I love the relationship between Roseanne and DJ in season one. She seemed like a real mom and showed a sensitive side. He was a little boy with two big sisters and all the issues that went along with that. Roseanne really understood how to relate to a boy that age.
Check out the opening credits where he gets pushed away by Darlene and he runs to Roseanne for comfort. She hugs him and it seems so real. Very touching.

I love that moment in the opening credits myself. I hate the Darlene pushes him away like that, however, it is for television and it is only acting, but it just seems so real. That is why I love Roseanne, for the realism it brought forth to television sitcoms.
Not only that, but notice how much the actor resembles Roseanne? It is remarkable that a child actor looks so much like his tv parent. Usually you get two-darked haired parents who give birth to a blonde child (ala Full House). Roseanne and DJ's resemblance is uncanny.

I know! I was going to mention that, but I thought I was already blabbering too much! It is one of the best casting jobs ever. In fact, the pilot had some other kid, but he didn't quite fit.

Yep! They were real. That's why I love how Roseanne took DJ under her wing. It was totally real that Darlene shoved him away.
I have two younger brothers and that's what they got from me!

It seemed like DJ was the only one of the children that could actually be her real son.

Just another one chiming in here to say I completely agree about the casting choice re DJ. He really looked like he could be her child. He was such a cute little in that first season.
Another Roseanne/DJ moment that I really like (and please, help me out here, fill in the details for me) is when he's a teenager, and she says to him (paraphrased) "You know you look at your little boy when he's eating crayons and you wonder what kind of person is he going to grow up to be..." and then she just basically told him how proud she was of him. That was a really touching moment. I could swear he was living in the basement at this time.
Anyone care to help me out with this episode?

Yeah, I remember that one. They were in the basement room and Roseanne and DJ had an intimate moment.
What episode was that?

Actually that was the finale, part 1 of it to be exact.
I think they had a pretty cool relationship throughout the entire series, but especially in the first 2 or 3 seasons.

I can't recall what episode but there is a scene where Dan mentions to Roseanne how much D.J. looks like her. Tell me this really did happen, I swear I heard that, but I can't recall what episode.

I know what scene you are talking about, I just can't remember what episode it is, or what season it is from.
Basically, I think Roseanne and Dan are talking about who would get the children if they divorced, and Roseanne says she would deny the children are hers, and Dan says something to the effect of, "That might work for Becky and Darlene, but, not D.J. He looks exactly like you."
So, if you are going crazy, and imagining that, so am I!

Yeah, and he says something like, "None of them look like me."

That was the first episode in Season 3, "The Test"
At the end, when DJ pours the cereal all over the table, Dan says "Kid's got your face, Roseanne. None of them look like me."
And she says "That won't hold up in court." :) Maybe not verbatim, but that is close. Man I watch this show too much.

They were pretty close throughout the series. I think it was in "Homeward Bound" when Roseanne was almost in tears because she was coming to the realization that DJ was growing up. It was a funny scene, but we can all see where Roseanne was coming from/why she was upset.
Another GREAT moment was in the episode when she hit him. The scene when those 2 are talking at the end was one hell of a heartfelt moment.
