the show at it's best)

That is *awesome* news from BET!! REALLY great! Seriously, if someone had said, before the news about DS came out, that BET would be airing "Sanford" in the month of March, they would have been laughed to death.
I haven't seen either one of the later Sanford shows, so it'll be a real treat to see it. As for "Thea," me and my brother grew up watching that in its original run on ABC and then in reruns on BET in the 1990s, so it'll be great to see it again. The character of Thea was soooo similar to Roseanne, and the show should have lasted longer, IMO.

"Sony Pictures Television" that's what SPT stands for.
Sony's "Sony Pictures Television Shiny Bars of Boredom" Logo, almost much like Columbia-Tristar Television's "Boxes of Boredom" logo was when Sony still kept the Columbia name around.

Nice Job by BET, eps ran about 22 min, and the closing credits didn't have any voiceovers or shrinked by a Promo. Good Treatment and I'm looking forward to the seasons not on DVD

Just got a confirmation for next week (week of Feb. 25), Diff'rent Strokes will not be 3-4pm, but it will air in its 9-10am slot of course. Also next week, the show will start to air on Saturday mornings as well from 9-10am (repeat of Monday's airings). Also, Malcolm & Eddie will air Saturdays starting that week, 10-11am and 4-5pm.
Thea and Sanford will start with their pilot episodes.
We will have more on BET in the blog either today or tomorrow. Get ready for some marathon action for one or two of these new shows!

even tho AITF isn't an African-American show, I don't see why it shouldn't make the station for that reason. I know a lot of African-Americans who love the show because Archie's bigotry is so over the top that it's entertaining. That and Jeffersons would make a great back to back hour of television on TV One or something. Better than the UPN crap they air.

I agree. There are some UPN sitcoms I liked (mainly The Parkers, Girlfriends in the early years) but Eve was not one of them.

really? I actually like season 2 of FOL better than 3 and 4. 3 and 4 had way too much Cousin Geri and were the heaviest on the VSE's. I prefer the 1983-1987 episodes, the last season just felt like a show past it's day

I think the 2nd season of The Facts Of Life was one of the best the show ever had (and it was a short season). As for Diff'rent Strokes: I always thought the 3rd-6th seasons were the best. IMO, it stayed consistently good until Sam and his mother(s) came...

When I think of the definitive FOL, I think of the years where the girls were working in the cafeteria and Mrs. G was the dietician, which would be seasons two, three, and four. The Edna's Edibles season (or was it two seasons?) come in verrrrrrrry close. I can take or leave the first season. I enjoyed the many dynamics of all the various girls, but yeah, there were definitely too many. The Over Our Heads years...eh....there are some really good episodes in there, but also some really dull ones. I will say one thing, the show ended at the right time, I think. They covered just about everything a show with its premise should cover.
As for DS, I like pretty much everything from the beginning until Sam and Maggie showed. Honestly, I actually like the season with Dixie Carter as Maggie. The final season, though...ugh. Not Mary Ann Mobley's fault, just the fault of the network change and the fact that Gary Coleman was getting older.
Dean Winchester
02-24-2008, 04:34 PM
I do agree that the "classic" period of FOL is seasons 2-4 with the girls working at Eastland and living over the cafeteria, but I prefer the girls as they got older. I love EE and OOH, even tho I admit the Over Our Heads episodes depend on how much of a tolerance for 80's cheese as you can have

