Legendary singer Patti LaBelle has blasted female pop stars such as Britney Spears and Jessica Simpson, insisting they don't have the talent to achieve lasting careers in the music industry.
The 63-year-old found fame with girl group The Bluebelles when she was still in her teens, but believes her career has spanned decades because she has genuine vocal ability.
She says, "I think those girls are not going to be here very long. They have no talent. They are not like the Gladys Knight's and the Dionne Warwick's."

She should be saying that abt the people from American Idol. At least Britney and Jessica have paid some dues and will indeed be paying more as time goes on. Britney and Jessica started out as children and worked hard to get where they got. They weren't handed a million dollar contract for appearing on a talent show and being chosen by the public.

NO talent? That's a matter of opinion. LaBelle isn't the least bit gracious or humble. How many decades ago did she have her last hit? You gotta love these has-been actors and singers who knock the younger performers.
I think Britney would have lasted decades if she had kept herself together. She was a good entertainer, along the lines of Madonna. Even if someone doesn't have an excellent voice, the fact that they can entertain and put on a great show, is a talent in itself.

I agree.
Britney has a beautiful voice. Unique. What she is going through now has no bearing on how she sounds or how well she did before. She is having her drama and needs to straighten herself up. I am no Jessica fan, but I can say the girl can sing. I believe Britney can make a comeback. Where does Patti come off saying they have no talent? Like I said, she should be saying that abt people who are handed music contracts left and right.

Ms. LaBelle is entitled to her opinion just like you and I and that's her opinion. I agree with her remarks - she can sing circles around Britney and company IMO. Ms. LaBelle had her first charting hit in 1962 and most recent one in 2005, albeit in recent years her hits have been on the R&B charts only and have gotten airplay on mainly R&B stations. She's anything but a has been, she currently has a successful cooking show on TV One and recently released her third cook book and continues to tour every year. She still looks and sounds great for her age.
Having been a Patti LaBelle fan for over 30 years, her comments are way out of character for her. I can't recall her ever slamming another singer in public before. When I worked in radio, I had the chance to meet and interview her a few times and in person she was one of the nicest celebrities I met. One time she even made dinner for our entire crew lol

That is great to hear. She has always appeared to be nice lady and very funny too. I am taken aback by her comments. Like you said, it seems out of character for her to say such things. I am assuming the comments are true and if they are, I think it is a shame that she would go as low as to make such comments regarding a couple of singers who have proven their singing ability and the ability to sell records.

Low and classless remarks. This usually stems from jealousy. She's getting old, and I haven't heard a hit from her in two decades and 70 pounds ago. Okay, my bad. So of course, she knocks the hot and young perfomers of today. Ms. Has-been. :thumbsdow

Patti LaBelle speaks out on Celine Dion, race and record sales
By THE CANADIAN PRESS Mon Nov 26, 11:00 AM PST
MONTE CARLO, Monaco - R&B legend Patti LaBelle says one of the biggest obstacles she's had to face in her career has been watching friend and fellow diva Celine Dion soar up the charts with a song she recorded first.
LaBelle tells the online magazine MonacoRevue.com that racism in the music industry is what kept her from reaching the same heights with the single "If You Asked Me To."
Dion's 1992 rendition soared to number 4 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, while LaBelle's version three years earlier peaked at number 79.
LaBelle says Dion had the sales "because she's a white girl" and that people pay more respect to white artists who sing well than black women.
Nevertheless, she went on to refer to Dion as a friend, and said that she's satisfied with her lengthy career and is grateful for the blessings in her life.
Both LaBelle and Dion were honoured with career achievement awards at the World Music Awards in Monaco earlier this month.
"Why do I think Celine had the sales and I didn't? Because she's a white girl," LaBelle tells the Canadian-owned magazine based in Monaco.
"You want me to be honest? That's why."
"People pay more respect to white artists who sing well before they do black women," she continues in the question-and-answer piece, posted Nov. 23.
"I've been singing for 45 years and that's an obstacle that I'm still ... I'm getting over it because I'm fabulous. You know, so you can't beat me up. You can't make me feel less than I am because whenever I get the microphone I'm gonna show you who I am. But the industry is very racist."

well, in all fairness, Patti is in her mid-60's. US radio is very ageist especially against female performers, you couldn't pay radio to spin Madonna's last album even tho the album went to #1 and sold over a million copies because they won't dare touch a 49 year old female artist. Patti, Diana, Cher, Dionne, Tina, Aretha, Babs, etc...., all the divas that have been around since the 1960's are never going to score serious hits in the US again (in the UK it's a different story) and it has to do with their age, nothing at all to with whatever quality their recent music may or may not have. Patti still does well with the r&b crowd, which is the best she can possibly do at this point because she is deemed "too old" for youth-obsessed top 40 radio to ever give her another New Attitude or On My Own no matter how good the song is.

