BACK TO YOU
(Wednesdays, 8:00-8:30 PM ET/PT)

In the ‘90s, the local TV news scene in Pittsburgh was dominated by one team: CHUCK DARLING (Kelsey Grammer) and KELLY CARR (Patricia Heaton). They had that elusive quality all news teams need: chemistry ... at least on-screen. Off-screen, Chuck was a bit of a self-centered womanizer, Kelly a bit of an uptight know-it-all. When Chuck grabbed the chance to move up to a larger market, no tears were shed.

But after an embarrassing on-air tirade ended up on the Internet, Chuck found himself on the downswing career-wise. He even questioned whether his lifestyle of chasing women and living in hotels was as exciting as it used to be. So when he got the call to return to Pittsburgh, to reunite with Kelly and try to take the newscast back to No. 1, it was an offer he couldn’t refuse.

Back in Pittsburgh, Chuck and Kelly reteam with familiar faces including MARSH McGINLEY (Fred Willard), the affable, endlessly inappropriate sports anchor, and GARY CREZYZEWSKI, pronounced Kre-shoov-ski (Ty Burrell), the perennially put-upon field reporter who always seems to get left out in the cold; and they have a few new coworkers: RYAN CHURCH (Josh Gad), the under qualified, overstressed news director, and MONTANA DIAZ HERRERA (Ayda Field), the perky, sexy, somewhat inept weather anchor. But perhaps the biggest change is that Kelly is now single mom to 10-year-old GRACIE (Laura Marano).

There was magic between Chuck and Kelly once. Can they find it again?

BACK TO YOU is created, written and executive-produced by Steven Levitan (“Just Shoot Me!,” “Frasier,” “Wings”) and Christopher Lloyd (“Frasier,” “The Golden Girls”). James Burrows is executive producer and director. The series is from Levitan/Lloyd Productions in association with 20th Century Fox Television.

I also have hight hopes for this series I think it will do good after all The Guy who played Frasier on Frasier and Ray's Wife on Everybody Loves Raymond is on this series

The pilot is just OK, but the series could get better obviously. It certainly would have been better for CBS Monday. I am not sure if it can do as well on Fox, especially against the much hyped Pushing Daisies (best new series hands down) on ABC, Deal or no Deal on NBC, and the buzz worthy new show Kid Nation on CBS.
We'll see, I guess. I think 3rd in its timeslot behind Daisies and Deal.

You make some good points, but I really think FOX is going to make every effort to make this show succeed. If that means switching it to another day, so be it.

I think this is the best bet that sitcoms have for a major hit. If Kelsey and Patricia can't do it, I don't think anybody can.

Oh yeah, if they can make that garbage 'Til Death return, then this will indeed last the season.

LOL I agree, that show is garbage. It does make an interesting pairing though.

Yeah it isn't that great of a show but it had a major ratings boost and was in the Top Ten post-Idol...that's I think the reason why it was brought back. If it still had the awful ratings it had early on it would probably've been canceled either in midseason or it would've lasted the full season but it wouldn't be renewed for a complete second season.

I'm also hoping this show will do well, but Ppushing Daisies is gonna be a hard show to beat, since I also want to watch that one, too. I'm certain it'll be moving timeslots soon after it's premiere, maybe to Monday or Tuesday nights.

Since it ahs a really proffessional and wellknown cast, I'm sure it's premiere is going to do really well. But, I think the same thin gthat happened to 8 Simple Rules is going to happen to this show. It's premiere was really well taken and promoted, but after that, ratings slipped.

It lost over 60% of the Idol audience though...it was brought back for one reason: to air with Back to You. Fox doesn't have another sitcom besides animation. War at Home, The Loop, The Winner did terrible. Happy Hour was even worse than 'Til Death, if that's even possible.

Yeah but The War At Home lasted two seasons--okay for Fox. Yeah The Winner tanked and The Loop and Happy Hour being worse than 'Til Death--I agree. 'Til Death was not the best but I watched its entire pilot. Happy Hour on the other hand--I shut off the TV after a few minutes because I found it so unfunny that I couldn't bear to watch the whole episode.

