A Downtrodden Housewife No More, Patricia Heaton Can't Wait to Get Sexy
After nine hit years as Debra on Everybody Loves Raymond, Patricia Heaton returns in what is tipped to be another long-running comedy. She stars with Kelsey Grammer (no stranger himself to marathon sitcoms, with Cheers and Frasier on his resume') on Back to You, in which they play newscasters with a love-hate relationship. Patricia, 49, explains why she's excited to get a whole new glamorous TV wardrobe.
Your character on Back to You is a single mom with a daughter.
Patricia Heaton: That's correct. I had a daughter on Raymond too, so it's nice to have a girl thing going on. I've got four boys at home, so this summer was all Transformers, paint ball and air guns.
How old are your boys?
Patricia Heaton: Eight, 10. .. I have no idea [laughs]. Eight, 10, 12 and 13. It's so much fun to watch them. They're getting to the age where we're almost able to watch movies together, which I'm so happy about.
Do they know what you do for a living?
Patricia Heaton: They could care less. When I did a pilot for ABC last year, my third son was upset that i was going back to work. I said, "We're just shooting a pilot. It might not be any good." And he said, "It's going to be really good, and you're going to be working again."
Does being on Back to You mean less time at home with your family?
Patricia Heaton: Actually, the hours were so short nobody even noticed I was gone!
You've been open in the past about plastic surgery and weight loss. Anything new to report?
Patricia Heaton: Nothing new. With Back to You, I though, "Thank goodness I have a role where I can wear fabulous suits and look sexy." And then [co-star] Ayda [Field] came out, and i was like, "Oh, my god, she is phenomenal." It was a little demoralizing.
How do you keep healthy?
Patricia Heaton: My joints are falling apart, so I'm swimming more. And I'm juicing in the morning and afternoon.
How do you get on with Kelsey?
Patricia Heaton: I was a little intimidated to work with Kelsey because he's got one of the longest and most successful careers in television. I felt shy, but I quickly graduated to making fun of him! Kelsey is really goffy but very sexy, because he's confident.
Do you feel pressure to make the show a hit?
Patricia Heaton: Not pressure. I have total confidence that this is going to be the funniest show this year.
Did you ever consider a career in TV news?
Patricia Heaton: I started out as a journalism major at Ohio State, but I changed to theater. Acting was always in my heart. I had to get the courage to try it.
You were the boss on Raymond - do you get tired of telling male characters what to do?
Patricia Heaton: It's the women's lot in life to try to improve the men!
Did you lighten your hair specifically for this role on Back to you?
Patricia Heaton: Yes, to help me move away from Debra. I think you also have to help the audience get that out of their mind too, because that character was indelibly imprinted in a lot of people's minds. nine years is a long time.
And do blondes have more fun?
Patricia Heaton: Yeah! It's really fun.
