(Studio Briefing) After decades of aborted discussions about building a Hollywood museum, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences may take matters into its own hands and spearhead the project. The Associated Press reported today (Thursday) that the Academy, the group responsible for the annual Oscar awards, has commissioned the French architects Atelier Christian de Portzamparc, award winnners in their own right, to design a complex that will occupy a two-city block area in Hollywood. Academy President Sid Ganis told A.P. that the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures will be "a monument to the art of film." He said that the Academy plans to launch a $400-million fundraising drive so that construction can begin in 2009 and be completed in 2012.
