Actually the twist was recorded in 1958, but not released, then a year later was released by Hank Ballard in 1959' as the B-side to "Teardrops On Your Letter" so, Chubby Checker's version was indeed a cover!

I love a lot of the covers Linda Ronstadt did better than the originals, like "Hurt So Bad", "You're No Good", "Blue Bayou", "Back in the USA", "Heat Wave", etc. I'll also choose Sheena Easton's version of "Just One Smile" over Gene Pitney's (though he was an awesome artist). I also prefer Van Halen's versions of "You Really Got Me" and "Pretty Woman" to the originals.

I also prefer Van Halen's Pretty Woman to his, especially the version that has Intruder seguing into it. Diver Down was probably their most forgettable Roth album, but that track always stood out.

I also loved Linda Ronstadt's take on Blue Bayou

Diver Down is with the exception of the Gary Cherone album in 1998, the weakest of all Van Halen albums. Oddly enough, the album's three good tracks are covers.

I always thought Diver Down was a quicky throw-together ploy at reclaiming the commercial success that Van Halen lost when Fair Warning was a poor seller. Except FW was a great record, DD was really forgettable. At least the ploy worked since DD did sell a lot of copies thanks to Pretty Woman, and set the stage for 1984

You're right. That is exactly what Diver Down was meant to be. With the exception of the Cherone album, Fair Warning is their poorest seller. Even after 26 years it has only sold about 2 million copies. It's a real shame becasue Fair Warning is a great album. It is my favorite of the Roth era albums and my third favorite VH album period under 5150 and For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge. I think that anyonw here who loves great music and doesn't have a copy of Fair Warning, they should go out and buy themselves one.

I think recent Celine is far worse than her 90's output. Sample the One Heart album (where she tries and fails to be a dance diva, and also works with Max Martin, the guy who gave us Backstreet Boys and Britney's early hits) or Taking Chances (Celine tries to rock) albums. My Heart Will Go On was played to death, but it's Imagine next to some of the crap she's put out in recent years

Hey, I am a huge Carpenters fan. Me and my salt sister Monika LOVE US SOME CARPENTERS!!!! :snob: ;)
I know, The Carpenters have been "cool" ever since the early 90's when that "If I Had A Carpenter" CD came out and suddenly all the music snobs suddenly changed their mind on them. Same thing happened with ABBA and The Bee Gees, people who at one point bashed them suddenly had an apparition and realized they really loved the music all this time they were bashing it for "coolness" sake.

I dunno what it is, but I can listen to a lot of dead singers, but I always have a hard time with Carpenters knowing how many sad songs they have, and the fact that Karen's death was such a tragedy (but yet I have no trouble listening to Lennon, Elvis, Nirvana, Laura Branigan, etc... all they all died young, suddenly and tragically). Great voice, great songs but I usually tend not to listen because it's a little too much.

I agree. Well, the fact that the original was by Manilow says it all

Hey now! Fanilow here!!:D I happen to think that Barry's version is beautiful. One of my favorite songs from him. I don't think I'm familiar with Donna Summer's version. Is it an upbeat version? Because I've heard a dance-mix version of it on the radio one time. I don't think it was Donna though.

I am a closet Manilow fan too. I have at least four of his songs on my player. Stuff from the 70's. When my boyfriend saw the songs on the real one player he nearly choked from laughing. :snob:

I need to make a correction to my original post above. Tanya Tucker was the
first artist to record "Delta Dawn" (in 1972); Helen Reddy's version came out in
1973.

Carrie Underwood's version of 'I told You So' (originally sung by Randy Travis) is good. Altho I have yet to hear Randy's version, my mom thought she did a good job, but nothing tops Randys.

Speaking of Barry Manilow, One of my favorite songs of his is "Ships" but I've never heard Ian Hunter's original.

I am definately not a "Fanilow", but one song I do like from him is I'm Your Man from 1986, I liked the dance-pop direction with him

I think the Mamas & Papas' version of "Dancing In the Street" is way better than Martha Reeves & Vandellas' original. M&P's rendition has a fantastic bass line and a passionate yet fun lead vocal by Mama Cass.

the worst version of that song certainly had to be David Bowie and Mick Jagger. Bowie is my second favorite male solo artist and I love the Stones too but together they were a toxic combo

Ouch

I'm not a big fan of solo Mick and I've never liked David Bowie, but I actually really like their version of "Dancing In the Street". I even like the music video.

