View Full Version : The Reason FOX is Advertising the HECK Out Of 'Back To You'

Fox, is pulling out all the stops to bang the drums for "Back to You," a sitcom co-starring Kelsey Grammer of "Frasier" fame and Patricia Heaton of "Everybody Loves Raymond." You wouldn't think a show with those two stars would need a lot of hype, but that thinking blew up for Fox when it didn't heavily promote Brad Garrett last season in "'Til Death" and it nearly flopped.

Fox has a lot of money tied up in Grammer's and Heaton's salaries, so it's giving "Back to You," a sitcom about two newscast co-anchors, a big shove. Fox put fake news vans topped by satellite dishes on the streets of big cities with the fictional station's call letters and Grammer's and Heaton's faces on the sides.

Another reason that Fox is hot to trot for "Back to You" is that opposite it at 8 p.m. Wednesdays are two other highly promoted new shows: CBS' "Kid Nation" and ABC's "Pushing Daisies."

Heaton is on Regis and Kelly today, i will check it out when I get home. Yeah I can understand the logic behind the running of the promo, i just wish the show started this week instead of next week

FOX hasn't had a traditional (three camera taped before a live audience) sitcom hit in a long time, and now they have a show with two of the most recognizable faces on TV that looks like a hit. I would hope they would promote the heck out of it.

Thanks guys. I guess I'm guilty as charged. I'm obsessed with this show. Pavan can relate to that, given his obsession with ABC. It hurts his eyes to see action on a forum, lol. I would think the Admin of a site would be pleased that a member is trying to build enthusiasm for a show, and not make fun of the person. I could post at some busier Back To You forums, leaving this graveyard behind. Whatever Pavan, just think of it as the months leading up to 8 Simple Rules when you made endless threads, lol.

I agree, it does get frustrating at times to post on shows and NOBODY responds. I mean, there have been other people who have done most of the posting on some of these sub forums and nothing is said to them. Why is that?

Am I excited about this show? Yes, but I care more about the discussions than just posting random ****. That's just me.

I remember Pav gushing about Knights of Prosperity. He swore by it. He even made a logical point why he was defending it so much. He said he was just trying to promote good sitcoms. Well, that is what I am doing.

I just hope this board remains active and I hope that BTY is a great sitcom and can ignite a sitcom comeback. I think all of us want that. I've been reading reviews of BTY and they are mostly favorable...so it will be interesting to see. I think it's also smart to premiere it next week, which is a week before the tv season actually begins.

I never said you can't post a lot of threads. I was making a joke, but you didn't take it that way. No need to curse. Come on, look at the form, doesn't it look a little funny? I was joking. Oh well, I guess it fits since we have a cast photo that says WURG over and over.

And I actually watched The Knights of Prosperity before I "gushed" about it.

I get frustrated whenever I go to sitcom boards on this site and the only threads that are active are wrong answer games or whatever they are called. I'm not knocking those threads or anything, don't get me wrong, but it would be nice if there could be actual discussions about the shows.

Pav, I am not cursing at you. It just seems that you weren't kidding. And let's be honest, there aren't many shows on ABC that you don't like. Why is that? Seriously, why do you like ABC so much? I am dying to know.

Actually, I have no problem if you asked why I like Patricia Heaton. Patricia reminds me of my wife in so many ways. ELR was an ok show, but Debra Barone was dead on to the love of my life.

To answer your other question, YES I would check out Back To You even without her in it. I am a HUGE Frasier fan and I also love Fred Willard. I posted about a million threads on the Joey board and last I checked, there was no Patricia or Kelsey on that show.

It is not a crime, you are entitled to like what you like. It may be a little odd, but not a crime. It also makes it hard to get a true read, on whether an ABC show is really all that good. Especially when it rarely gets a bad grade. That's just my opinion. I apologize if that offends you and I am not trying to do that, but sometimes you are really hard to read.

Brian, your posts are appreciated. I hope the show lives up to the hype. I think that it will and will help help the return of the multi-camera sitcom.

If you can joke about Pavan's love for ABC, you surely can take him joking about your love of Patricia Heaton and sheer volume of threads you've created. I think you guys are both taking things way too seriously.

And Brian has been moderator for WEEKS. I can take a hint when somebody looks to be that big of a fan of a show. Nobody even noticed? lol

Sonny, you and I have to brainstorm soon about this season's shows. I can't go through all those threads on General. I'm too behind. Lou loves Jericho. He likes to give all the action-type dramas a try. The only shows I know I'm watching this season so far are Shark and Back To You, and my HBO shows. Other than that, I'm as lost as can be. So true, I refuse to believe that the sitcom genre is D.O.A. It just needs one really big hit. I am not saying 'BTY' will be that hit, but with an all star cast and an all star director and producer behind it, I really think it has got a shot.

