I'm sorry but WHAT... Soap and The Jeffersons are two of the most critically acclaimed shows to ever air, they were most definetly not disliked by critics.

Are you nuts? All in the family is perphaps the MOST critically acclaimed show to ever air. It was a rare show that was liked by both critics and viewers.

and Roseanne was pretty acclaimed as well... critics cited it as being groundbreaking, realistic, gritty and hilarious. It did however, get a lot of bad press because of Roseanne's personality which some saw as too abrasive and crude, but for the most part it was a generally well-received show...

The Brady Bunch - Was dissed by critics and was never a Top 25 show in its original ABC run, but remianed a cult favorite to this day among fans.

Star Trek (The Original) - It was first rejected by CBS since they wanted a more commerically-made show like Lost in Space. Then a second pilot was rejected again, this time by NBC for it was deemed as "too cerebral." Even when the original ST was on during its' original NBC run, it still received bad criticism by critics. However, due to the popularity of the movies, merchandise, reruns, etc., it was revived various times throughout the next few decades as movies and TV revivals.

Wings was often panned by critics and called a poor man's Cheers, but it garnered enough viewers to last 8 seasons. Personally, I've always preferred Wings to Cheers. I've never been one to follow the crowd ;)

caroline in the city- well the critics trashed it to bits, and yet it still gained a good fanbase, with most of them hailing from europe like myself

friends- despite its popularity with most audiences, critics didn't take to friends until the last few seasons

the parkers- a good show this was, despite the grilling it got and i know sol how much you dislike monique, but as nicki parker she was hilarious

The critics couldn't stand The Beverly Hillbillies but it became the #1 show on TV during it's first year.

Little House on the Prairie & Highway to Heaven were disliked by critics who found Michael Landon's programming sugary sweet and preachy. Full House, Family Matters, Perfect Strangers, Soap, CHiPS, Love Boat...the list goes on and on.

it was Lucile Ball who was responsible for STAR TREK getting on the air. In it's first season; it was filmed at Desilu studios (which was later sold to Paramount) and the pilot was shown to her and some other "suits" at the studio. But noone liked it and wanted to go with it exept her since she liked science fiction. So since she was the president of the studio; they bought it.
In fact; when they started filming the first episode; she called and wished them luck.

i can't say specifically but we all know that The Jeffersons is one of the most acclaimed shows to ever air! it's won multiple emmys, and is hailed as a historic classic...

sad, but true. Other than "Family" critics have notoriously been unkind to Aaron Spelling. They were SAVAGE with Charlie's Angel's, Dynasty, Melrose Place, 90210, Models Inc., and Savannah...

what do you mean mulitple awards? The Jeffersons Only Won 1 emmy award.

Step By Step and Saved By The Bell were pretty much bashed from the get go (especially Saved By The Bell).

And I don't know if this counts, but The Jerry Springer show (LOL) is NOT a favorite on the critical acclaim list.

So I was hoping you can help mei can only think of one tv critic who really liked it and that would be harry castaleman co writer of the book harry and wallys favorate tv shows .when i was growing up i dont remember too many other critics liking the jeffersons .noboyd on that end seemed to really hate it but they didnt say it was all that wonderful ether

Actually, Jericho was not well liked by critics, it only has a 48 on Metacritic.

17 Network shows that debut last year have higher rankings (that's excluding CBS Evening News with Katie Couric), only 7 have a lower rating.

Ironically the lowest rated show from last season, The Game, is returning for a second season. I don't know if we can say viewers love it though as it was also the 2nd lowest rated show last year. How it got a 2nd season is beyond my thinking

well i know that TV Guide's Matt Roush and Micheal Auseillo have spoken pretty highly of it, and it obviously had enough fan support to save it from cancelation. and most reviews i've read of it have been pretty good, if not great.

But I don't think it was that much of a hit with Viewers. Kind of a In between

It always seems as if the critics are more harsh on sitcoms than any other genre....but shows that stick out in my mind are

Roseanne (Top 5 for six straight seasons including a #1 finish 89-90 season)
Family Matters (#1 Show on Friday nights from 1991-1996)
Friends (Top 5 for 9 out of 10 seasons including a #1 finish 01-02 season)
Full House (5 top 30 seasons including two top 10 finishes 91-93 seasons)
Giligan's Island (Top 30 show it's final two seasons)