That was an excellent review, TJ. The show certainly sounds promising. I was a little disappointed to hear that the sets aren't spectacular, but I suppose we can't have everything. Good point about the salaries. Sometimes, if a show goes through the roof, the sets expand.
I'm trying to imagine Kelsey Grammer in another comedic role. Two decades of Frasier Crane, it's a long time. I can understand Kelsey and Patricia having chemistry. They just seem like the same 'type' of actors.

Can't wait! :yippee:

I was looking forward to this review. I can honestly say I'm looking forward to it a lot more now than I was before. Since I love MTM and especially Murphy Brown, it'll be great to watch another newsroom show following in their footsteps. I'm really going to look for the resemblences between these shows while watching on Wednesday.

It definitely sounds promising. I'm sure we'll get a full season order soon after the premiere.

Their reviews are okay to be honest...BTW I'm not trying to be a hater or anything, I'm stating my opinion...Pavan's like "This is really great! 5/5 stars!" or "It's just OK...I think it could get better though." No inbetween it seems. Than again have SO EVER gave a pilot one star or one number or however they do it? I don't think so. Too nice you all are! Too nice. I mean when have you guys ever found a sitcom despicable? Never. And you're reviews aren't really sneering and have no in-jokes or anything. I read them..I think "Okay it's your opinion...it's alright" but I like people with senses of humor. I like people who make rude jokes and metaphors and whatnot. And if the show's great it's always the same ol' "It's really good and hopefully it'll improve in later episodes!" stuff. I agree with your basic points but you have that same annoying formula that you people think is successful. You know I'm an idiot. All I do is hate. Your review was good, okay and I agree with your review. I agree with the fact that you find it hilarious. It probably will for the most part be funny. Maybe not all the way around (mind you, it is multi-camera and that formula sucks nowadays) but it may have a few good laughs. I say this because a few clips I saw were cliche and just not funny. Pushing it. For example Kelsey Grammer's character says something like "Oh that guy sucks." and than they turn to the camera and Patricia Heaton's character says "Tonight at 6..." and it's supposed to be funny. But it's kind of not. It's an average joke from a multi-camera sitcom nowadays. Unfunny and it's just unfunny. Okay you may laugh-out-loud but it's forced. It's not natural laughter. I laugh naturally at My Name Is Earl....30 Rock...because those shows are absurd and hilarious. I don't laugh-out-loud at shows like....say....'Til Death....or when I do it's not really natural. I think it's forced. It's like "They're laughing and now I'm supposed to laugh"...with 30 Rock it's not that way....it's natural. I'm not really supposed to laugh...I just truly want to. I think "This is funny" I don't think "Oh I'm supposed to laugh, right?". Yeah. That's all.

Paragraphs are your friend.

Do you ever do anything except whine and complain? It is starting to become very old.

We didn't do the reviews on the blogs this year.. big deal.. should we have consulted with you first or something? Does it even matter where we post them? It was double the work to post them on a separate page. Every single one your posts is whining or has a negative attitude. We can't post dvd reviews early when we don't receive them before the release date. Grow up already.

Watch the show yourself and write your own reviews.

I've read some unfavorable views by TJ and his writing team. I think this review was an honest review -- not a glowing rave review, but not a slam either. He wrote his opinion. If you're looking for sneering rude jokes and metaphors in your reviews, this obviously isn't the place to find that. Google the show, and you may find reviews more to your liking, but SO reviews are just fine. You want nasty reviews, check out Mr. Cranky at http://www.mrcranky.com/archives/index.html I'm not sure if he's branched out into TV reviews yet, but his movie reviews are wild.
This is the writing style of the SO writing staff, so it's sort of take it or leave it -- and stop trying to change it, hurry it or do anything but read them. I only read the reviews of the shows I watch, and I've enjoyed every one of them that I've read. I can tell a lot of thought went into the reviews, and they weren't phoned in.
They probably don't want to turn off members to a show either, and if they give a new show the benefit of the doubt, so be it. Given that, it's not really in anyone's best interest to call a show despicable. How many shows are despicable anyway?
They don't have to have any reviews on this site, when you really think about it. It's an added bonus and a wonderful feature that TJ does for his members. Think of all the coordinating and writing that goes on to get these hundreds of reviews out.
I think you should be more appreciate of that, and even say thank you. Don't call yourself an idiot either. I simply think you should be grateful that there are so many reviews in the first place. Where else do you see that on a message board site? I appreciate the reviews.