lol, ok Patti does sound really pathetic there. I know she's been around a really long time but the industry has totally changed. MTV-2 doesn't even play anything music oriented anymore for the most part, but the one thing from their old "music days" they haven't eschewed is "Sucka Free Sundays", which is a day devoted to nothing but hip hop. In order to get US radio airplay, all the pop artists have had to call Timbaland and Pharrell and the sort up to give their music a "hip makeover" in order to score hits. I actually like what Timbaland can bring to the table because he has a nice sound but how freaking racist is a music industry where everyone from Justin Timberlake to Madonna to Duran Duran to even Bjork (someone who usually avoids anything mainstream) has worked with the man?
Things were different in the 60's when Patti started out, but I'd argue that the present-day US music industry is perhaps one of the least racist industries around at this point. Hip hop and r&b dominates and the only way POP artists can get airplay on POP stations is by updating their sound to be more urban, case in point... Nelly Furtado.

She's right, a lot of these people out today are very mediocre and probably won't even be heard of in 10 or maybe even 5 years.
And Celine Dion's version of "If You Asked Me To" can't even touch Patti's version! ;)

This line of reasoning makes no sense to me. What on earth would these "pop tarts" have that would make Patti jealous? Youth, maybe, but that's about it...certainly not money and certainly not more talent than Patti already has, and certainly not attention. And the way youth is looking in the music business these days, I don't even think that's something to want. Someone like Patti has had a long, illustrious career and at her age of retirement she doesn't need another hit single. That's what working hard and being her age means. She can retire if she wants, or she can keep touring and performing and doing what she loves if she wants. It doesn't matter because she has that choice, because her body of work still has more than respectable sales, even the material from the sixties.
I think Patti's original comments had less to do with some of the younger performers much publicized troubles (but it's interesting that some of you immediately went to that) and more to do with the fact that they do not have the staying power or the talent to achieve what she and many others have achieved by the time they reach the age of retirement. And she is right. Yes, some of the younger performers have more talent than others, but it's not an unheard of opinion that many of the current pop singers don't have to have as much singing talent to make it big in that business. And actual singing talent is what is going to give them the staying power to do this long after the physical body has given up. Sorry guys, but I just don't think some of these younger performers have that, and I think that was Patti's point.

I'm rooting for Britney myself, same as I was for Whitney. It's always sad when performers self-destruct and ruin great careers. She's young enough to rebound (hear that LaBelle, lol). Britney worked hard to get where she was, and she does have talent. She's an excellent performer. I don't think I've ever heard Jessica Simpson sing, but my younger niece always liked her.

I agree on both ends. Patti certainly has a right to her opinion, but it probably wasn't the smartest thing to single anybody out. Personally, I believe Britney Spears is much ado about nothing. She has absolutely no talent as a singer, she's never written any of her songs, she's never produced or played instruments, even what she was good at (dancing and making decent music videos), she's given up on lately and has totally done a half-assed job recently. There's no redeeming talent about her, a lot of people waited years and years thinking she was going to pull this Madonna-like evolution and prove all the critics wrong about her, but it's been almost a decade and she hasn't changed at all, except only for the worse. I remember awhile back, someone compared Celine and Britney by stating the following: If you gave Celine Britney's voice, she would be nobody and would be one of those American Idol contestents who gets laughed off the stage in tryouts, while if you gave Britney Celine's voice, she would've been a star regardless. That proves the point you and Patti both made. Female singers are expected to be sexy first, talented second. There isn't so much of a burden when it comes to male artists unless you're a teen heartthrob type singer.
But singling anyone out by name is only going to just piss the fanbases of said artists off, and makes you look tacky. A lot of people have cited they believe Janet's last album failed as badly as it did because her boyfriend/producer ran his mouth bashing Madonna during promotion for the album... Madonna and Janet have been pretty much side by side for the past 20 years and share a lot of mutual fans, so a lot of Madonna fans were turned off by JD's mouth and didn't buy the album

OMG I cannot believe she, of all people, is using the f***ing race card!!!! What a joke.
Celine's version, I preferred MUCH BETTER than Patti's and it has ABSOLUTELY NOTHING TO DO WITH THE COLOR OF CELINE'S SKIN. What is her skin color anyway? I never noticed. I am color-blind. I hear music, I hear talent, I hear uniqueness and quality. I hear Patti sing and it is beautiful, unique and all her own. Same with Celine and any other singer I love.
WTF??? is wrong with you Patti????? Sounds like she has been brain-washed by those thug rappers.

