A lot of shows get high ratings because they come after even higher rating show. These shows are often canceled or lose ratings when they are moved to a different time slot. These types of shows are not usually long lasting hits in syndication. Many of these shows aren't that good to begin with.

Family Ties->Cosby Show
Different World->Cosby Show
Grace Under Fire, Coach>Roseanne, Home Improvement (on Tuesdays)
King of the Hill, Malcolm in the Middle, That 70s Show> Simpsons

CBS's Sunday shows piggyback off 60 minutes and late running football games. ABC missed this opportunity with Millionaire.

Joanie Loves Chachi became a major hit in the summer of 1982 in the timeslot after Happy Days. Come fall, it was moved to a different night and the ratings fell down the drain. Cancellation soon followed.

I believe Two and a Half Men was helped out by the fact that it immediately followed Everybody Loves Raymond when it debuted. Malcolm in the Middle had a good lead in with The Simpsons. Same goes for House - I think it was truly helped by the fact that it came on right after American Idol.

When Too Close for Comfort moved from their timeslot after Three's Company on Tuesday to Thursday in the third season the show tanked.

Room for Two, Linda Lavin's comeback to TV after Alice, tanked after it was moved from Tuesday after Roseanne to Thursday nights up against Cheers. It was a good show.

I dissagree that Family Ties' ratings were tied to the Cosby Show, FT came along BEFORE Cosby and was already a steady ratings hit on its own, before Cosby came along.

and Family Ties was the #2 rated show on TV during a part of that stretch...and Michael J. Fox became a huge star. It was not a time period hit. It in fact was higher rated than Cheers during the entire time it was on Thursday nights. Of Course if you want to say that every show on Thursday night benifited from Cosby I'll go along with that as well as every other sitcom at that time.

Some shows just don't syndicate well. Murphy Brown is another example. It was a big hit during its first run but not that much in syndication. On the other hand The Brady Bunch and Gilligan's Island have had the opposite happen. They are bigger hits in syndication than they ever were when they originally ran.

I don't think those shows are piggybacking.

many believed that "Will & Grace" piggybacked off of "Friends" for many years during it's run, and i almost believe it because ratings on W&G weren't as good the year after "Friends" ended

Seinfeld didn't do good until it came on right after Cheers.

If you look at nielsen ratings from the 80's, Family Ties didn't become a huge hit until after The Cosby Show came on the air. The Cosby Show pretty much single-handedly brought back the sitcom genre.

isn't that what I said? Family Ties was starting to hit the top 20 during the summer of 1984 though, even before TCS came on the air. When Cosby premiered it rejuvinated the whole night for NBC and really the whole network was rejuvinated. Family Ties though was not a hit just because of the timeslot. Their were times that FT actually hit #1 in the ratings ahead of TCS and their final episode which aired on a Sunday actually did finish #1. A timeslot only program would not have been able to do that. On top of that , you could say that Cheers benifited by being on Thursdays too because before 1984 they had worst ratings than FT did. In fact that first year that Cosby was on , Cheers didn't even make it to the top 10.

It become a hit with latchkey kids because it was scheduled during the early evening hours when kids were home alone after school.

That's right, and shows like Barney Miller, WKRP and Bob Newhart were also much bigger hits in syndicated reruns than when they were originally on the air!!

After the Cosby went off the air, the ratings for A Different World different world tanked (although they were actually higher than Cosby during its last 2 seasons) Cheers still made the Top 10 after Cosby went off

That's when most of the sitcoms air in syndication. The fact is it took off while others did not. I was never home alone after school and I watched it a lot back in the 70's when it first went to syndication. A lot of my friends did too and not all of them were home alone either. It just clicked is all.

Mork & Mindy began its run on Thursday nights and drew HUGE ratings. (I believe Barney Miller and Soap were on the same night.) Then the brainiacs at ABC decided to move it to Sundays and the ratings took a huge freefall. Though the show was eventually moved back to Thursdays, the damage was done. (Though I don't think the addition of Mearth helped matters any. :eek:)

I hope not to offend you Monika or anyone else here, but I think the real reason that Mork & Mindy "took a huge freefall" in the ratings is because it was such a terrible show. I think people were really interested in the show early on because it was a spin-off of Happy Days, but after its newness worse off, people began to see the show for what it truly was...a truly awful series.

:lol: I'm one of the few people who actually likes Mork & Mindy. However, I'm not offended. :)

I think the main reason the show dropped in the ratings after the first season was because the producers and ABC messed around with the show. Not only did they move it to Sundays, but they also got rid of most of the supporting cast at the start of the 2nd season. Also, the episodes became more "meaningful" and sorta took away from the comedy that made the first season of M&M so great. Even though I like the second season, it just wasn't nearly as good as the first. They tried to fix their mistakes after a while, but by then it was already too late.

Any show that aired in an 8:30 or 9:30 ET slot on NBC's Thursday Must See TV lineup (after "Friends" or "Seinfeld") in the mid to late 1990s was a Top 10 hit when it was there and was usually cancelled within a year after moving to a new timeslot. Examples include "Suddenly Susan," "Fired Up," "The Naked Truth," "The Single Guy," "Caroline in the City," and "Jesse"

Perhaps but, by that time, Seinfeld really didnt have much competiton; the sitcom genre was in a freefall that it hasnt really recovered from.....as the late Harold Ballard once said " It's easy to soar like an eagle, when you're flying with turkeys!" :lol:
