Episode #53
TV: Not in syndication.
VHS & DVD: Hasn't been released yet but MPI is "planning" on maybe releasing this episode in the future.

Since I have seen the Color version of this episode and not the B&W version, I assume that these two are on and the same except for some things (like the musical numbers). "A synopsis is known for this episode because it was later remade in color in the 1960's. McCrohan & Crescenti's book states that half of this show is available and that MPI may release it. Once again, this book was published in 1986 so it's possible that the rest of this show has surfaced since then." (Credit goes to www.angelfire.com/ny5/honeymooners/Stillost.html.)

The Kramdens & Nortons are at a fair in Coney Island, New York. They go through the House of Horrors. Alice doesn't want to because it reminds her of the apartment. Ralph claims that he isn't scared. They all go in. While all of this is going on, an "evil" woman fortune teller (whom the audience claps) and her accomplice scheme up a way to fool people into thelling people fake fortunes. They look for a dumb sucker. The girls come out. Trixie wasn't scared. Every year, she attends Norton's family reunion. Ralph was scared. According to Ed, when a skeleton came out, Ralph jumped through a wall. the fortune teller's accomplice comes out and talks about Madam Zelda, the fortune teller. Ralph says that all fortune tellers tell fake fortunes. Alice gets her palm read. Ralph then gets his palm read. Madam Zelda says that Ralph's future is so bad that she won't unveil it to Ralph. Ralph is nervous.

That night, Ralph has kept Alice awake. Ralph is so nervous that he won't be able to sleep. Alice tries to remind Ralph of what he said about fortune teller's giving "fake" fortunes. Ralph: "When they don't tell you anything, that means something." Alice says that Zelda said that Alice was going to get a fortune. Ralph: "Ah ha! My insurance money!" Ralph is still nervous. Ralph now says that she isn't a phony and he will die soon. Ralph talks to Alice about if something happened to him, would she get married again. Alice says she might if she got lonely. Ralph is still upset. Ralph says that Alice' future husband will remind her of him and come back to the apartment to live. Ha! Ralph orders Alice that when he dies to bury him in his new overcoat. Alice goes to bed. Alice: "Goodbye! I mean goodnight." Ed comes down. Ed couldn't sleep not because of what happened to Ralph but because that he ate too many hot dogs. Ralph says that Zelda meant that Ralph will die soon. Ralph then says that if he doesn't die, he would have to put up with Ed for another 40 years. Ed then read Ralph's palm. He says that the lines (veins) in his hand are his success line, heart line and his clothesline. He joked about the last one much to Ralph's chagrin. He then says that it his lifeline. He closes Ralph's hand. He also reads knuckles. The news doesn't look grim for Ralph. I think after this, he kicks Ed out but I am not sure since I never seen the B&W version of this episode.

The next day, Ed comes to Ralph's apartment. Ralph comes out. Ralph says that he is inviting Madam Zelda to come over and tell him what his fortune is. She comes by and Ralph pays her to tell him his fortune. She says that he will not die. Ralph is relieved. She then says that he will commit a murder within a week. Ralph is now upset. Ralph: "I couldn't harm a mosquito." Ed: "You have quite a temper." Ralph (yells): "I HAVE NOT!" Ralph asks her who he will murder and agrees to pay her $10 more. She looks into her crystal ball. Madam Zelda: "In my crystall ball, it's cloudy. Cloudy." Ed: "Ralph, who do you know with the name Cloudy?" Zelda: "The image will not come through." Zelda asks Ralph to be careful. She leaves. Ralph: "I'm a murderer." Ed: "Look at the bright side. If you do commit a murder, the worst thing you will get is life in prison." Apparently Ed doesn't know that the worst thing that will happen is that God might nott forgive you and you will go to Hell when you die. Ed says to Ralph to think of pleasant thoughts like Longfellow saying that it's a pleasure to dip your feet in the Mississippi mud. Ralph kicks Ed out. Alice comes home. She asks for a neck rub. Ralph's hands act all crazy. He actually ends up choking her. He stops. Trixie comes down and asks them to go to the movies and see "Jack The Ripper in 'How To Murder Your Wife.'" Ralph kicks Trixie out. Alice then asks Ralph to cut bread and just like in "The Bensonhurst Bomber", his hands are to shaky to do it. Ralph then tells Alice to mover in with mother for a week. Alice: "Why are you trying to get rid of me." Ralph: "I'm not. That is why I am." Alice then asks if she can bring her over here. Ralph: "DON'T do THAT Alice! DON'T do THAT Alice!" Ralph threatens to throw her out. Alice goes into the bedroom. Ed comes down and offers to go to Norton's apartment for a week. He will send Trixie to her sister's.