My God, I don't get it. It's a review. Not something to get stirred up abt. You call yourself a hater and an idiot. What is the point? Seems to me you love to write lengthy posts, why not add to the critique and the reviews of the shows rather than "being a hater" as you pointed out? Sure, there are shows that won't catch your eye, there are shows that seem pointless and moot, but that is what is great abt television, you can change the channel. Let's chat abt the positive rather than the negative.

Ahhhh that reminds me of Tuesday nights and Friday nights in the 70's. ;) Tuesday was Happy Days and Laverne & Shirley. Friday nights was The Love Boat and Fantasy Island. Damn, that decade was great for television.

I like sitcoms of the past but the sitcoms nowadays suck hard (Two And A Half Men, anyone?) and people like According To Jim....how do they find comedy in that crap? Yes it's crap. Sure they're low-rated but they get renewed and critics adore them [the single-camera shows I mean].

And here's my last big rant....You guys get the blog up at like 7:00 PM at night at times...that and your DVD reviews can be in late but that's on the side...anyways....you guys' reviews are good for the most part but both you and Pavan have that big thing--It's like a show is OK ori its fantastic--it's 5/5 EVERYWHERE or it's 4.5/5 everywhere or something. However you do the grade system on your pilot reviews (as they are probably slightly different from how you do your DVD reviews). EDIT:This annoys me. It's either fantastic or OK. No totally awful....no metaphors.....honesty but sugar-coatedness or something. I don't know. Also I notice how with your DVD reviews you guys ignore the Warner Bros. DVDs and that Shawn does all WB DVD reviews it seems. Always Full House....Two And A Half Men...the list goes on.

I have a real job (and a life), I can't get the blog up at the same time everyday. You do know the blog has had one entry everyday since we established it, right? We have never missed a damn day. I think that is pretty darn amazing if you ask me.
And our DVD reviews are never late. We review each DVD 48 hours later at max when we get them. If we don't get a DVD in time from the studio, it is not our fault.

We don't comment on how shows are really on the DVD reviews, so what are you talking about? We talk about the content of the DVD. We don't give everything 4.5 or 5/5. Get your facts straight before you state something. And as for pilot reviews, I guess you didn't see our 'Til Death and Happy Hour reviews from last fall? Both got terrible reviews from us. Shawn is assigned Full House and Two and a Half Men, what is the problem with that? He doesn't do all the WB DVDs...so I guess when I did Gilligan's Island, Life Goes On, George Lopez, etc or when skees did Tales from the Crypt, etc that didn't count?

Sorry. I forgot about those. And I know you have a life and a job....it's just why can't it be posted up in the morning? Why can't you just post it up early in the morning...I don't think people really like waiting until 8:00 PM for news stories but than again there's these boards where things are posted faster. So I am wrong on some points, yes but not all. And Happy Hour got 2/5...not 1/5...same thing with 'Til Death. So it wasn't absolutely awful....it was more or less bad....well it just wasn't absoultely awful. It just wasn't...at least by you guys. And Seth told me that my behavior is bad and that I shouldn't say a certain word. And it seems I can't post in that thread anymore. It's odd. And yes it's up everyday but you did take vacation. In some cases, you probably had to but some you thought "Hey....I don't need to be on this comp. everyday! I need to get away from the troubles of SO!" or whatever. Even though you may not think it has no troubles. And you think Dirty Sexy Money is the second best show this fall....all I can say is "Whoa". All I can say. That's all.

Um because the day's news sometimes doesn't happen until afternoons... That's why it is called "today's news." News doesn't happen at the same time everyday. Usually the news I post is not available elsewhere, which makes the SO Blog unique.

8PM is not late. That is 5PM PT out west. You have to think of other time zones, not just you. Happy Hour got a 1/5, you really need to check your facts because you are making a fool of yourself. Look: http://www.sitcomsonline.com/happyhourpilotreview.html

And yes I do go on vacations, but that is only when I'm out of state or country. So Todd does fill in. So it gets done, what is the big deal? I send him things while I'm away or I save some items for him to post while I'm gone.