I agree with Janice that she could've phrased it with more tact, but there is so much more emphasis on looks than on actual talent these days.
Exactly, and I think that is Patti's point...what happens when the looks and the talent that revolves around the physical body fades? We have nothing left that will sustain a long career in this business. That's all.

exactly, we're seeing this happen right now with Jennifer Lopez and Britney Spears. J. Lo's getting "too old" and Britney has lost 99% of her sex appeal, and both of them are flopping right now because neither of them had enough to carry them past the sex symbol days. As opposed to female artists like Aretha, Tina, Patti and Cher who had some of their biggest success AFTER they hit their 40th birthday.

J-Ho is a flop no matter what. Whether she is gorgeous or not doesn't make her a singer. She can't sing, period. Thank all that computer technology for that voice. You won't see her sing WITHOUT back-up singers, without music, etc.
Britney was a young girl when she had her first hit. She grew up and developed into a woman and the record companies and I am sure, her mother helped with that sex symbol status and harped on that. Britney has a pretty voice, the girl can sing. It is being pushed to the back-burner by all that grittiness and sexiness that is taking the forefront. It was alright, for a while, now it is all abt "sex appeal." Real talent will keep you going that's for sure. I believe Britney can keep her career going for a long time, she just needs to clean up her personal self first.

I don't think Britney's voice is all that much hotter than J. Lo's to be honest. It doesn't help matters that she has a phobia about singing live in public, which makes me wonder if her "real voice" is even worse than when it's studio because she always lipsynchs. Christina could totally sing Britney off the stage IMO.

Christina rocks!!!! She can sing with or without music backing her up. Also, she can sing with the best of them. You will never see Tony Bennett sing with J-ho.
My friend's ex-husband has a music studio and he showed me how such singers such as J-ho "sing." He had a friend of his who can't sing for sh*t, sing a song and with all this technology stuff, he was able to make this guy sound GREAT! We had talked abt J-ho's inability to sing and he wanted to show me how the studio makes her sound good. That is why when it comes to singers, unless I hear them sing WITHOUT MUSIC AND ALL THAT BACK-UP STUFF, it only tells me they can't sing. You will never see J-ho sing acapella.;)

I would agree. I guess Britney's voice is an acquired taste, because I don't hear talent there either. Jessica Simpson's voice is a little better, however, Christina is someone who we absolutely will still be listening to 40 years from now. As long as she doesn't mess it up she's got what it takes to go far on her voice long after the looks and the body have faded.

People have different tastes. I do know that Britney has legions of fans, who would welcome her back with open arms, should she get her act together. It goes beyond that anyway. She is (or was) a fantastic entertainer, and that counts for a lot. She's still very young, and I just have a feeling that she'll be back on top. Not everyone can sing like Streisand or Sinatra. Last I heard, Wayne Newton was the biggest draw in Las Vegas. If he's not now, he was for over 20 years. It's not so much his voice, but his ability to entertain.

well, you don't necessarily need a great singing voice, but Britney brings NOTHING to the table. Even if one isn't a great vocalist, they could be a great songwriter, they might do a good job doing behind the scenes production work, etc... Britney is none of those things, she can't sing, she doesn't write any of her songs, she pretty much does nothing but sings the songs given to her, and even her ability to entertain is questionable at this point. The two things people used to know they could depend on Britney to do well have been shot to hell, the Gimme More video looks like the making of a tacky 976 sex number, and you could find old women in nursing homes who could've put a more energetic performance into the VMA fiasco.
You don't really need a great voice IMO. Madonna and Janet Jackson (at least until 2001, she's really lost her way in the past few years, the Super Bowl fiasco was only one of many things lately) are two female artists who people were really predicting Britney would follow the footsteps of early on, who don't have the greatest voices but were able to triumph and prevail regardless. Unlike Britney, Madonna and Janet have always had a hand in the songwriting process and both are known to work really closely with their producers (especially Madonna in the past ten years). They let it be known they weren't just going to be pop stars, they were going to take charge of their careers.
From day one, a lot of people had their eye on Britney because early on, she really did remind people of Madonna at the start of her career. However, it seemed like people put too much faith into Spears because she has yet to evolve in any way. When you compare Madonna and Britney at the same points in their careers, Madonna was backlashing with the Sex book fiasco, much like Britney is backlashing today. But in between that, she had already put out "Like A Prayer", which was a very well-reviewed album, and she had already flirted with big band with "I'm Breathless" and even detoured a bit into jazz-flavored dance music with "Erotica" and even if her career had ended right there, she had accomplished a lot. Britney is still recording the same bubblegum pop she recorded in 1998 and none of her albums have really been viewed as more than vehicles for a few good singles (as opposed to Madonna, whose albums are generally well-regarded on their own). It says a lot that Madonna went through a divorce and gave us "Like A Prayer" and experienced childbirth and gave us "Ray Of Light", the two albums that are generally regarded as her best works, whereas Britney got divorced and had kids and has become the new Anna Nicole Smith. She really could've stepped up to the plate and delivered a solid album that showed the world that it's time to take her seriously, but instead we get Gimme More.
I liked a few of her songs back in the day but I've been totally turned off to her after everything that's happened in the past year. I believe that Beyonce is to her what Madonna was to Cyndi Lauper in the 80's. Everyone was so sure that Cyndi was going to be the next big pop queen who would still have a relevant career 10-15 years later while Madonna was some fad, much like how people though Destiny's Child would have a few hit songs and vanish. But yet Beyonce is the one who has really become pop royalty in the past few years, having the career people thought Britney was gonna have. Beyonce is one of the most powerful female singers around right now and starred in an Oscar-nominated movie and even has her own cell phone, etc... Everyone thought this was Britney's future but instead Beyonce is the one who proved the skeptics wrong and really became the true icon.