In Ed's apartment bedroom, Ralph then asks why that Ed can take showers in his tub and he can't in his apartment. Didn't he say that he could take showers in his apartment in "Goodbye Aunt Ethel"? Ed says that the reason is because the builders put all the showers in the penthosue apartments. They get ready to go to sleep. Ed brushes his eeth but he talks at the same time which causes toothpaste to fall out of his mouth. Ralph wonders what would happen if he start to sleepwalk. Ralph then asks Ed to put rope around each other's wrists to prevent Ralph from sleepwalking. He should of thought of that in "Pal O' Mine." They put the rope on. They go to sleep but with the rope is causing trouble. I thought it would be even funnier if they did some sort of reenactment of "Unconventional Behavior" when they had handcuffs on. Ralph then says that one should be awake while the other one sleeps. Ralph goes to sleep first. Ed makes a lot of hacking noise. Ed: "I think I swalloweed my toothbrush." If he did, he would be dead. Ed accidentaly falls asleep and snores. Ed puts on the radio but he puts it on too loud. Ralph gets up and he is mad. Ed then says he will get earphones and put them in his ears and listen to the radio while Ralph goes to sleep. This works until the station signs off and they play "The Star-Spangled Banner." Ed gets Ralph up so they could salute. Ralph is even more upset.

At the Coney Island carnival, Madam Zelda and her accomplice have set up their place. Alice & the Nortons come by with policemen and tell them what Madam Zelda. Alice reveales that Ed said that Madam Zelda said that Ralph was going to commit a murder within a week and because of that, she was a phony. he policemen arrest Madam Zelda and her accomplice. Ed: "Apox on you and your whole tribe." Trixie: "Ralph is locked in our bedroom and is afraid to face us." The crooks and the policeman take off. Ed: "Ralph is just as sane as I am." Trixie: "Saner." Alice will call Ralph. The Nortons & Alice leave the scene. Ralph looks for Madam Zelda. Ralph finds a policeman and asks him to arrest him. He says that he will commit a murder within a week. The cop doesn't believe him. Cop: "You haven't broken the law." Ralph rips part of the policemen's uniform and takes his cap and stomps on it. Now Ralph will go to jail fo rten days. Ralph: "I am the beast of Bensonhurst." Ralph & the cop run into the Nortons and Ed. Ralph gets told of the whole story about Madam Zelda. Ralph is all happy but he forgets his 10 day jail term. The cop takes him to jail much to Ralph's friends' chagrin.

Episode #54
TV: Half-hour (edited.)
VHS: Attached to "Expectant Father."
DVD: Attached to "Expectant Father" & "The Honeymooners' Greatest
Battles."

Ralph and Ed go to a pool room and greet a person named: "Happy." They immediately start their pool game in typical Ralph and Ed fashion. When Ralph tries to make his shot in, Ed puts powder on his hands and claps his hands, making the powder spread. When Ralph makes his shot, Ed sneezes causing Ralph to make a mistake. Ralph's revenge? He goes near Ed and hits his foot with the pool cue. Ed: "Ow!" Ed retaliates by doing the same thing to Ralph." Ralph (yells): "ARRRRGH!"

Dynamite Moran from Altoona walks in. He has come to New York to make
it big. He needs a manager. He also has clippings of his two fights that he had. The first fight he had, he knocked the guy out in 12 seconds. Ralph says that must have been a record. If it was in real life, then Mike Tyson broke that record in 1988 by KOing his opponent in 2 seconds. Ed says that he knocked himself out before a boxing match once by falling off the scale. Ralph: "How could you tell?" Dyanmite says that the manager that gets him is getting the next champ. Dynamie starts punching in the air. Dynamite then instructs Ralph on how he should fight. Dynamite throws a few punches in the air towards Ralph. Ed (jokingly): "Murder him Dynamite!" Ralph (yells): "SHUT UP!" A person accross the room is having trouble getting a pack of cigarettes from the vending machine, so Dynamite helps him by punching the machine which helps him get the pack of cigarettes out. Dynamite says he has to use the phone and call the "Y" to find a place to stay.