HugeTVFan, it seems like all you at these boards is complain, and about the silliest things. It was a review, and I thought it was a great, and very helpful, review at that. All you did was complain about, how useless it was, and how you didn't like it. Why would youcome to this board, where we have all been looking forward to this show for months, and then make us upset at you over because of your comments? Then, you tried to go off an blame it on TJ and Pavan, which changed to an argument over Pavan not getting the blog up on the same time every day. He does what he can, and he does a damn good job at it. It makes no sense at all.

HugeTVFan, you haven't even seen Back to You, so what are you complaining about? Todd gave it 4.5/5 stars because he thinks it has potential. I really didn't think the pilot was all that great, but I do think it can grow with the star power. Todd didn't like the second episode much (I haven't seen that one), so that is not a good sign...but that is only 2 episodes. I personally liked the pilot for Big Bang Theory better. I will review that one and it will be on the blog on Friday.

Okay. I thought it got 2/5 for some reason. I apologize. And yeah I am complaining for no good reason (this is to roseanne) after all. It's just I think the show doesn't look superfunny. But you know what....this is stupid.

Well Two and a Half Men is the only sitcom that is currently ranked in the top 20 so obviously the majority of the people like it. ATJ was a very popular sitcom for years...yes it's fallen off recently but a lot of that has to do with AI and the fact that ABC has had trouble finding any other sitcoms that are hits. I've never followed critics. I use them as a guide when I first start watching new shows but their have been plenty of critically acclaimed shows I've hated.....Arrested Development and the Office...just to name two.

Are you still complaining and whining? Boy, there are ways to get attention, but the only attention you are getting is negative attention. And now you are comparing yourself to Solomon and his weekly rants? First of all, that came abt because me and Brian D. came up with the idea. We felt that Solomon was a POSITIVE MEMBER OF THE BOARD who seems to speak his mind in a rather humorous way. He isn't bitching, he isn't complaining, he is simply giving his opinion without turning into a whiner. Maybe you should learn to stop whining and learn to read without reading so much into everything that is posted on here, whether it is a blog, DVD review, threads, etc. The fact that so many here have already spoken our minds abt your constant complaining should tell you something. But obviously you only seek attention like certain people around here and it gets them no where.

TJ, Pav and Seth work hard to bring us this board and all the work that goes on behind S.O. is work they do in between their work, their personal lives and other things. It would be greatly appreciated if you HugeTVFan would get off your so-called soapbox and stop crying like a baby and give it a rest already.

How many times do I have to explain this? The reviewer gets the DVD. He has 48 hours from the time he gets it to get it done. Then I edit it and look over it. Then it goes to Todd for publishing. So that is why sometimes it takes longer than the 48 hour period...but they do get done in 48 hours (skees takes much less, he is quick). Instead of complaining, ask how the process works instead of assuming crap. You again have proved yourself with no facts. And the facts you give are WRONG (see the Happy Hour review statement).

You know I created the review program for people to read and be informed of DVDs and the pilots. Not to be lectured on when it should be posted. That is our job, not yours.

You mean the pilots? Well we get the pilots for review a few weeks or so in advance. The pilot reviews don't have a 48 hour deadline because we are not allowed to put the reviews way ahead of time. So we try to put the reviews up 2-4 days or so before the sitcom premieres.

I get most pilots in June but they are not the final cuts. They are not for review either. Just so the writers know what the show is and buzz can spread. Review copies go out a few weeks before the show premieres and that's when we can really talk about them. Though there are certain things the studio doesn't want anyone spreading. I'll give you a hint, the Back to You pilot has a bit of a twist at the end.

The DVD reviews have the 48 hour deadline. I created that so we get the reviews out before anyone else. Usually we do, too. We review every sitcom (minus some of the cable stuff on Disney, Showtime, Nick, etc.).

Thanks. That's more interesting behind-the-scenes info. Can't wait to see that little twist on Back To You. I would guess that big time finales are really monitored. For example, The Sopranos famous, fade to black finale. I've read that cast and crew have to sign confidentiality agreements, and I'm wondering if the critics have to as well.