Woah. 75 posts since the beginning of the week (although most of them were a series of minor wars between Pavan and Brian). It's stupid to fight like this over a show that nobody really knows about yet besides promos and articles about the new show. We have to wait and see. BTY seems like a good show, and I'll watch the pilot: but until then, why speculate when we don't even have anything to back up our opinions with? BTY is also the only new show I am even mildly interested in this fall. I'm reminded of another example of when a show was hyped up but failed to usher in the masses: it was one of the shows that premiered a year ago around this time and was one of two shows that parodied SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE. And I'll give you a hint: it wasn't 30 ROCK, but it did have a multiple of 10 number in the title! I'll give you all a few minutes to mull this one over...

Woah. 75 posts since the beginning of the week (although most of them were a series of minor wars between Pavan and Brian).
That's not true. There was a little dustup. Not most of 75 posts.
It's stupid to fight like this over a show that nobody really knows about yet besides promos and articles about the new show.
We have to wait and see. BTY seems like a good show, and I'll watch the pilot: but until then, why speculate when we don't even have anything to back up our opinions with?
You don't have to, but it's not stupid that other members choose to discuss a show before it airs. You don't have to speculate if you don't want. See you after the show airs.

Good post! I enjoy talking up the show. Will it be good? I don't know, but I sure hope so. At least we are talking about sitcoms again on SITCOMSonline.

I'm getting pumped Brian! I've got Back To You fever, BAD, lol. Even my husband is psyched. He loves Kelsey Grammer and Patty's cleavage, lol. Is your wife planning on watching it?

That show wouldn't have happened to star "Chandler" from "Friends", and had the number 60 in it, would it? ;)

Thanks. I thought it was kind of clever, lol.

Did you see Kelsey and Patty on the red carpet tonight, at the Emmys, with their spouses? They looked great. They must be presenters, I'm guessing. Next year, they'll be nominees. ;)

Ding ding ding, you got it! And by the way Janice and Brian, I'm not trying to start another fight here, I'm just saying that it was starting to get a little juvenile with all of the fighting that was going on between Pavan and Brian. And I know that a majority of the posts were valid ones and not just fighting, I was just making a bit of a joke (kind of like what Pav was originally intending to do with him saying how much you posted about this show). Maybe I should've just stayed out of it because it's clear you take any possible criticism of BTY MUCH too seriously (and like I say I wasn't trying to criticize it in the first place, just trying to make a point that the show has the potential to be great, and also has the potential to end up like STUDIO 60). Only time will tell, and fighting isn't going to improve the ratings or make them plummet, so everyone should just have their own opinions and leave them to theirselves.

I have zero problem with people being critical of the show. Heck, I might not even like it. I am just very excited about an actual sitcom and I haven't been in years.

Not to bring up that old dispute, but I was making my rounds on the boards this morning, and saw that you, Brian, have about 10 news threads on the "Grey's Anatomy" board...SEE! Your not playing favorites! You spread your news everywhere, not only on the BTY board. :)

Perfectly understandable. I myself haven't been excited about a sitcom in a few years, as it's basically a lost art in a world where reality TV and dramas rule the airwaves. I am looking forward to the pilot of BTY, I just think that some people interpreted my posts wrong. I wasn't trying to intervene to be a pain in the butt, only to break up a fight. I'm sorry to all of you who thought I was trying to be a party pooper. I was just pointing out that in the end, Pavan's views can turn into reality, or Brian's. So there's no need to FIGHT about the show until we have a few episodes under our belt and we can truly assess BTY in a critical way. As of now, it's anybody's guess, but I'm praying that for once we have a quality three-camera sitcom in the '00s (before we go into the next decade!) It's a shame when you take a decade like the 1970's, and look at how many successful shows we had back then. Today you can count the number of successful current sitcoms on one hand.

Please Janice and Brian, forgive me and what I may've said, as we all make mistakes, and I could've written something completely different from what I was really thinking.

JUST SO IT'S ALL OUT IN THE OPEN:

I'm on YOUR side,
I DON'T think fighting should ensue over a show that hasn't premiered yet,
and I can't wait for BACK TO YOU to premiere! :)

Don't ask for forgiveness. It's all good, and we all gave as good as we got.

Is that your dog in your avatar or is that Eddie from Frasier? Absolutely adorable.

OK, I just didn't want anybody to think I was trying to stir up trouble. Yeah, that's Eddie (Moose) from FRASIER. Kind of ironic how we're on the subject of another one of Kelsey's shows here.