Ralph then gets his crazy idea of becoming Dynamite's manager. When Dynamite comes back in, he still needs a place to stay. Ralph then says that he will become his manger and Norton will train him and live with him. Gee, isn't that nice of Ralph to volunteer Ed's services without asking him? Of course not. But to be fair, Ralph changes his mind and says that Dynamite will live with in the Kramden's place. He also says that he will help give Dyanmite fights because he knows Jack Philbin, a fight promoter and member of the Raccoon Lodge (and in real life the executive producer of the Jackie Gleason Show and The Honeymooners.) Alice will like the fact that another person is coming to live with them, will she?

Alice is shown in the apartment with cans fo food. She says that with prices the way they are, she doesn't know how a family of four manages. Given how prices have skyrocketed since then, the prices abck then seem pretty good. Ralph comes home with a box of sweets because he knows that Alice will not like the idea of him managing a boxer and living with them. Alice naturally doesn't. She feels like KOing Ralph when she hears the news. Ralph says that all throughout life he wanted to be something in the sports world. He wanted to baseball, but he was to slow. He wanted to play basketball, but he was too short. He wanted to be a jockey, but he was a little too heavy. Alice: "You're too fat to be a horse." Ha! Ralph and Alice do more arguing until Alice goes into the bedroom and Dynamite comes in. Ralph: "Alice Dynamite is here." Alice thorws a piece of newspaper in Rlph's direction. Ralph: "I guess that she must be asleep."

The next day, Ralph and Ed show up at Jack Philbin's office. Ralph mentions that he manages Dynamite Moran to a woman. Woman: "Is he the only one in your stable?" Ralph: "Stable?" Ed: "Hey Ralph, she must have seen your apartment." Ralph complains that he has spent $40 on boxing equipment alone and that he never saw anybody eat like this Moran. Hey by looking at Ralph, doesn't he look like he eats more than Dynamite? Ralph says that the food shortage is getting to be so bad, that her and Dynamite had to share a piece of steak. Ed: "You don't want Dynamite to get sore at you?" Ralph: "I rather take my chances with Dynamite rather than Alice." That's real nice. Ralph mentions that they don't want to look anxious, so what does Ed do when he thinks that Jack walked in? He says: "You got to give our boy a fight, he's eating us out of house and home." That person wasn't Jack. Ralph is mad at Ed for almost blowing what he told him. Jack Philbin (played by George Petrie) comes in and Ed's says: "If you think that were anxious about our boy getting a fight, then you are crazy." Ralph says he wants to get fight for his man Dynamite to get a fight. Jack doesn't want to at first, giving the person's lack of good experience. A guy by the name of Armstrong comes in and hears that Moran can punch, Jack tries to get a fight for him. Armstrong then talks with Ralph and Ed about Dynamite. Ralph says that Dynamite eats noting but steaks. Armstrong: "They don't eat peanut butter sandwiches." Armstrong wants to see Moran train. Armstrong: "What gym does he work out at?" Ralph: "He works out at my place. I don't want anybody to see him and steal him away from me." Ed: "Besides that, we can't afford the gym." Gee, a manager and a trainer can't afford a gym for their boxer. That's saying a lot or them, isn't it? Armstrong then tries to make a deal with Ralpha nd offer him Dynamite's contract for a lot of money. Jack gets a fight for Moran which causes Ralph to say no to Mr. Armstrong. But says that he can watch Dynamite train in his apartment at 5am which is the time just before Ralph has to go to work. Ralph then gives Mr. armstrong his address and leaves with Ed.