I really don't know much about the Mamas & Papas, except that Michelle Phillips was part of the group and I know her from a really great first season episode of Star Trek-The Next Generation called "We'll Always Have Paris", and that Michelle is the mother of MacKenzie Phillips who played Julie on One Day At A Time.

My favorite version of "Dancing In the Street" is the 1982 Van Halen version from the Diver Down album. I know that the Van Halen brothers and Michael Anthony hate the song, but I love it. David Lee Roth seemed to be having a lot of fun with that song.

wow, you definately should invest in checking some of Bowie's work out, I bet you'd like him. He had two duets with John Lennon on the Young Americans album from 1975. Even tho he's like Prince where you really can't buy one studio album and say it's representative of his work, because he kept changing his style.

Actually, Michelle was Mackenzie's stepmother. Mackenzie is the daughter of John Phillips and his first wife. Michelle was John's second wife, and together they had Chynna, the Phillips in Wilson Phillips.

I have actually heard quite a bit of Bowie as my sister is a really big fan of his. The only Bowie I really like are "Let's Dance" and as I mentioned a few posts ago, "Dancing In the Street". Still, I seem to recall making a thread about two years ago saying that Prince was overrated and now I love his music, so you never know.

By the way, I love your avatar, John. :D

You love to prove me wrong, don't you? Well, one of these days I am going to come across a mistake you made and you are never going to live it down. ;)

As I said in another thread, you sure do know your pop culture. John Phillips is the reason that MacKenzie got into drugs, isn't he? I think I read somewhere that he used to take her to parties and that is where she was exposed to drugs. It was the same thing with Ryan O'Neil and his daughter. Even though I have heard next to nothing from the Mamas and the Papas, I really do like their song "California Dreaming", which appears on the Forrest Gump soundtrack. It is one of my favorite songs on that soundtrack along with "For What It's Worth" by Buffalo Springfield, "Break on Through" by the Doors, "Aquarius/Let the Sunshine In" by the Fifth Dimension and "Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head" by B.J. Thomas (originally from my favorite western, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid). I've never really like the film Forrest Gump, but I really like the soundtrack CD.

I'm not sure what Bowie you've heard, but the stuff from 1970-1980 is far superior to the 1980's MTV pop hits, so if you've only heard the MTV stuff, you've really missed out because his 70's material is phenomenal. His latter music from the past dozen or so years is pretty good too.

thanks, I've been watching FOL a lot lately with the DVD's I acquired so I figured to make a FOL avatar, haha.

I also love "Let's Dance". One time I was driving home from work when it came on over the radio. I was moving along to the beat and really getting into it when I had to stop at a red light. The guy in the car next to me in the left lane looked at me like I'd grown another head. It was fun, though, since I'd had a pretty stressful work day and it really boosted my spirits. :D

Mike, you should really check out the Mamas & Papas. Their harmonies and John Phillips' songwriting were amazing. I'd check out Mamas & Papas Gold. It has all the hits and some terrific album cuts/B-sides. He and Mackenzie did kick their addictions (Mackenzie is now a licensed drug counselor) but he needed to have a liver transplant in the early 1990s and finally passed on from heart failure in 2001. He and Michelle were able to resolve their problems and say goodbye before it was too late (they'd split up in 1968, right around the time the band broke up).

Laura Branigan sang an awesome, torchy cover of "Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow" for her 1984 album Self-Control. It's just her and a piano - and it's easily the best version of the song I've ever heard, even though I also really like the original by the Shirelles.

The Beatles: "It's All Too Much" was covered by Steve Hillage. "I'm Down" was
covered by Adrian Belew.
Bob Dylan: Jimi Hendrix and then Dave Mason covered "All Along the Watchtower." Jimi Hendrix covered "Drifter's Escape." Johnny Winter covered "Highway 61 Revisited." The Byrds covered "My Back Pages."