Yes, BET had their upfront yesterday, but they would not announce older sitcoms or reruns in their upfront. That is not BET's purpose...they are not a channel focusing on older reruns. Here is what they DID announce:
BET Networks' Upfront '08 Presentation is All About 'Connection You Can Feel!'
BET Unveils New Animated Series, Compelling News Programs, Hilarious Comedies, As Well as Returning Hit Franchises and Mega-Specials
BET J Strengthens Its Commitment to Lifestyle Programming with Three New Shows
BET Networks Also Announces "YOU(th) Vote!" - New Election Initiative Focused on Raising Voter Awareness and Participation Among Black Youth
NEW YORK, April 17 -- At its Upfront '08 presentation, BET Networks, the leading media and entertainment brand for African Americans and consumers of Black culture, touted its unique position as the most consistent and effective solution for advertisers to reach that coveted audience. Set in an election-themed show at New York City's Manhattan Center Studios with the campaign tagline "Connection You Can Feel!", the company reinforced its leadership role through new programming announcements, an overview of its digital strategy, and the unveiling of its new pro-social election initiative.
"As the No. 1 media destination for African Americans and consumers of Black culture, BET Networks offers our audience an engaging and relevant experience that truly resonates with them," said Debra L. Lee, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, BET Networks. "We continue to make strides in our original programming and digital offerings, and are further strengthening our commitment to providing quality content wherever our audience wants it." "BET Networks is committed to creating new extensions of our brand and identifying the most innovative and exciting opportunities for both our viewers and our advertising partners," said Scott Mills, President and Chief Operating Officer, BET Networks. "We've done so through our international expansion with our recent launch of BET in the United Kingdom, our new integrated marketing function and new digital efforts. As our footprint grows, we're looking forward to building an even deeper connection with our audience."
BET announced several new original series, including: THE BLACK PANTHER, an animated series about the first Black superhero and created in partnership with Marvel Comics; BRUTHA, a new docu-drama following the lives of five brothers in a singing group working with producer Jermaine Dupri; and 106 & GOSPEL, the inspirational version of the top music countdown series of all time, 106 & PARK. Returning series include AMERICAN GANGSTER, SUNDAY BEST, and the #1 original series in BET history, KEYSHIA COLE: THE WAY IT IS. BET Networks also announced its new YOU(th) VOTE! initiative, which is a multiplatform effort to encourage Black youth to discuss, debate and actively participate in the presidential election process.
In addition to its programming and pro-social news, BET Networks shared results from a research study of 5,000 African-American adults from Simmons Market Research Bureau. The study found that BET viewers are 21% more ad receptive when they watch ads on BET, and 31% more ad receptive when they see ads on BET.com, versus other networks and sites.
Louis Carr, BET Networks President of Media Sales, attributes the Simmons study's findings to the unique connection that BET has with its consumers. "BET Networks is the effective and reliable solution for advertisers to reach the coveted African American audience and consumers of Black culture," he said. "We are the only television network that provides the advertising community and Black America with a consistent dialogue across multiple formats and demographics every single day of the year."
BET remains the No. 1 television network in both broadcast and cable for its target demographic of African Americans ages 18-34. In 2007, BET boasted the No. 1 and No. 2 cable reality shows among Black households, thanks to KEYSHIA COLE: THE WAY IT IS and COLLEGE HILL. In addition, the second season of KEYSHIA COLE stands as BET's highest-rated original series in network history, with the series posting 44% gains in ratings since its first season.
"We've had fantastic original programming success stories during primetime, and the next step in our strategy is to create even more hits throughout the other parts of the day," said Reginald Hudlin, President of Entertainment, BET. "We'll continue to roll out more weekly and daily shows that our audiences crave."
BET Networks has also further expanded its offerings through its BET Digital Media Group. BET.com extends the on-air experience online, so viewers can continue to engage with the programs they love. With BET Mobile, the company offers mobile video capability that meets the needs of its tech-savvy users who want to send, receive and watch video on their cell phones. In addition, BET Video on Demand allows viewers to access their favorite BET programming whenever they want it. Also, the BET Vertical Ad Network allows advertising clients to reach beyond the BET brand to other targeted websites for urban and African American consumers. Since its launch in January, the ad network has reached 10 million unique users on more than 250 websites.
"Our audience is focused on the latest in communications, information and entertainment," said Denmark West, President of Digital Media, BET Networks. "We're meeting their needs through our increasing emphasis on news, our developments of extensions and communities based on our programming franchises, and our use of mobile applications to connect our audience to our programs and each other."

For those of you recording every Diff'rent Strokes airing on BET or wanting to watch every single episode, this is an important alert!
BET is now airing four episodes a day rather than two episodes with an encore! So you'll need to watch or tape/DVR both 9-10am and 3-4pm now. It started yesterday and we didn't get the notice until after 5PM, so we couldn't alert you in time. So here is the episode schedule reflecting this change that started yesterday:
Wednesday, April 30
9:00AM #505 "Substitute Teacher"
9:30AM #506 "The Peacemaker"
Special time 4:00PM #507 "Older Woman"
Special time 4:30PM #508 "Memories"
Thursday, May 1
9:00AM #509 "A Case of Over Exposure"
9:30AM #510 "Push Comes to Shove"
3:00PM #511 "The Executives"
3:30PM #512 "Santa's Helper"
Friday, May 2
9:00AM #513 "A Growing Problem"
9:30AM #514 "Parents Have Rights Too"
3:00PM #516 "The Bicycle Man, Part 1"
3:30PM #517 "The Bicycle Man, Part 2"
So, if you watched/taped the last marathon you didn't have to worry about the first afternoon episodes since it aired in the marathon...but #508 ("Memories") was all-new to BET. I missed that one also because of this.
Also, starting this week BET will add Saturday airings. See the blog for more info, along with more DS info, but here is a sneak peek for this Saturday:
Saturday, May 2
12:00PM #515 "Independent Women"
12:30PM #518 "Family On Ice"
Four episodes a day (Mon-Sat) continues until further notice.

I don't watch DS much on BET. I have been watching ADW, though. I don't care much for the season 1 episodes myself, plus I own them on DVD. Looking forward to seasons 2 and on, though. Let's just hope the show makes it that long.

I would be surprised if ADW lasted a long time on BET. I'm surprised DS has lasted this long. ADW is more suited for Oxygen or TBS

That's where it needs to stay because I don't think a lot of women from 25-54 watches BET. Black or White
I can't see Black Female in the 13-23 age bracket tuning into Different World.

And how do you know the age demographic of the people who watch BET?
BTW, I don't care for BET...UNLESS they are airing something good. I am sure that is how other people are when it comes to watching shows. If I am glancing at the channels and see a program I like, I will tune in. I think BET is hoping to gather a different demographic by airing ADW. Also, I think the mere fact it is a Bill Cosby spin-off and has black actors as the stars, is really the only reason they brought it to their station.

Because BET just started adding sitcoms that's not GHETTO so it will probably take years for BET to not be seen as a GHETTO NETWORK geared toward teenagers