The next morning at 5am, Dyanmite wakes up immediately at 5:30 and
immediately starts doing exercises. Can you imagine being that energetic at 5:30am? I can't. Ralph wakes up and immediately after that, wakes up Alice. Ralph (yells): "ALICE, GET UP. IT'S LATE. IT'S AFTER 5:30AM." Somehow, that sentence does not seem right. Alice wakes up and starts doing breakfast while Dynamite works on the punching bag. A person by the name of Taylor comes in and complains about the punching bag noise. He can in at around 5 seconds after Dynamite started so he must live VERY close to the Kramden apartment. Dynamite stops for a while. Ed comes in to train Dynamite. Ed (to Alice): "Want to go a couple of rounds with me?" Alice: "I'm ready to go a couple of rounds with all three of you." Ed shows Dynamite some of his boxing techniques that he used when he was a boxer. The technique? He crouches so when he wouldn't have had far to fall. He also swings back and forth because he was on a ship and the ship naturally wne tback and forth if you know what I mean. Dynamite works on the bag a little more causing Taylor to come in again and complain about the noise. Ralph orders Taylor to get out of the apartment saying that this is his place and he can do what he pleases. Gee, that's very nice of Ralph, isn't it? Of course not. Ralph, Ed and Dynamite throw the medicine ball around. Everytime Ed throws it to Ralph, he throws it hard to him. Ed: "You want to play games, huh?" Ed throws the ball in Ralph's direction and the ball goes through the window and outside. Mr. Armstrong comes in and offers his deal to Ralph. Ralph says no. Alice gets mad at Ralph for turning down the money. She says to Ralph to give him the money or she will give him (Ralph) such a going over that Mr. Armstrong will want to buy her contract. Ha! As Ralph and Alice argues, the set comes apart and you can see the stage crew trying to connect it again. Dyanmite goes out to retrieve the ball and when he comes back in to work on the bag again, Taylor comes in and once again complains about the noise. Ralph says for Taylor to beat it. Moran: "Do what he says, beat it little man." Yeah, Dynamite is not being a bully here. Taylor then "punches" Dynamite knocking him out. Mr. Armstrong: "Glass jaw." That's the end of Ralph's boxing career. It looks like that he should have taken the deal. Everyone leaves the room. Ralph apologizes to ALice and Alice forgives him.

They show the Norton's bedroom in the color version? I had no idea about this. I guess "The Sleepwalker" wasn't the only episode it was used in then. Does it look the same as it does in "The Sleepwalker"? I hope their bedroom was used in the original version of "The Fortune Teller" as well, I'd love to see what it looked like before the Classic 39.

Norton's bedroom was VERY different compared to the Classic 39.

Here is what Norton's bedroom looks like. (I hope this works.)

If it does, I tried my best to submit an image of what Ed's bedroom looks like. This was the best I could do.

The image is in the file. Once again, this was the best I could do.

The image isn't working for me. If you get the scene up on your computer, you can hit the "Print Screen" button on your keyboard and paste it into Paint. From there you should be able to save it and up the image here. If not, hopefully someone else can do it.

Sorry about that. I tried your method and I am having no luck. Sorry.

Ed's apartment has red wallpaper with a mirror on the right. The bathroom is on the left whereas in the C39, a window was on the left. In this episode, the bedroom has no window. In the C39, the bathroom was on the top right not on the left.

I'm not sure what you mean about the bathroom being on the top right in the C39. The bathroom was to the left of the beds, with the large window on the far left. If anybody else could up some stills of the Norton's bedroom from the remake of "The Fortune Teller," it would be greatly appreciated. If not, I guess I'll have to get my hands on the episode. I'm very interested to see what the bedroom looked like in the original version as well, there definitely had to be some differences. Thanks for bringing this to my attention Frank, I actually remember a rumor from a while back, before we knew much about the color shows, that "The Sleepwalker" was remade in color, which is obviously untrue, but I guess this is where that rumor originated from.

My mistake about the bathroom. Sorry. It's been a while since I have seen "The Sleepwalker." That was a funny episode.

I.I.N.M., the color remakes of these episodes were titled "Sees All, Knows All" and "The Main Event," respectively.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure those are the correct titles.

Yeah, one of my personal favorites. So is there any additional info you can give me on the appearance of the Norton's bedroom in this episode compared to how it looked in "The Sleepwalker"? Was there one bed, or two pushed together? The reason I ask is because I know it was a rule in the 50's that a married couple could not be seen sleeping in the same bed, but the remake was done in the 60's. Any other details would be great. Thanks again.

There were two separate beds but they were not pushed together.

Interesting, thanks. I guess I'll have to hunt this episode down and check it out for myself.
