Mitch's Life

Starring Hugh Laurie as Mitch Pierson, a happily married fortysomething financial advisor from Denver. Mitch lives with his loving wife, Denise (Marcia Cross) and their three children: the 21-year-old Alec (Chace Crawford), the 19-year-old Stephen (Zac Efron), and the 11-year-old Hannah (Ryan Newman). The cute and inquistivie Hannah is in the 5th grade, who wants nothing more than to make sure everyone is happy. The popular and uber-confident Stephen is a recent high school graduate, who is attending community college after losing his UCLA basketball scholarship (due to his cocky, hotheaded attitude out on the court). The easygoing, former ladies man Alec is currently attending the same community college after taking two years off to find himself and recover from a past tragedy that forever has changed his look upon life. A month after his high school graduation, Alec's high school sweetheart girlfriend was killed in an intense car crash, caused by a drunk driver who hit them, and to make matters worse, Alec was driving with his girlfriend in passenger seat and he couldn't help but just watch as his love of his live passes on.

Also to add to Mitch's family is Mitch's younger sister, Paula (Kathy Najimy), his brother-in-law, Jeff (Brad Garrett), and his 21-year-old nephew, Kyle (David Blue). Paula and Jeff are really close-knit with Mitch and Denise (and kids). Kyle and Alec are lifelong best friends, since they were in diapers, due to only being a month and half apart. And there is Denise's longtime widowed mother, Barbara (Shirley Knight) who shares a bittersweet relationship with her daughter. Barbara is a loving, caring, and supportive mother, yet can be meddlesome, opinionated, and controlling at times--which drives Denise up the wall. Then we have, Allison Sanders (Emma Roberts), who is Stephen's younger girlfriend who's only 17 and still in high school. Allison comes from a really wealthy family, both her parents are doctors and she is a spoiled only child. Lastly, Mitch and Paula's parents, Jack and Marilyn (Robert Wagner, Cheryl Ladd) often drop by their homes and often-times cause more stress or problems than needed for their two children. Mitch's relationship with his dad, Jack is something left to be desired. As where, his relationship with his mom, Marilyn makes up for it, which will make things much more difficult when Marilyn comes clean with her children about a secret that she's been keeping to herself for a while, until now.

Ep1: Pilot Episode:
It's Mitch's birthday. Denise and Paula plan a big shindig for Mitch, who hates his birthdays. While at Mitch's party, a number of arguments brew amongst the Pierson clan. Denise and Barbara bicker over how Barbara's birthday cake was unnecessary when Denise made one, which doesn't quite size up to Barbara's. Alec and Stephen get into it, when Alec speaks out about Stephen and Allison's affections sickening him and everyone else, and Stephen retaliates back with commenting about Alec's jealousy of him and Allison since Brooke's death (which doesn't settle well with Alec). Also, Mitch becomes upset with his dad, after Jack doesn't show up to his own son's party until it's almost over and doesn't even give Mitch an excuse for being so late, thus upsetting Paula and Marilyn as well.

Ep2: Confessions Of A Mother:
Marilyn solemnly arranges to have sit-down dinner with Jack, Mitch, Paula, Denise, and Jeff. During dinner, Marilyn makes an announcement about her and Jack hiding a secret from the four of them. Marilyn reveals the fact that she was diagnosed with breast cancer over a month ago and never told Mitch or Paula, who are floored and a little upset for not being told sooner. Marilyn, then, tells them the other half of the shocking news, that Marilyn's doctor has only predicted her to live another six months, thus being so far along. Jeff and Denise, equally devastated, try to console and comfort their spouses who are outraged and greatly upsetted by the news. Elsewhere, Alec, Kyle, and Hannah go to visit Brooke's gravesite on the what-would-have-been her birthday. Stephen was suppose to go along with the three of them, but never showed up and was over at Allison's, which infuriates Alec.

Ep3: Mother-Daughter Brunch:
Denise decides to attend a mother-daughter brunch with Hannah, Barbara, Paula, and Marilyn. The five ladies have a great brunch and great time for talking with just the girls. Barbara, who lost her late husband to cancer, offers support to Marilyn and Paula (thus causing Denise to remincise and remember how when her dad died, Barbara clammed up and didn't offer any support to Denise, but now is openly supportive.) Elsewhere, Mitch goes to have a talk with Jack about how come he didn't break his mom's promise and tell them about this serious news. Jack feels Mitch is out-of-line and shouldn't be taking out his frustrations out on him, which irks and angers Mitch even moreso. Meanwhile, Stephen learns that Allison's parents are going to be going on vacation for a week next month, and he decides that he and Allison should utilize that 'alone time' the best way they know.
