NEW YORK (AP) -- Matt Damon has been named the "sexiest man alive" by People magazine, an honor that has been bestowed twice on his pals George Clooney and Brad Pitt.

Matt Damon says his wife, Luciana, watched him blush when he was told he was People's sexiest man.

The 37-year-old actor is featured on the cover of People's annual issue, on newsstands Friday. Damon, who is married to Luciana Bozan, said the honor came as a surprise.

"You gave an aging suburban dad the ego boost of a lifetime," he says in a letter published in the magazine. "My 9-year-old stepdaughter now thinks I'm cool -- well, cooler."

Damon, who has a 1-year-old daughter, Isabella, with Bozan, says "all the campaigning" by Clooney and Pitt had finally paid off.

"Unfortunately, after all those years out on the trail, the meet and greets, the fundraisers, the stump speeches, I've finally come to terms with the fact that this is a mantle I wasn't meant to hold," he says in the letter, which was signed "Matty."

"Don't get me wrong, though. I was really shocked and happy (Lucy said I actually blushed) when I heard the news. So I can't thank you enough for that."

People's "sexiest man alive" list began in 1985 with Mel Gibson. Others on the list: Clooney (1997 and 2006), Pitt (1995 and 2000), Denzel Washington (1996) and Johnny Depp (2003).

Damon won a screenwriting Oscar with Ben Affleck in 1998 for "Good Will Hunting." Both Damon and Affleck starred in the movie.

He has also starred in "The Departed," "Syriana," the "Ocean's" franchise with Clooney and Pitt, and "The Bourne Identity" and its two sequels.

I wouldn't say he's the sexiest man alive, but he is aging much better than his best friend Ben Affleck. Matt's similar to Leo where they didn't really start getting "cute" IMO until 30 because they were too baby-faced when they were younger.

That's where the comparison to Leo and Matt begins and ends, lol. Leo, now there's my kind of hunk. I think if Matt Damon was the guy working the deli counter, nobody would give him a second look. His looks are so vanilla average.

I told my boyfriend, "Honey, People lied. They said the sexiest man alive was Matt Damon. Not in my book. You are."

I don't see what the thing is with Matt Damon. Honestly. Then, they have had Pitt on there TWICE. Isn't the only man they have had on the cover that was non-white DENZEL WASHINGTON? Sad People magazine, very sad.

I'm not feeling it either, maybe Matt slipped the magazine a few bucks under the table!

I think he's cute, but not the sexiest man alive by any means. Then again, People Magazine and most of America wouldn't agree with my vote for the sexiest man alive. ;)

I personally can't think of any of today's "popular" actors that I find attractive. Matt Damon, Ben Afleck, Brad Pitt, Leo Decaprio, George Clooney, Heath Ledger, Keanu Reeves... I'm sorry, but if I saw these guys walking down the street I wouldn't give them the time of day. They just don't do it for me.

The man in my avatar is my pick for sexiest man alive. I mean, he's tall, ruggedly handsome, with that gorgeous curly hair, that crooked smile and that midwestern-ish accent and he has aged so well! He's a true gentleman who's very smart and doesn't take crap from anyone. He was born in Alabama, like me, and he was able to become a wonderful actor and a financial tycoon. Ok, I'd better shut up now, I could go on forever about my man. ;)

you like the Wayne Rogers of the 60's and 70's, and not the 75 year old Wayne Rogers, right? There are a lot of guys out there (Paul Newman and Sean Connery come to immediate mind) who I thought were gorgeous when they were young, but I'd never think about them as sexy in present tense.

Actually, I think Wayne looks incredible to be 74 years old. He has aged very well. People may think I'm sick, but if he came to my door right now I wouldn't turn him away. ;) Then again, I'm pretty weird compared to most girls my age. I was really supposed to be born around Wayne's time, but I accidentally got stuck here, lucky for me.

OH Nuts!

I hear you, Lauren! I have no idea what Gregory Sierra looks like these days, but back in the 1970s he would've blown all those "hunks" of today right out of the water!! :eyes:

matt damon, sexiest man alive? do me a favour. he is average at best. if i saw a guy, who was the spitting image of matt damon, walking down the street, i would hardly bat an eyelid. i doubt any of us have read people mag and have any intention of taking it seriously. i've never been into clooney, pitt to name either. i've always had an inkling for the underrated actors anyway over a-listers.

'sexiest man alive' is some title, but for me there's no such thing as that in my eyes- just guys i find attractive. my avator is a clue to who i have an inkling for;)

also i have a feeling that because that damon has appeared in more films than say, decaprio, pitt etc, people mag must've felt that he deserves that title. well, if they have taken that into consideration, then it is a crock of bull