but Britney brings NOTHING to the table.
Which is your opinion, of course. What I'm saying is that many many people love Britney, her voice and her performances. That's not speculation. That's a fact. Britney had a great career, but due to poor choices and other circumstances, it's been derailed. I read that's she's sold over 80 million records. If that's not a solid career, nothing is. It's obvious that you don't like her, but I give credit where credit is due. I'm not talking about now. I'm talking about before. And I don't care if an artist writes their own songs.
I'm sure that's a nice essay you've written, buy no offense, I'm not into reading a chapter length post, so I'm going to take a pass. Nothing personal. Others may enjoy it.

well, Britney's career was because she was marketed so well. Her and all the teen poppers in the late 90's are no different than Miley Cyrus and all those High School Musical people out now. They were marketed to kids who will get their parents to buy their albums, and young teenagers who are starting to buy CD's. Those fans have grown up and moved on to other artists. People like Chris Crocker are Britney's remaining fanbase. Beyonce, Justin Timberlake and Christina Aguilera are all in the same age group and rose to fame at the same time as her, but had the talent to transition into mature serious adult artists. Britney doesn't and hasn't.

I agree 100% with what you say here Janice. My point though (and I think what Patti LaBelle was trying to say, albeit a little poorly) is that I don't think it's enough to take her very much farther as a singer and/or musical performer, even if she hadn't gotten derailed by her poor choices. That's not to say she wouldn't reinvent herself and become famous for some other talent when her current appeal is gone...I mean after all, if Sonny Bono could do it, I guess anyone could, and if there's one thing Britney is when she's in the right frame of mind, it's resolute.

yea, I think Britney might be able to do something when she cleans herself up, but like you, I don't think she has the talent or ability to sustain an adult career now that the kids grew up.
Maybe she might pull a Madonna one day and surprise all of us, but for now, I really have my doubts she'll ever become a great adult star and completely shed her TRL-heartthrob image like Justin or Christina were able to. I don't think Britney was ever meant to have the stardom she was given. Some people are naturals, Britney was meant to have some modest success and be forgotten after a few years, she didn't have what it takes to be an icon, and you can tell by the way she is publically melting down while others keep their cool in the public eye.

Pattie said what she said abt the pop stars and can't come back and say, "Well, what I really meant was _______."
Did anyone read the article Janice provided on the previous page? Patti is stating that Celine Dion's version of her (Patti's) song sold better and did better overall because Celine is WHITE. Yes, that is what she said. You can't change those words. Patti is using the race card. For her to resort to race as a reason for black artists doing poorly musically (yeah right  ) speaks volumes abt her explanation abt Britney and Jessica. She didn't come right out and say it, but as Janice stated so clearly, it seems jealousy is the issue with Patti, along with other issues like race. Patti is mentioning Jessica and Britney who are WHITE ARTISTS. I don't hear Patti stating anything abt those young black artists who are doing the same exact thing as Jessica and Britney. Bottom line, Patti doesn't care abt their "talent" she is jealous of their race and that is sad and pathetic.

Patti is a pathetic old hag who has nothing better to do. Britney is great and is consistent in putting out great records. Sure her life is in shambles, and might be doped out on drugs, but after listening to Blackout, there's no way we can knock her music. Sheer pop genius. Jessica has talent, her voice is actually great... she just seems to record the most awful material.
One thing Patti does have right... is her adoration and respect for Christina. She calls her "one of the best" and claims that Christina gives her hope for the future. Then again, she doesn't consider Christina a "pop artist."

While she co-wrote more than half of Britney and In the Zone, she only managed to write two songs from Blackout--"Freakshow," and "Get Naked (I Got a Plan)" both of which are fan favorites. She also has the sole executive producer credit on the album.
